I have had this project on my list for months. I think the first time I saw them pop-up was on the SouleMama blog and I was SO impressed. I mean seriously. Hers look amazing. Of course I tried to just do it myself and didn't follow any tutorials (which has provided me with mixed results in the past) but this tutorial from Gemma Patford looks great.

For my first basket, I used about 200 feet of synthetic rope (purchased at Lowe's in 1/4 inch) and multiple colors of thread.

IMG_7182

I LOVE the look of the colored thread but didn't like how my basket started to turn in (see how the top is narrower than the bottom and the whole thing is sort of lumpy?). I'm not exactly sure how to sort out this issue aside from just being more conscious of shape as I am working it. I also could have stopped lower and just made more of a rounded bottom catch-all sort of basket which would have been smart.

For my second basket, I ordered cotton rope from Amazon in what I thought for sure was 1/4 inch. NOPE. It was 1/8 inch.

IMG_7187

I figured since I had it, I might as well try to work with it and I sort of love the results. It's tiny, so a bit harder to work with when the coil is small but it gets easier as you go. It was fun to experiment with for sure. I think I'll make a taller one as a plant holder.

Again, I think the fun part here is the multi-colored thread.

I'm just using my normal sewing machine. It's this one from Target and I got it as a bridal shower gift over 5 years ago. It's a total workhorse and doesn't have many bells and whistles so it's a great beginner machine (at least it's been for me.)

These are addicting and shockingly easy for something that looks so cool. I have a feeling these two are the first of many.

The colored thread is fantastic. It definitely gives it personality.

I LOVE this! Defnitely putting it on my list of crafts to make! It would even be great to use for a gift basket for a friend.

I love how the large one turned out! Did you use regular thread? Any special settings for the sewing machine?

I’ve got some novelty “varigated” thread I picked up on clearance a couple years ago. I bet it would be great for this!

Wrapping either all your cord, or sections of it with scraps of material is another great way to add colour and interest to these bowls. Though I am quite taken with your lumpy rainbow one, I am sensing a new coiled basket for the guest room is on the way….

I actually like the shape of your first. Looks organic and good for corralling toys 🙂
I listened to tthe May 5 edition of the NPR How to Do Everything podcast (http://www.npr.org/podcasts/510303/how-to-do-everything; episode is called Small Talk and Penguins) and thought of your Ellerie. There’s a 10yo named Ellerie featured, and she is GREAT.

Ha! I have to laugh because I ordered a giant spool of cotton rope from amazon that turned out to be 1/8″ instead of 1/4″ as well. And then I took too long to return it. I do like the look of the smaller rope baskets too. I put my zig zap stitch on a narrower setting and it makes the whole thing look pretty dainty. And, yes, multi-colored thread is so fun! So it coated white or off-white thread and then dip-dyed baskets. The thread pops then too!

This seems like an easy sewing project since it’s mainly straight lines all the way around!

Yes, the multi-coloured threads make it so much fun.
Is this a good project for someone who is an absolute total beginner?

I have also been stalking soulemama’s rope basket posts with a “I’m really going to get around to doing that” intention that hasn’t yet moved into action. Your post has given me another kick up the rear. Get to it Katie! What is it you always say? Just start!!

It’s been on my to make list for quite some time as well, but I haven’t got around to it, I guess. Yours look amazing. I also love the colorful thread. I actually also love the big basket! Might be another make&give30? I’m sure many people would be interesting in buying a basket like this.

LOVE how these turned out – they look so awesome! Definitely putting them on my to-make list 🙂
I personally love your big basket, but since you mentioned the sides – have you checked out the HonestlyWTF rope bag tutorial?:
    http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-rope-bag/
I just came across it yesterday, and it said that the angle at which you hold the basket while sewing is what affects the narrowness/wideness of the sides – So, the more perpendicular you hold it, the narrower it will be & the less angled you hold it, the wider it will be, and to get super straight sides, you have to hold that angle constant… Anyway, that might be obvious, or you may already know it, but that’s the part that sounds trickiest to me! 🙂 xo

I used all purpose thread – whatever I had… it takes a lot! And then Zig-zag stitch on the widest and longest “zag” 😉

I have had the cord to do this forever, and have tons of fabric strips from quilting that I have planned to use to wrap mine, but I love the WHITE cord with just colored thread. As usual, I love how you just jump in and try things! Beautiful!

Elise! The comments are close for the 3fish studio give away and that’s totally fine! I have to admit that I don’t have time right now to look at blogs on a daily basis (but love catching up and scrolling down older posts ;). I just wanted to say : Thank You SO MUCH for sharing the california print. I came across their website a few months ago. My cousin’s wife was pregnant and he is such a big huge fan of robots that I thought I would get him one of the 3 fish Studio robot print for the birth of their first baby. But. I somehow forgot to save their website. And when their little girl was born I went all over the internet trying to remember their name and could never figure it out. And today : BOOM! I read your post and I recognize their print right away!! I just went on their website and found the print I wanted for my cousin. I am so so happy, you just made my day! My little little cousin is finally going to get her birth present. So cool. Who would have thought…! I love when life sends you a little help through a pretty blog I love 🙂
