Creative, Inc., Domino: The Book of Decorating
    & No Impact Man

It's been a good summer for reading. I raced through the Stieg Larsson books & Little Bee. I went back and reread most of the Harry Potters & Breaking Dawn (by far my favorite of the Twilight series). And then when I ran out of books to read and re-read, I started going through back issues of Domino. I'm so glad I decided they needed to make the cross country move from Maryland to California.

And that got me excited about purchasing the Domino book. And I loved Craft, Inc. so I'm super excited about Creative, Inc. And yesterday I saw this post on Lovely Morning and decided to check out No Impact Man.

So it looks like as soon as my Amazon delivery arrives I'll be all about non-fiction for awhile. Which is totally rad as they all look inspiring.

What about you? Read any good books recently?

Since probably the first day we drove around looking for apartments, I have been wanting to take a picture with this green wall with white dandelions. Something about it screams "Walk over and awkwardly balance your camera on an uneven curb." Last night, after happy hour to celebrate Paul's end of rotation and my workshop launch (thank you, thank you, btw), I convinced Paul we needed to take a few photos with the wall.

And by a few, I mean a lot. And by a lot I mean, next time I am bringing a tripod.

If summer is my favorite season, fall is a close second. However, it seems that summer just hit Southern California, so it might be January by the time we see crisp, cool weather. But regardless, I’ve got fall kits listed and ready to roll.

and PS balloon journals and mixed paper books.

I got our Bora Bora memory up on the wall.

I bought a square frame (with an 11.5×11.5 mat opening) at Ikea yesterday and decided instead of being patient and waiting for a large print, I would just piece together the photograph myself. I scanned the Polaroid in at a high resolution, divided it up into four 7×7 squares and one 7×7 square for the center and printed it at home on white cardstock. Then I played around with it until the collage effect looked like photo but just a bit off.

And then, as I was putting it all together (and remarking to Paul on the greatness of my Ikea frame and what a deal it was), I broke the glass.

So for now, we have a Bora Bora photo. In a very pretty frame. And eventually it is going to get all dusty and need to be redone. And then I'll just order a big 12×12 print. Or maybe by then I'll go larger.

  • …for the rest of the year.

    1. run outside.

    2. host a successful minibook workshop (full details coming Monday).

    3. light up our apartment. We can't make it through fall with the lighting we have.

    4. make some stuff just for fun. No profit necessary.

    thanks, elsie, for the challenge!

I'm pretty sure my claim over the domain eliseandpaul.com is going to be up in the next few days and I never shared our wedding website here on the blog. So if you're curious :

    here it is.

(Thank you, USC, for offering Introduction to HTML as a 2 credit class.)

At the farmer's market on Saturday, Paul picked up a pound of basil leaves which means we'll be eating pesto until we turn green. Monday night, we used some on a pizza instead of tomato sauce. Here's our go-to pizza dough recipe and our new favorite toppings.

    For the dough :

    • 3/4 cup warm water (around 110*F – Paul says it should feel like a hot tub)
    • 1 tsp white sugar
    • 1 packet of yeast
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • about 2-2.5 cups flour (we start with a mix about 1 C wheat flour and 1 C white flour)
    • 1 tbsp olive oil

Mix water, sugar and yeast in a mixing bowl. Let sit for a few minutes until yeast bubbles and mixture becomes fragrant.

Add salt, flour and olive oil. Knead by hand or on the low setting in a mixer fitted with the dough hook.

Bread should be mixed very well. Add water or flour in small bits until dough is not too sticky and not too dry. I ended up adding about 1/5 – 3/4 C of extra white flour.

Leave the dough in the bowl and let it sit in a dry place for about 4 hours. (We stick ours in our turned off oven.)

When you are ready to bake, prep your ingredients and preheat the oven to 425*. Our new pizza prep involves a pre-heated pizza stone and pizza peel, but for years we built and baked on a cookie sheet.

Roll out your dough with a rolling pin and extra white flour. To help keep the pizza from sticking, spread out some corn flour on the pizza peel/cookie sheet.

Pinch up the corners and top with your ingredients.

    Our new favorites :

    • pesto (here's our recipe)
    • shredded cheddar cheese
    • feta cheese
    • black olives
    • sundried tomatoes
    • grilled onions
    • grilled chicken

Cook for about 25 minutes until cheese melts and crust browns.

Remove and let sit for a few minutes before cutting and enjoying.

    Bedroom

It’s very likely that we’ll be moving again next June (military + medicine = a lot of moves) so I should probably get started on decorating our bedroom. Otherwise, I might as well begin focusing on our next place.

The dresser with fancy knobs we have. The side table we have. The love sign we have. We have a framed wedding photo and a canvas with an engagement photo already on the walls. And our curtains our teal + white.

I have a Bora Bora polaroid that I want to have blown up huge (like 20×20 or bigger) and framed to hang over the dresser. Has anyone ever blown up a polaroid photo? Any tips? I know it would get pretty grainy, but that is sort of what I am going for.

I really want a white and gray striped duvet cover but I haven’t found anything quite right (this is fantastic, but out of our price range). But I’m hoping to sew something together this month.

And I think we need that hanging lamp (or maybe this one). Right now, it’s pretty dark in there.

    Time to get moving, elise.

links : lamp, love sign, side table, flower knob, dresser, bedding is an old image from Ikea that I recolored a haphazardly.
