playing with more rope baskets. Yep. So addicting.

planning to work from a coffee shop this morning while I wait for my June roll of film to be developed.

going through all the baby girl clothes in the garage. I am embarrassed to admit how many bins we had in there. It was much more emotional than I thought it would be to sort through all those tiny onesies and outfits. I can't believe in less than four months we will have a tiny baby in our house again.

trying WHOLE30! We officially began yesterday after agreeing it was time for a meal jump start. I am (obviously) NOT trying to lose weight while pregnant but I'd love to have a bit more energy and reduce some of my sugar cravings. Last pregnancy, I had gestational diabetes and we're not sure yet if I do this time (it usually presents between 26 and 28 weeks and I am 23 weeks today). Either way, I figure it can't be a bad idea to get more veggies and protein while cutting sugar and bread carbs. I'm interested to see how I feel in a week or two… if it's not working while pregnant, I'll ease up and will keep you posted for sure.

reading The Book of Unknown Americans.

taking night walks and enjoying them so much. The well-lit evenings are my favorite part of summer, hands down.

spending too much time window-shopping for houses on zillow. I think it's how I'm trying to "nest" without anything to really do on our house. (Toddler room is happening when my parents visit at the end of the month.) We will not be moving for at least 1.5 years but it's interesting (and addicting) to see what's happening in various neighborhoods anyway. And, in case you've ever wondered what a 10 million dollar house in La Jolla looks like, wonder no more.

using my GET TO WORK BOOK! Finally! It's so fun to actually get to use it and even more fun to see how others are using theirs with the hashtag #gettoworkbook. Instagram is a great little community.

looking forward to a trip to Portland this weekend! I'm going back to WDS as an attendee (not a speaker) this time and the relief is absurd. I can't wait to wander Portland and not be having a mild panic attack the whole time.

marveling daily at Ellerie's growth. They pick up so much, so fast at this age. Playing witness is my favorite part x100.

uploading a new podcast! Come hear artist and author Jason Kotecki talk about dealing with stress on Elise Gets Crafty here.

Have fun in PDX! Hopefully you’ll get to experience some of its beauty without being panicked this time!
I grew up just outside of Portland and just came home from 10 days there at the end of June. Word of…advice (?): they’re having a ridiculously hot and humid (for them) summer, and there’s like, NO public outdoor pools. Head to the Waterfront to cool off near the fountain. Or if you venture into the suburbs, look up some of the splash pads!
I’ve been out in DC for the last 10 years, so the heat + humidity PDX is experiencing this summer was nothing to me (I loved it, actually), but being pregnant, you may want to prep, even if just mentally. And I mean, I guess your hotel will probably have a pool, even if it’s indoor. So you know, nvm. Haha!

Elise, I am on Day 24 of my Whole30 (almost done!) and I will say it has really changed my outlook on food. Firstly, I have no willpower whatsoever — you put that cookie in front of me and it’s gone! Like seriously gone! Secondly, cheese is my condiment of choice. It is three out of four of my food groups (with chocolate being the final one) so giving up dairy for a month has been HUGE! Thirdly, the planning — I will not say I have been awesome with the planning or trying new recipes but I am not really eating out and basically bringing/making my food everyday. Thinking about how I want to go forward with it after the 30 days….maybe eating relatively paleo/primal. I have changed my eating habits a lot in the last year. We will see! You all seem to eat pretty healthy so the jump may not be too terrible to go to Whole30. I hope it goes well for you!

I’m excited to see you tackle Whole30! You always have such great meal suggestions (we do your pizza dough, asparagus pesto, and salads pretty regularly). It might just push me over the edge to do one of my own… good luck!

Good luck on whole30! I did it last year and the results were amazing. I loved that I could eat as much as I wanted to. 🙂
If you need some encouragement, I documented the journey here: http://kapachino.com/category/health/whole30/. When I was doing mine I loved firsthand accounts.
Also, are you getting the daily emails? You may not need them, but they were super helpful to me. If you want, I will forward them to you! Just let me know!
Have so much fun at WDS!

Elise, could you talk more about how you use the Book? I’m so new at being a planner that just buying the book seems like a huge step and I’m a little stuck on my game plan for the book. Do you plan out your week on Sundays and then not look at it again? Or do you break down your day every morning and check in the next day? Do you confine small social events (eg coffee with a friend or date night) or daily to-do items (eg pick up dry cleaning) to your iPhone calendar and keep the Book strictly for big picture goals / projects? Or does anything go? Also for people who go to work or school every day, where do you keep your planner? You are definitely not carrying it around all day so how do you keep your intentions for the day with you?
As you can see, I have so many questions and hopefully I am not the only one 🙂

yes! cheese is my big one FOR sure. And snacks. I eat often during the day. I’m not really giving up snacks (which I think is probably good since I’m pregnant) and just trying to make everything I eat compliant. I can already see how VERY important meal planning will be.
Congrats on day 24! good luck moving forward!

I should sign up for those! I assume you can just have them start on the day you’re on? We didn’t start first of the month which it seems like a lot of folks do.

    hi!
I plan to do a video towards the end of July that will answer all of these questions but for now…
Do you plan out your week on Sundays and then not look at it again?
I do schedule out things as I come up with them, but I look at it constantly throughout the week to cross things off and add things.
Do you confine small social events (eg coffee with a friend or date night) or daily to-do items (eg pick up dry cleaning) to your iPhone calendar and keep the Book strictly for big picture goals / projects? Or does anything go?
Everything goes. Like everything that I have to do on Tuesday goes. With the exception of like “make lunch” or “brush teeth.” For example, on my to-do list today is:
    tweet/ig podcast
    sales tax (like file it)
    meal prep
    film d/o
    prep film post
    check in with J&F
check in with Randy (my printer)
check in with tim (my other printer)
I don’t say on there “drop Ellerie off at daycare” or “do laundry” but those are things that I’ll probably just do out of habit.
Also for people who go to work or school every day, where do you keep your planner? You are definitely not carrying it around all day so how do you keep your intentions for the day with you?
I don’t ever carry my book with me (though I will take it to PDX this weekend) so I would love to have someone who does share their story later in the year. 🙂 I am “used to” this method of to-do listing so this stuff sticks in my head. I think overtime, you can find a good balance and method for you. 🙂
hope that helps! Keep an eye out for the video!

Seriously though, it’s been super hot here in Portland. 2+ weeks of 90+ degree weather. Not sure what San Diego weather has been like, but do prepare yourself! When it gets hot here, people get cranky since A/C is not a given. I hope you do get to do some fun stuff! Sometime you’ll bring Ellerie and you’ll go to the zoo and I’ll probably run into you because my son likes to go every week (ha!). Have fun at WDS!!

So excited to see you starting the Whole 30….it has been calling out to me for a while but not sure about starting when there are 2 other adults in the house who are not participating. Not sure what that will look like as far as meals and such

I am a big snacker too! I have been eating a bunch of eggs (which is something I typically don’t do) and fruit — sure helps that it is summer. I bought a tiny tabletop grill and that has helped so, so much. Loving grilled sweet potato — probably my most favorite thing ever. In the reintroduction phase, I am adding cheese back first =)

I think being pregnant is a great time to do a Whole 30! For me, pregnancy was automatically a time of trying to eat as healthy as I could… and automatically ruling out wine and excess caffeine, both of which were hard for me to give up on Whole 30! It was interesting to see what I could give up happily and what was harder. It definitely brings light to our eating habits.
