Yesterday was day 15 of Whole30. If you are unfamiliar with the program, you can read more here.

The quick gist is, no grains, no beans, no rice, no dairy, no sugar of any kind, no artificial sugar, no alcohol. It’s sort of like Paleo but there are a few differences. There are other guidelines worked into it too like no (or minimal) snacking, no “cheats,” and no weighing yourself for 30 days.

We decided to try it without much research. Basically, I had seen a lot of folks (both real life friends and social media friends) talk about it and I was interested. Last pregnancy, I had gestational diabetes (which usually presents around 28 weeks) and controlled it easily by monitoring what sorts of food I ate (basically a low carb diet). I figured this would just be a bit stricter GD diet AND there was a chance that the clean eating would help prevent GD this time around (I’ll let you know if that turns out to be true).

Overall, I wanted a reason to feel motivated in the kitchen again. I wanted to refocus our meal prep and stop defaulting to the same (less healthy) meals. I’m not trying to lose weight (I’m pregnant) but Paul said he wouldn’t mind dropping a few pounds.

So that’s the introduction.

How are we doing 15 days in?

I’d say like a 7 on a scale of 1-10. Dinners are a 10. We are eating more veggies and finding some really fun recipes. The photos at the top of this post are of some dinners these past few weeks. Clockwise from top right : coconut chicken (we are using almond flour) and broccoli sauteed with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, salad with a homemade olive oil and vinegar dressing with steak, Trader Joe’s turkey burger (no bun) with mustard, tomato, avocado, caramelized onions and mushrooms & sweet potato fries, sweet potato “nachos” similar to this.

Breakfasts are a 5. Taste wise, I’m so over eggs. I want to wake up and eat oatmeal. Energy wise though, eggs just can’t be beat. I am consistently making it until 11:30 before I am hungry again – something I am not sure I have ever said in my life. I’m eating scrambled eggs with avocado and some meat (usually leftover from the night before) and fruit. It’s filling but getting boring.

Lunches are fine. Generally, we just eat leftovers (Paul brings them to work and I eat them here).

In the beginning I was snacking a ton. Mostly on fruit, nut butters and Larabars. Now though (actually just in the past few days) I am finding those snacks less necessary. It appears I am adjusting to the new routine. Increasing my weight gradually is important while pregnant though, so I am monitoring that and making sure to get enough food (and obviously, eating whenever I’m hungry).

I feel great energy wise. No headaches, no hunger, no physical cravings, no afternoon crashes. All good news. I am struggling to drink enough water though (just need to commit to it). I’ve done some reading and while veggies are more fibrous than whole grains, they take a lot more water to process through your system. Good to know. Working on it.

One of the big pros of the program is supposed to be better sleep and a clearer mind. I was getting decent sleep and felt “clear headed” before starting though so I can’t say that’s improved.

Paul says he feels pretty much the same physically, but better mentally about the choices we are making. So there’s that. We also learned Ellerie loves cooked broccoli! So that was a bizarre and unexpected side effect.

In sum: not a lot to report. It’s an intense way of eating, but it’s 30 days. 30 days. You can do anything for 30 days. If you want a jump start, it could be a great fit. Hopefully I’ll have a more exciting update when we complete the program on August 5!

    Elise, I am a week out from finishing my Whole30 and I will say I feel a lot different. I definitely don’t have very many cravings and it is just so much easier to make healthy choices (after eliminating so much it is just easy to let it go). I lost about 13 pounds. I have been really changing my lifestyle for the last year & a half and so far lost about 30 pounds (trying to lose probably 30-35 more). Your food descriptions & pics look wonderful! That’s one thing I didn’t do enough of — cook and experiment with recipes. My hope going forward is that I will do more of that. So glad it’s going well for you!

    I did whole30 last year and it is basically how I continue to eat. It wasn’t that different from how I was eating before, but just enough to push it across the line to tell quite a bit of difference. It’s the most “lifestyle” way of eating I’ve come across that hasn’t ended up feeling like a diet…and I’ve tried quite a bit trying to get sensitivities under wraps. IG is a great place for ideas, which I’m sure you know. I like sharing my own and getting inspiration from others on simple, versatile meals. Check out @wholefork; I like her breakfast ideas especially. I hear ya on eggs. I love them, but can also tire and they can upset me if I have them daily. Have you switched it up w many different ways? Baked eggs, frittatas, etc?? Especially anxious to read how it effects GD.

    That coconut chicken looks great! For breakfast, have you thought about just eating normal food? A lot of Whole30-ers say that breakfasts were easier once they stopped thinking in terms of breakfast foods, lunch foods, etc. This morning I had ginger zucchini soup with some Appelgate sausage and it was a nice change from eggs (and not too weird, ha).

    You might enjoy reading Trim Healthy Mama after you finish Whole 30. Still sugar-free and low carb, but oatmeal is on the “okay” list.

    Thanks for this, Elise.
    I’m a super healthy eater in general but have continued to gain weight and i’m soooo frustrated. I’m a larger person by structure, 5 foot seven and just a solid woman but I need and want to be healthier physically.
    I’ve been cutting out gluten and most dairy as i have a major intolerance to it but not celiacs disease, thankfully.
    As well, i’m trying soooo freaking hard to drink more water. In my attempt at more water, i have made the choice to eliminate ALL other beverages except (unsweetened tea, especially my afternoon iced tea). It may be extreme for some people, but for me, it’s working because when i’m thirsty, water is my only choice.
    I do feel better even after just a week or so especially with the “fog” that i feel way to often. However, after implementing some positive food changes, I actually GAINED 3 pounds!! WHATTTT????????!!!!
    i’m going to keep trying. One day at a time.

    i’m currently on day 10 of my first whole30…and i’m still in snack phase a little – more hungry here and there than i like.
    BUT like you, it’s making me experiment with recipes and food more and more which i love!
    i can’t wait to look at the recipes you referenced.

    All the meals you shared here look great! I would guess the hardest part for you guys would be retiring the pizza stone for a month. And the easiest would be having Paul join in on not drinking during your pregnancy 🙂
    I would love to try a Whole 30 sometime since everyone raves about it so much. I’m not totally vegetarian but I don’t eat much meat, so I think the hardest part for me would be giving up rice and beans.

    Breakfast was the biggest issue for me too, even more because being french and all, salty breakfast are not a thing. it’s more like croissant please 😉

    Wow! It sounds hard to me, between being a vegetarian and being 27 weeks pregnant. But it’s fun to read about, and I didn’t know about the veggies and water intake.
    I keep a huge water bottle by my desk all day (it’s a 64 ounce one), and I make sure to drink at least 1.5 of them a day.

    I definitely remember the Whole30 Egg Rut. I love eggs, but relying on them for Whole30 makes them so monotonous. As for oatmeal, I haven’t tried this, but I’ve heard that it’s wonderful: http://againstallgrain.com/2013/01/04/banana-nut-porridge/

    The breakfasts were the hardest for me too. But they are outside of the whole30 anyway so no real challenge for me in that department.
    What I was really over was sweet potato, especially on my first round. On the second one, I ate white potatoes now and then (I love the Domestic Man tuna stuffed potatoes and could eat them for lunch over and over without getting bored with it).
    Yay you for sticking to it, great job ! (the most difficult, the first time, was the actual grocery shopping because reading even more the labels brought tons of frustration).
    I made the banana nut porridge and my almost 10yo daughter and I really liked it 🙂

    The Paleo recipes in the Well Fed books are excellent, and might help get you out of your egg rut. I also like this coconut flour banana porridge, which contains eggs but doesn’t taste egg-y.

    Thanks for the review Elise. I’d like to try whole 30 but i think it’s going to be hard to drop bread and cheese (french girl talking here !). But i guess for 30 days it can be doable.
    How do you deal with invitation ? If you eat outside and all ?

    I’m just finishing my reintroduction period. I too got super bored of eggs so I started making this paleo faux-oatmeal to mix it up. I added almond butter, unsweetened coconut, fruit, chia and nuts. Sometimes I had some deli meat on the side to make sure I was getting enough protein, but its a great and easy meal that keeps you from getting tired of eggs. http://www.ourpaleolife.com/2013/03/paleo-fauxtmeal/

    I eat a lot of eggs too and was recently bored flavor wise. I started making my own cilantro pesto and throw a little of that in there. Bam. Totally worked, I’m in love.

    I felt the same way about eggs but then I tried mixing salsa into the eggs before they are scrambled and it changed everything for me. It added a ton of flavor and didn’t seem so boring. Also, I would make an egg “over-easy” and put it on a bed of roasted potatoes. I would dice & roast a few potatoes at a time and store them in the fridge and then heat up one serving on a skillet in the morning to crisp them up. Such a time-saver.

    I’m not doing Whole 30 but I have been cutting a LOT of processed sugar out and one of my fave breakfasts is “Monkey Salad” – sliced banana, almond or cashew butter, and toasted unsweetened coconut flakes. I often add blueberries or strawberries, cocoa nibs, pepitas… and then have sausage with it for added protein. It suits my sweet tooth and my crunch tooth, without being a pile of processed sugars. Your Whole 30 dinners are about the prettiest I’ve seen yet!

    On Day 22 over in the Griffin household – almost there! My energy levels are so much higher and my mental clarity in the afternoon has increased a ton. Hang in there! So much easier by day 20 I thought!

    I love the idea of Whole30 and have considered doing it myself and possibly convince my husband! I also have a toddler and I was wondering how you work meals around Ellerie’s eating preferences and Whole30. I would prefer not to have to make totally separate meals. I would love to know how it works for your family. Thanks

    FYI apple works really well here in place of the banana. And I’ve been eating a hard-boiled egg for the protein instead of sausage, since that’s easier at work. = )
