Wreath

27MATERIALSfelt

Wreath3

I have a feeling these materials are going to start crossing themselves off without too much help from me. Autumn and the holidays are made for projects and I am so excited for more craft time this season.

Wreath2

Felt was something that I was waiting for fall to work with because the plan was always to make a wreath. Originally, when I bought my supplies, I assumed it would be a flat wreath with felt "leaves" layered on top of each other. When I started playing with the felt and the foam base I had bought, I realized this wreath would look way better if the "leaves" were three dimensional and more structured.

If you want to make your own, follow the super simple tutorial below.

Supplies needed : felt in a few different saturated autumn colors, a foam wreath base, scissors & straight pins. (I picked up all of this at a Jo-Anns, a big box fabric store.)

Wreathstep1

Freehand cut your felt into leaf shapes.

note : this wreath is going to look better if you buy "good" felt. Look for rich, saturated colors, not just the basic primary colors. My fabric store sells a few different kinds of felt. They have cheap, pre-cut craft felt in the craft section and then big bolts of decent & small bolts awesome felt in the fabric section. Buying buy the yard (or half yard) will probably be less expensive and you'll have richer color choices. I bought a 2.5 yards total of four different colors and have some left over.

Wreathstep2

Use a straight pin to pin your first leaf to the foam base.

Wreathstep3

Fold up the first leaf and pin a second one so both are secure but sort of "push-up" the one next to it.

Wreathstep4

Keep going.

Wreathstep5

And going! This is definitely a project where the more you do, the better it looks. Continue pinning felt all around the foam ring.

Wreathstep6

Be sure to pin it to the outside and inside of the ring as well so the wreath looks full and the foam is no longer visible from any angle.

Wreath4

Hang it up! I used fishing line so the wreath appears to be floating on the mirror above our mantle. Seriously, such a fun & easy project. This would be awesome with different shades of green felt and a big red bow for Christmas too.

This is project 15 of 27. I am attempting to complete 27 craft projects using 27 different materials before I turn 28 on 02.22.13. You can follow my progress here on the blog or on pinterest. Birthday challenges are my favorite. You can see the 26 Projects I completed while 26 here and the 27 materials I have used so far here.

LOve it! Have been thinking of trying your ribbon wreath from awhile back but I think this is more cost efficient 🙂 may try hot glueing the leaves instead

Love the colors! And using the pins means you could always switch out colors. Very appealing.
PS – Is the black & white backdrop a rug? I like it 🙂

Your wreath is simply lovely. Great minds think alike, that is on my to do list for the week, make a fall wreath…I think I am going to try a tie the fabric and glue it into the foam kind. Not sure if that made sense, but now I am wondering if I should try your type of wreath…way too many ideas on Pinterest, I almost wish there was just one fall wreath pinned-that said make this one, if you know what I mean.
    Have a great day!

How wide was the felt you bought? I need to convert the amount of fabric into something Europe-compatible. 🙂 Thanks!

This looks so lovely! Not sure I would have the patience to sit and pin all those leaves, though…do you know how long it took you to do??

I am not quite sure – the felt was sold on different sized bolts, some was small — maybe 40 inches? and some was huge – closer to 70 inches. Wish I could be more help!!

I love this! What a perfect fall project! I used your ribbon wreath tutorial to make holiday presents for two friends last year. I definitely think I’ll try this one too. I could see this being cute with different shapes, too- more winter-shaped leaves for winter, shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day, hearts for a wedding/engagement party/Valentine’s Day, etc. 🙂 (Of course, those would require more time and patience to cut out!)

Love this! I went to the craft store yesterday with the intention of buying materials to make a fall wreath, but left empty handed. I think I was meant to see this post first.

hey! thanks so much. I did not count the leaves! I just cut a bunch, pinned a bunch, cut the next bunch and pinned until it was complete. Wish I could be more specific. 🙂 Have fun with it!

This is awesome!! Couple of questions…..
    1. It looks like you did several layers. 2 or 3?
    2. I don’t see any of the pins on the top. How did you hide them?
    3. Do you remember how much of each color felt you purchased?
    Again….great, great wreath for fall!

It is just one layer. Each piece goes directly into the foam. And the pins are all there! But if you densely pin the felt, you cannot really see them. 🙂 And I purchased about 2.5 yards of felt total.

My wreath is done and I just love it. I ended up with 5 colors since I forgot my list at home. 🙂 Thanks again for sharing your amazing project. I can’t wait to get my second wreath done so that it’s ready to go for Christmas.

Hah! Just followed the link from your weekend links to this. Random Fact: I was working on this very project last year 10th October 2013 when my waters broke.
I have since completed the project – one of the few completed projects since Charlotte’s early, but healthy and safe arrival.
