For the past few years, I have been sharing book reports on the blog. They are one of my favorite things to write, mostly because I get such great book suggestions in the comments. But one question that always comes up is… "when do you have time to read?"

And I get it. I have a toddler and I work from home. But I also have hobbies that are tremendously important to me! And reading is my absolute favorite hobby. I'd pick (and do pick) books over television, movies and human interaction. (Though, thankfully, not always.)

But that answer isn't enough. So here's a bit more detail…

I try to only read books that I really enjoy. Life is too short to waste time on a book you're not connecting with. I have found that going to the library REALLY helps me stick to this rule. I often check out 5-10 books at a time. That way, if I'm not loving something a few chapters in, I can move on to the next book. It doesn't cost me anything and so I don't feel like I "wasted" money on a book that isn't interesting. When you love a book, you don't want to put it down.

I stopped reading books on my iPad. For a few years, I was using the kindle app almost exclusively. But I found that it was WAY too easy for me to "just click over to IG really quick" and suddenly I was down the rabbit hole of competitive cheerleading rivalries. Switching to real books (another reason to thank the library) has helped me be less distracted and therefore get more reading done.

I would rather Ellerie see me reading than scrolling my phone. Don't get me wrong, I still scroll my phone PLENTY. But I'm trying to make an effort to read a book while Ellerie does something else (draws on her whiteboard, drives her car around, reads her own books, watches Daniel Tiger with breakfast, etc) to set a "good" example and because she's way less interested in Mama's books than she is in Mama's glossy screens. I'm not saying I get a lot of reading done while she's in the room, but a few pages is a few pages.

So with those rules in mind, here's an exact breakdown of when I read (Outlander) last week. (That sheet of paper was from a notepad from Happy Mail.) It was sort of an abnormal week – Paul was working the evening ER shift (2-10pm) so I had more "me time" after I got Ellerie to sleep. Ellerie and I also flew up to Sacramento on Friday morning so that was a little different. But with our work schedules, no weeks are "normal" so this is as good as it gets.

You can see, for the most part I read on the couch after Ellerie is asleep and then right before bed. Even when I'm tired, even after getting home from a wedding at midnight, I read for a bit. It's how I help settle my mind. It's how I calm things down. I never realized just how important those 10-30 minutes were to me until we were in Hawaii. Ellerie refused to sleep in her pack-n-play which meant we were co-sleeping and going to bed at the same time as her. I didn't get my time to read and by Friday night bedtime I felt like I had lost my mind. I NEEDED that time. Paul saw my crazy eyes and took over while I went out on the couch and got 30 minutes in with my book. It was like my world had reset. Good thing (for me) to keep in mind.

Overall, though, reading is like any habit. It gets easier over time to pick a book instead of Instagram. Or to pick a book instead of television. Or to carry a book with you in case of delays or unexpected waiting. It's just habit. That's it. But you have to work at it.

Happy reading!

PS I have no kids yet but hope to and it constantly inspires me when I see moms reading a ton – it helps me know that reading can still be a priority (I didn’t always see that growing up).

I used to be such a book worm and I even study English Literature at university now… but find that I read so little by choice! I’m determined to change that this summer though and I’m loving it so far πŸ™‚ I also think that reading lots helps me be a better writer too! Great post x

LOVE this post, Elise! That little reading time tally brings a huge smile to my face…I have been known to do the same thing just because I love seeing how much time I get to spend doing my favorite thing in the world. My happy place!!
    Take care and happy reading!!

I read a lot. A LOT. Usually a book a day. I don’t have children, so let me just say that. I never thought that I would read on my ipad. Never even knew why people had ipads. I am an AVID library user. I would go and get ten books for the week, and I loved that I just grabbed whatever was new or just caught my eye. I had a hard time not finishing a book once I’d started. Felt like if it got published, then there was some reason for me to finish it. Thank g-d, I got over that. One particularly horrible book made me realize that my time was too precious for that. Anyway… once I realized I could borrow library books on the ipad, I was in heaven. We travel frequently, so it makes it much easier for me to borrow ebooks. Anyway, the whole point of this is to tell you that I often will turn off wifi on my ipad so I can’t get distracted, and spend time flipping between apps. So, basically, my ipad is only used as a kindle. Ahem.

I don’t have children yet but still find it hard to find time to read in between work, study and just life in general. We’ve just recently married and moved into a home together and I don’t yet have my craft space set up. So I have been to the library a couple of times and stocked up on some books and am quite enjoying speading the evenings curled up on the couch under a blanket (it’s winter here!) and reading a good book. Have been reading your reviews and checking out some of the books you’ve been reading for inspiration πŸ™‚

I have been in a huge reading groove recently – very different from the past few years! It doesn’t seem hard to find time to read because I am so into it.
Extra motivator: Since I have been going to the library more often, I see more books that I want to read on the “Lucky Day” shelf (copies of popular books that can’t be renewed or reserved, i.e. it’s your lucky day that the book you want is here) and this encourages me to read them – quick! – before they’re due, instead of knowing that I can just renew, renew, renew and then return them (sometimes without reading them!). Even though it’s free, I still have this mindset of getting my ‘money’s’ worth – you make a good point to refute that, though!
*Since I last read consistently, my skimming habit has gotten worse (it feels like a combination of “oh I have time to read – better read fast to make the most of it,” “let’s get to the good parts,” and “I’m just so excited to be reading – must keep reading more more more!”). Maybe once I realize that I can always have time to read, my brain and body will calm down about it so I can take my time.

I am finally coming to this realization, and it’s very freeing – read what I want and it’s okay to not finish a book. A few months ago, I didn’t finish a book that I kept seeing positive reviews for because I wasn’t interested in it. When I saw it at the library recently, I figured I’d give it another go since so many other people loved it. I made it through, but it was kind of a struggle, and not worth it. I kept hoping there would be some turning point where I would love it. I should have just trusted my gut! πŸ™‚

As a Mama of two boys, I find if I sit in their playroom reading my book, they play happily without much intervention or need for conflict resolution. If I go into the kitchen to unpack the dishwasher, or I check emails or do anything ‘useful’ – then a conflict will break out or they will invariably follow or want me! But if I’m reading my book in the same room, all is great! So I happily indulge!!! My passion is fulfilled (check) and their play is at ease (check!) Best of all, after losing myself to motherhood, to read again (something I’d always done previously) makes me feel like I’ve gained some of ‘me’ back. So I really relate to your post Elise and thank you for your book recommendations.

I am the same way, Elise. I HAVE to read in order to transition from work-to-home-to-bed. Plus I just love to read. Our difference, I love my Kindle way too much to go back to printed books. πŸ™‚

I really connect with what you said about wanting Ellerie to see you reading. Last year, I heard Levar Burton (you know… Reading Rainbow!) speak at a conference, and he talked a lot about his mom. (I was pregnant at the time so it made me cry all the tears.) Anyway, he said that it was so important that his mom not only read TO him as a child, but also read IN FRONT OF him. Love it.

I agree it is also a time for my mind to reset and relax. I read almost every night and at lunch every day. I take a book with me every where because you just never know when you may get stuck waiting for someone or something to happen. I jump back and forth between real books and digital. I like both, I like the option. Especially if I forgot my book, I know I can jump on my Kindle or Nook app and pick up a book to pass the time. My daughter was not the reader when she was in grade school but thanks to a close friend who inspired her to read and gave her a book “Mango Color Shape”, she now reads more frequent than before. And I highly recommend ^ when little E is in Middle School!

Love this post!! I read before bed too…sometimes just 10 minutes at a time, but I read Girl on a Train last weekend and then spent every waking second (even when on kid duty) trying to read it!!

I love this and I love reading! I have to admit I use my Kindle to read, but I check out ebooks from the library. My prime reading time is every night before bed. I literally fall asleep reading (hence the ease of the Kindle). When people ask how I go to sleep so easily, this is my secret. Books clear my head. I love getting lost in a book, its story, and the characters! Plus, when I commute I listen to audiobooks. Not quite the same, but I like the escape.

This is such a great post I really need to learn to give up on a book if I’m not enjoying it…. But I always want to know what happens to the characters even if I don’t like the story!
And here is a book recommendation for you: The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making by Catherynne M Valente. I have to admit this book took me a loooong time to read as it didn’t suck me in with a gripping storyline… however… it is full of so many lovely little quotes and passages and “aaaah that’s what life is about” sort of realisations. It is the first fiction book that I actually highlighted passages of whilst reading it (albeit using the kindle highlight function!). An adults Alice in Wonderland.

    Hi!!
I have to completely agree on choosing books over movies, tv, people or anything else. Reading is my absolute favorite and after getting a large quantity of books I so want a book reading vacation. My library holds always seem to come in at the same time πŸ˜‰ I am currently reading book #50 and it is largely due to my toddler not sleeping through the night and sleep training her. Most days I read while she plays or when she naps or after bedtime like you. Reading definitely keeps me balanced and happy.

I love libraries and reading. As a kid, I even tried to read while walking to school (it didn’t work out very well). I love checking out a bunch of books at a time, but also listen to audiobooks every day. Most libraries allow you to check out ebooks and audiobooks online too.

I recently wrote a paper on this EXACT topic: the amount of time parents spend scrolling their phones in front of their kids and its (negative, duh) effect on the child and the family. It is a wildly fascinating topic (to a boring person like me, ha!) and is one that is under A LOT of scrutiny right now, as is the effect of technology in general on our lives, and of course there’s the never-ending debate about paper v. electronic reading.
Anyway, I’ve always been a big reader and I try to instill its importance in my kids. Thankfully, all three of ’em are “into” reading and love taking trips to the library and the bookstore. This year we even rearranged our living room to discourage TV screen-time (read about that here: http://www.lifeoutloud.kelseymcevoy.com/2015/05/rearranging-priorities-by-rearranging-our-furniture/) and it’s been amazing!

whenever people ask me that i say, “you watch TV right?” it’s probably snobby, but it’s the quickest way to make them realize they chose a different activity than me every single day. you make time for what you want to make time for. period. πŸ˜‰
i read non-fiction so i don’t follow your book report posts, but it makes me happy to see library books in action anywhere. maybe i was a librarian in a past life? xo

I read books ten minutes at a time now. Whenever my boys are playing or in time out or coloring or reading. Snook lives in my purse. It works so much better then when I would only read if I had a set amount of time to devote to quiet reading. Some days I can get hours in and some days I read and re-read the same page because of the interruptions but that’s ok.

Great post. There’s so much in the blog world that I cannot relate to or don’t have an interest in or some other variable that turns me off of a lot of blogs, but reading is right up my alley. So I love these book posts. By the way, have you checked out Climb the Stacks by Ashley Riordan? She has a website and a YouTube channel and it is awesome.
