Paul and I spent last weekend on a little downtown San Diego stay-cation. Originally when we talked about taking a weekend we had big plans. Seattle! Palm Springs! Somewhere far! And then we decided to just keep it simple and stay near home. We ended up at the Andaz in the Gaslamp and because we NEVER go to the Gaslamp, it felt like we were in a completely different location…that we could Uber to. Staycation win for sure.

As Elise and Paul vacations tend to go, this was pretty chill. Good coffee, good dinners, lots of walking (the Fitbit never sleeps), crossword puzzles and so. much. football. We didn't get to catch either of our college games, but we watched a lot anyway and saw a few good ones.

We also seriously missed our girl (who was home with Grandma and Aunt Kristen) and spent most of the time away talking about her and this new little one who's going to arrive in the next few weeks. We're at that place. That really great place where things are clicking for our family and we've got the routine DOWN. It feels insane to throw a newborn into the mix, but it also feels like exactly the right thing to do. This is our last baby. She's the final piece of our family puzzle and we are so excited to meet her (and equally excited to savor these last few weeks as three as well).

I've said this before and I'll say it again, but when given a choice, always choose to have a baby when your partner is NOT deployed to a foreign country. 😉 It's amazing how different (and better) it is to have Paul home for this experience.

Wishing you a few more relaxing weekends! Have you ever thought about getting Paul’s perspective on this pregnancy? It would be interesting to see his view on this whole new experience for him!

I’m so glad you included this! I know you don’t talk a lot about marriage here (and I appreciate that you know where your boundaries are), but a happy marriage makes all the difference. I’m glad y’all are happy and excited about this next stage in your family life!

i’m so happy that you and paul can both enjoy this pregnancy together. and it’s always important to get a little one-on-one time without the littles around too. elise, i pray that the transition from 1 child to a newborn goes smoothly. i know there will be some adjusting but i pray that it’s an easy one. you are a strong and brave (oh… and don’t forget beautiful) lady who is so fortunate to have a supportive husband and family around who’s there for help and support.
wishing you a blessed and wonderful rest of the week.

This looks like a lovely weekend – glad you got some time together before the new baby comes! While you were staycationing, my boyfriend and I were traveling down the California coast (Napa to San Francisco to Monterey through Big Sur to Newport Beach, where my sister lives). We used some of the suggestions in your California road trip guide from a few years ago and they were super helpful! So a belated thanks for writing that up. 🙂

My second kid is 2 weeks old today. It’s been sort of amazing how much easier it feels this time around — like to the point where I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. It hasn’t yet, and I’m crossing my fingers that maybe we just got lucky with a super good baby!
Anyway, no matter what I think you will find it easier this time, and that’s not even including the Paul-being-here factor. I am so much more confident in my ability to take care of this baby and take care of myself in the ways that are right for me instead of the ways that are “right.” I suspect you will have a similar experience!

2nd babies have more experienced parents who know they can handle this kind of thing, no matter what. Glad you had the quiet couple time I suspect you both knew you needed. There’s plenty of excitement time ahead with little sister’s arrival!

I love a good staycation – my girlfriend came up a few months ago and we had a great cocktail’n’art weekend in my hometown of Edmonton, Alberta. So fun to stay in a nice hotel and eat great food. I traveled to San Diego a few years back and we stayed in the gaslamp district too – it was pumping. Great for a girls weekend. Have fun with Paul in the next few weeks!

My husband and I are heading to San Diego this week for vacation! (We’re from NY), I just added Searsucker to the list of places to try because it’s right near our hotel. Can’t wait to see everything San Diego has to offer. Especially food!
