Skincarefaves

Over the years I have shared many a post about "green skincare." (The most recent was March 2014.) I've spent the last four years intentionally and unintentionally narrowing down the amount of product I use on my skin. Originally this came from realizing some of the harmful chemicals we slather on ourselves. Then it came from being really busy and having little time to actually slather myself. And more recently, it came from going through my bathroom drawers and realizing it was time to throw out all the product I don't use. (Thank you #konmarimethod.)

And so, I present my "final" post about this crap because I feel like I'm down to so few products and I have used so many of these things for so long that I can't imagine the routine will get more simple.

In that top photo, you are looking at the extent of my skincare and makeup products. Aside from a few chapsticks in various corners of the house this is everything I own. (I added in Ellerie's sunscreen because we love it.)

Some of this stuff – like the Pangea Organics – I have used for the past four years. (It still works great, my skin never rebelled and asked for a change.) Some of it, like the Rocky Mountain Soap deodorant is new this year. All of it is stuff I would recommend, but recommending skincare products is really hard because we all have such different skin and varied needs.

Some of this stuff I pick up at Target, some via Amazon and some I have to order directly from the brand. Links are to Amazon or brand where appropriate and some links here are affiliate.

SUN SAFE : ah, sunscreen. My love language (and where I spend my money). The body stuff I use from Josie Maran I think has been discontinued. 😦 But I like this or this for face. The body is a bit more white than I'd like but the face products because though they are mineral sunscreens they both rub in well and feel great on my skin.

MAKE UP : this is where I guess I am the most minimalist. It's not that I don't like makeup, but it's never been something I'm good at or willing to spend time learning. Going to Sephora gives me much more anxiety than excitement. And because I don't wear much, when I actually DO take the time, I always feel odd looking at the face in the mirror (like "who is that and why does she think she can pull off that lipstick?") But that Tarte stuff is legit. And I love this mascara (which I started buying in the mini size because I never get through it before it expires). I've started using this (sold at Target) to "enhance" my eyebrows. When I wear lipstick it's either this (in apparently a discontinued color), this (in bali but I think they changed the name to jamaica?) or this (in courage). And if I have something really fancy (which would be like a wedding) I'll wear this under eye stuff, a bit of this in regal ruby on my cheeks and this on my eyelids.

CLEAN UP : at night I use the Avalon Organics (milk not gel – the gel dries out my skin) facewash and then the Pangea Organics toner followed by their face lotion. I have stuck with these scents for four years and will never change. When I'm traveling I use the Yes to Cucumbers wipes and Pangea Organics face lotion because they are easy to travel with.

HAIR : I stopped brushing or combing my hair after hopping out of the shower and it's done wonders for my curls. I lightly towel try my hair and then rub this stuff through, first as a de-tangler (just using my fingers) and then I "scrunch" my curls. That's it. Too easy. On the rare occasion that I straighten my hair (every six weeks?) I use the same stuff. I'll use this Redkin stuff if I need to give my hair some extra volume (smells odd but works). I'm back on the Unite shampoo and conditioner train after trying and failing with the Trader Joe's brand.

BODY : we use a variety of chemical free body soaps in the shower. I just pick something up when I'm at Target or Trader Joe's. I love this roll on lotion and this roll-on deodorant. The lotion I would recommend for everyone. The non-chemical deodorant may not be a great fit for everybody. So many factors go into the right deodorant (hormones, activity level, climate) but if you already like natural deodorants and find your body responds to them, then I'd recommend. This hand lotion is the best and I rarely wear polish on my fingernails these days but I have a few (toxic) options on hand.

Here's the list of chemicals to avoid that I always include with posts like this (click to enlarge). It's from the book There's Lead in Your Lipstick. Most (but not all) of what I shared here is compliant with these guidelines, but of course check your labels.

Any product favorites you want to share? The comments sections of posts like these always have more suggestions than I offer. 🙂

The older I get (I’m 31 now) the more I realize this is just who I am. I’m not a makeup-gal. That’s great if that’s a gal’s “thing”. But it’s just not mine.

Another no make-up gal here. I was SO sick every day with my first pregnancy, but still had to work full-time…that was the easiest thing to ditch from my routine and I never looked back! I’ve been working my way through the Honest Company’s products. I really like their sunscreen, though it takes a bit to rub it in. The bug spray is okay. I’m too chicken to try their deodorant (it is liquid in a pump bottle which just seems weird to me). I like their new face wipes and am interested to see the new line of products coming out in the fall! Like their shampoo and conditioner (and since using it on my kids, I no longer need to use a detangler on my 4-year-old!), but not impressed with their lotion. Thanks for this post!

I just shared by roundup of favorite eco friendly body products: http://www.lisavalinsky.com/2015/07/eco-friendly-beauty-products-that-i-love.html
I maybe wear makeup once a year, like if I have a wedding or job interview to attend. But that’s it. I don’t like the feeling of gunk on my face, plus it takes so much time to purchase and apply product.

Another “me too” on the makeup front. I like wearing a bit of makeup, but I don’t like experimenting or buying a ton of product or developing a complicated routine. So I am still trying to refine a good basic makeup routine – right now it’s just tinted moisturizer, eyeliner, and mascara. I’m always on the lookout for good lip stuff – for some reason I always end up thinking that lipstick looks funny on me. Thanks for the recommendations!

    Ditto on the makeup!!
And deodorant is a hard one. After a lot of trial and even more error, I discovered Soapwalla deodorant via Follain (http://shopfollain.com/), then switched to Meow Meow Tweet baking soda free deodorant cream also at Follain and haven’t looked back (my husband uses the Soapwalla one now). Bonus, no more gross antiperspirant buildup in our clothes.
I’ve tweaked a few other things since I blogged about the products I use (http://annakristina28.blogspot.com/2014/04/living-green-search-for-greener.html), but the next category to solve for me is shampoo/conditioner. My hair is SO LONG so I go through products faster (making cost a big issue) and I have dry scalp + dandruff issues. I have to remind myself I did eventually find an amazing deodorant, and a face routine that has made worlds of difference without a scary prescription, so it’s only a matter of time before I figure out hair care. 🙂

Yes! I’m a minimal makeup girl here, I use a mineral foundation (if I’m going out), blush, mascara, and lip balm. I love Shea Moisture shampoos and conditioners, and they have a Raw Shea Chamomile Argan Oil baby ointment that I use to keep my eczema in check. We fell in love with Absolutely Natural Sunscreen after a trip to Hawaii 15 yrs ago and have been using it ever since. The Pure Aloe Recovery Gel along with the Rose Hip & Aloe lotion will heal a sunburn in a day! Plus the Rose Hip & Aloe lotion smells divine! I switched to EOS Shave Cream and will never look back.

I love the skincare products from SW Basics (http://swbasicsofbk.com/). The cream can be a little rich for me in summer humidity, but it’s a godsend in the winter. And the owner (who, full disclosure, is an acquaintance) wrote a book recently that I think even includes recipes for some of her products. http://www.amazon.com/Skin-Cleanse-Simple-All-Natural-Program/dp/0062332554/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8
Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention my own soap company, Schoon Soap (schoonsoap.com). The soaps are made without animal products, palm oil, or synthetic fragrances, and I have three different unscented varieties for people who prefer no added fragrance at all.

Sounds like you found a deodorant that works for you but I cannot sing praise enough of Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant. I tried so many varieties of natural deodorant and never found that they worked. Schmidt’s not only works but works better than conventional deodorants for me. If I skip a day I honestly have no smell, and I live in Phoenix and am not afraid to sweat. So if you ever want to try something different cannot recommend that brand enough.
Love these round ups! I try to use all cruelty-free + natural products and I love getting recommendations.

This is a timely post for me, as I’ve recently started making the switch to products with more quality ingredients. I have been using the EWG Skin Deep database to help me choose and it has been really helpful. If a product isn’t listed there, I can still use it to look up the ingredients.
I’m obsessed with Egyptian Magic cream for my face moisturizer. I have (had?) oily skin but since using this (and alternating with Josie Maran Light Argan Oil depending on how dry my skin feels or if I want to apply makeup right away) my skin drinks it up and I don’t have oil slicks anymore. I think it has to do with balancing out your oil levels so your skin doesn’t produce as much.
I just switched from Maybelline Full & Soft mascara, which I’ve used since they introduced it back in the day, to LOVING Mineral Fusion Volumizing Mascara (found at Whole Foods). I used F&S so long because all other mascaras irritated my eyes. The Mineral Fusion does not irritate my eyes and it looks so good on my lashes. Maybelline tests on animals, which is so unfortunate. Animal testing just so people can look pretty just seems so shallow and wrong.
I’m looking for a tinted moisturizer or CC cream type product with a good amount of SPF, a deodorant, and a body SPF, so I’m eager to check out the links and suggestions. Thanks!

I LOVE the Yes To products! I use all their shampoos/conditioners, soaps, etc. I like that they’re more natural and weird-chemical free, but I mostly switched to them because they’re cruelty free.

Maybe it’s a mom thing? Looking back I can see how I switched gears too. I used to have a ton of cosmetics and nail polishes as well as all the skin care slathery things. Now my collection is probably smaller than yours. I think mom life forces us to simplify as much as we can and really figure out what is worth it to us and what isn’t.

I first started making my own face moisturizer, then deodorant, and now flax seed hair gel for my curly hair (had it long for years but recently cut it and had curls!). The hair gel works fine but not quite as strong a hold as I want to get. My deodorant is the best stuff I have ever used and is super easy to make. And nothing comes close to my super rich moisturizer. Still trying to find a sunscreen that doesn’t break me out.

I live in France and we are very careful about what we put on our face too. I am studying naturopathy and I apply the concepts to myself too and it works really good. I had(have but improved) little rosacea and acne and what really changed my skin was to adopt a routine with no water. So in the morning, just floral water to clean up (tea tree , hammamelis, it depends), sometimes vegetal oil as serum and propolis cream or cream formulated with ass’s milk (I don’t know how you call that in the US, female of donkey, is is really called ass?:p). and at night, organic makeup remover (milk) and floral water. I use also Egyptian magic, or oil based balms I make myself for the night. All products organic and/or from local producers, including myself:) Deodorant as I see talking above, palmarosa essential oil is very good !
this routine really works better that any chemical L’oreal or other sephora brands!

I just recently started using DevaCurl’s volumnizing no-frizz foam for my long (mid-back) curly hair, but still have to use some standard mousse on the ends – I’m trying the Mizani for sure. I really like Trader Joe’s Nourish conditioner and the shampoo for the rare times I use it, but I also use they’re natural deodorant. Hated the Tom’s version! Thanks for these updates, Elise. These past three years, after having my son, I’ve been gradually finding healthier options too.

I love It cosmetics CC cream. It’s SPF 50 and has good coverage. I don’t think they do animal testing. On the “”greener” scale, the yes to line has a grapefruit cc cream. It’s only SPF 18 and the coverage isn’t as good as the It cosmetics, but it’s a great moisturizer.

After using greener products for the past 9 months, my skin has never looked better. It’s softer, clearer, and my once super oily shiny skin is normal looking. Thanks so much for your past recommendations. I’m loving all of the yes to products. I haven’t switched my hair products. I’m so scared it’s not going to be able to tame my frizzy curls. I live in Louisiana and the humidity is killer on my hair.

Thanks Jacee! I was at Ulta yesterday and noticed the It cosmetics line, but didn’t look at it. I wish I would have. I saw the Yes To Grapefruit stuff at Target, but it’s all on super clearance at both of my stores. They didn’t have my color left, and I figured it must be getting discontinued.
I ended up getting Juice Beauty CC Cream at Ulta, which is actually recommended by EWG. I’m not sure I love it enough yet (just wore it for half a day) to keep it, so I’ll check out your recommendation!

BeautyCounter is awesome!! I am really picky about skincare and their stuff is AMAZING!
There is an app called skindeep that allows you to scan or enter in a product and if they have analyzed it – it will tell you how toxic (or safe) it is!
Also love the Honest Co. for a lot of body and cleaning products. They also have a lot of things for babies that are safe and nontoxic.

Thanks so much for sharing this, Elise! I actually picked up the Pixi brow duo at Target after reading this. I’ve used it for a few days now and really like it! I did notice something that I wanted to share in case it mattered to you. The gel portion of the brow duo has methylparaben. 😦 I picked up their mascara too, which is paraben-free. Odd (and disappointing) that the company touts its absence in one product but then use it in another! I plan to continue using it (not a big hazard in the gran scheme), but might shop around when it comes time to replace it. Have a beautiful day!
