For the past few years, I have been sharing book reports on the blog. They are one of my favorite things to write, mostly because I get such great book suggestions in the comments. But one question that always comes up is… "when do you have time to read?"

And I get it. I have a toddler and I work from home. But I also have hobbies that are tremendously important to me! And reading is my absolute favorite hobby. I'd pick (and do pick) books over television, movies and human interaction. (Though, thankfully, not always.)

But that answer isn't enough. So here's a bit more detail…

I try to only read books that I really enjoy. Life is too short to waste time on a book you're not connecting with. I have found that going to the library REALLY helps me stick to this rule. I often check out 5-10 books at a time. That way, if I'm not loving something a few chapters in, I can move on to the next book. It doesn't cost me anything and so I don't feel like I "wasted" money on a book that isn't interesting. When you love a book, you don't want to put it down.

I stopped reading books on my iPad. For a few years, I was using the kindle app almost exclusively. But I found that it was WAY too easy for me to "just click over to IG really quick" and suddenly I was down the rabbit hole of competitive cheerleading rivalries. Switching to real books (another reason to thank the library) has helped me be less distracted and therefore get more reading done.

I would rather Ellerie see me reading than scrolling my phone. Don't get me wrong, I still scroll my phone PLENTY. But I'm trying to make an effort to read a book while Ellerie does something else (draws on her whiteboard, drives her car around, reads her own books, watches Daniel Tiger with breakfast, etc) to set a "good" example and because she's way less interested in Mama's books than she is in Mama's glossy screens. I'm not saying I get a lot of reading done while she's in the room, but a few pages is a few pages.

IMG_2189

So with those rules in mind, here's an exact breakdown of when I read (Outlander) last week. (That sheet of paper was from a notepad from Happy Mail.) It was sort of an abnormal week – Paul was working the evening ER shift (2-10pm) so I had more "me time" after I got Ellerie to sleep. Ellerie and I also flew up to Sacramento on Friday morning so that was a little different. But with our work schedules, no weeks are "normal" so this is as good as it gets.

You can see, for the most part I read on the couch after Ellerie is asleep and then right before bed. Even when I'm tired, even after getting home from a wedding at midnight, I read for a bit. It's how I help settle my mind. It's how I calm things down. I never realized just how important those 10-30 minutes were to me until we were in Hawaii. Ellerie refused to sleep in her pack-n-play which meant we were co-sleeping and going to bed at the same time as her. I didn't get my time to read and by Friday night bedtime I felt like I had lost my mind. I NEEDED that time. Paul saw my crazy eyes and took over while I went out on the couch and got 30 minutes in with my book. It was like my world had reset. Good thing (for me) to keep in mind.

Overall, though, reading is like any habit. It gets easier over time to pick a book instead of Instagram. Or to pick a book instead of television. Or to carry a book with you in case of delays or unexpected waiting. It's just habit. That's it. But you have to work at it.

Happy reading!

    YES. So this.
I’m reading “Longbourn” right now and I have a doctor’s appointment later today. Honestly my thought is “YES! I get to read in the waiting room!!”

Thank you so much for this. As a librarian I get so frustrated with parents who say they don’t have time to read – I think it’s so important for our children to see us reading for pleasure even if it’s just 10 minutes while they’re doing other things.
And thanks for saying yes it’s ok to quit books you’re not into – we do not check at the library to see if you’ve read the entire thing!

As a non-parent with a more traditional 9-5 job, I don’t have nearly as much going on as some – but I would whole-heartedly agree that making reading a priority is the only way to get it done. My degree is in English Literature, which meant I got so burnt out reading that I didn’t do much for years. I’ve slowly been getting back into it, but this year I set myself a goal of reading 100 books and I’ve been surprised how easy it is to find the time when finding the time is a priority. I probably won’t try and read this many again, because it has meant other things CAN’T be a priority, but it’s definitely interesting to find out how much you can read when you try!

I would love to see this same thing applied to when you fit in crafting? You make quite a few things, but when you did your day break downs, I didn’t see mention of craft time. I would love to get inspired on how to fit it in on an already full schedule.

My mom loves to read and I think of that as one of the best traits I got from her – so Ellerie is a lucky girl. 🙂 My mom tells the story of how, when I was a kid, I would always bring a book with me when leaving the house “so I don’t get bored.” And I still do that to this day- it makes me feel itchy if I don’t have reading material, even in the form of a good book on Kindle on my phone, when I venture out.
And on the subject, huge plug for the Kindle phone app. I totally prefer paper books too when reading at home (reading on my phone makes me even more likely to check Instagram), but love having something on my phone that I can flick through when standing in line or waiting on the Metro platform. Often this means I have two books going at once – one on Kindle and one in paper. It can be kind of an awkward system (especially when I’m more into one than the other) but it generally works pretty well for me!

I’m totally the same way! I actually look forward to long metro rides (my typical commute is just four stops, so I always have to get off the train just as I’m getting into a book) because they mean extra reading time!

Another great example of why you’re so disciplined, Elise! 🙂 I love reading, too, but I’m more of a binge reader and have to work hard to read a little bit each day instead of wasting a whole day with my face in a book. (Not that reading is a waste, but you know, I have work to do…) I’m also that type that if I read before bed, suddenly I’ll find that it’s 4 in the morning and I’m so close to finishing…and then I’m exhausted the next day instead of relaxed. Oops.

I find that reading has such a calming effect on my. I try to keep a book or magazine with me at all times so that something little like an extra long wait to pick up a prescription or a friend who is running late becomes found time for reading instead of wasted time.
Also, nothing helps me fall asleep faster than reading. Especially good old paper books. Somehow my Kindle just doesn’t have the same effect.

So happy you are reading Outlander! Now you’ve got years of good reading ahead of you with that series! 🙂
One of my goals this summer was to just read 3 books. I too am an avid reader but I have a 9 month old and was just barely keeping my head above water until a few months ago. Now I am spending about 30 minutes a few nights week reading a book again. It feels divine!

Did you like Outlander (it’s called Cross Stitch here in the UK)? I love Jamie Fraser! My OLW for this year is give and part of giving to myself was supposed to be the practice of carrying a book about with me … for the times when I was on the Tube or a little too early for school pick-up. For the first part of the year I was doing really well, but somewhere along the way I seem to fallen off the wagon. Time to get back on!

I’m glad you wrote this post. I’ve often wondered how you plow through those big stacks of books each month! I think the hardest lesson for me to learn is to not waste my time on a book I’m not enjoying. It’s hard because sometimes if I stick it out, I’ll end up liking it. But other times I feel like there’s so many good books out there to read, why struggle to get through one I’m not actually enjoying?
I recently finished I Am Pilgrim on your recommendation and LOVED it! Well, as much as you can love a book about biological warfare and terrorists. I hope you’ll keep the book reports coming!

I’ve definitely changed my reading habits since having kiddos, but it’s gotten so much easier as they get older. I fit in reading in the moments when they play by themselves, but for sure after they’re asleep is the best time. I also use the Kindle app on my phone so I can more easily bring a book to work to read during lunchtime. I’m like you, though – I need those moments in the evening to read and relax.

I don’t have kids, so admittedly I can fit in a lot more reading, but I ALWAYS read before bed (looking at a piece of paper is much better on the eyes/brain before sleep than looking at a bright screen)
…. and I also always read over my lunch. I got in the habit at my last day job (when my ‘lunch break’ was at 7pm and none of my co-workers could go at the same time), and now that I work for myself I do the same. Lunch, a little reading, then back to work.

For a few minutes before work (5-15 minutes depending on the day), at my lunch hour, and for at least an hour before bed. I’m doing a physical book and an audio book right now, in hopes that the audio book will motivate to spend my lunch hour walking to get my steps (my step counts are pathetic on the daily).

I have to take a train to work, and I love that I have that built-in time for reading. Reading a book is my transition time between work and home, and I love that it makes me feel like the time is never wasted. I get through so many books! It’s interesting about reading on the phone vs. real books. I hadn’t thought much about that, as far as what the kids see. I’ve been reading mostly on the kindle app because it’s easier on the train, and our library has tons of e-books so it’s often easier to check out one electronically versus finding time to make it to the actual library. I don’t spend much time on my phone around the kids, and when I do it’s usually because I’m reading a book I just don’t want to put down. I do try to make a point of letting them know I’m reading a book, but I wonder if I should also make a point of reading physical books at home. Food for thought!

I’m a binge reader too! Always have been – I blame (in the best way possible) reading the Harry Potter series when I was younger, being desperate to finish and find out what happened! So, I need to figure out a better way of just reading bits at a time.. maybe I should set a timer..

I’m a big reader too, but both my kids sleep in our bed and I go to sleep at the same time as them. I dream of the day I can put them down in their own beds, but we started on this bedsharing path (which was great for awhile) and now it’s not so easy to change.
I recently started waking up earlier, since I’m a morning person, and now I have a solid 30 minutes of reading for pleasure before the kids wake up (and before I allow myself to look at my phone – it’s in another room). I work outside the home, so I always read during my lunch break too. It works!

I noticed lately that I leave a few in progress books lying around the house, so whatever room I am in I have one close at hand. I also treated myself to a new bag recently…one large enough to fit a couple of books and a notepad. I find myself less interested in things like IG and FB when I am into a good book.

I constantly have 2-3 books going at any one time: One on my phone (for those impromptu “hurry up and wait times”), one on my ipad (usually on the bike at the gym – so much more portable than a big book), and a library book at home. And I strongly advocate the “have the kid see you reading” concept – it makes them want to read too. Even if it’s just the newspaper or a magazine.
PS – Currently on the wait list at the library for Station Eleven after reading your review:)

I love this! I have a book with me at all times. I leave one in the car, too. I usually read before bed, and with my first cup of coffee in the morning. Because I have one with me always, I can read for a few minutes at unexpected times. At work, I usually can read a few pages between clients. I think all these little bits of time add up. At night, if I find I am reading too long..then I limit myself to one more chapter.

Thanks for this peek into how you read so many books within a busy life. For years when my children were young and I worked full time, I never read a whole book. Now that I’m retired, I read for a short time around lunch time and then in the evening. I’d much rather dive into a book than watch TV or check the computer. It would be so easy to read all day (which is a guilty pleasure now and then) but I try to be more physically active on a regular basis. My grandchildren are too young yet to read themselves, but love reading time before bed. It’s so important to start that love of books early. Good for you for setting that example for Ellerie.

I am so with you on modelling the ‘book vs screen’ choice for our kids. And I think getting your child used to seeing you read is a great thing to do when she is young! I read a TON to my kids but they aren’t used to seeing me read myself. Good habit to develop. I also like to read for a few minutes before bed, no matter what time it is. And I like how you point out that reading is a habit that must be worked on like anything else, in order to make it part of your life.
My biggest challenge with reading these days is that I can’t handle anything heavy or serious. In fact I only want to read things that I know are going to inspire me, so that tends to be quilting books right now. I’ll get a stack out from the library and flip through one before I go to sleep. I like drifting off to sleep thinking about making pretty things, or colour combinations.

There are totally seasons. Right now I am not getting in ANY crafting time. But since crafting for the blog can be part of my job, I tend to fit it in when needed into my “work days” while Ellerie is at daycare. When I was knitting all those blankets, I was reading less and knitting more while watching TV. I think I have to “pick” hobbies. I can’t read all the books and make all the stuff a the same time. 🙂

Yes! Thank you – this is pretty much how I get reading done with a toddler and an odd-ball work schedule too, and I feel the same as you about all of the above! Reading is my favorite hobby too, and like you, I have learned the library keeps me from wasting time on books I don’t love which makes reading even more fun. Little makes me happier than a new stack of library books, and like you, I also NEED that time before bed to read. My mom always had a book going and read before bed every night – of course I wanted to be just like her when I was little, lol, and as an adult I can honestly say the love of reading is one of best gift she could have given me. I totally think our kiddos learn more from seeing us read for enjoyment than anything else we TELL them about reading. 🙂

I realised for me reading is a matter of filling the time gaps. I’ll have a bus commute of fifteen minutes which I generally use to dive into a book. A good read makes me not want to get off on my stop (but I do get off, ’cause I am a good girl). If for any reason I take the car, I never read. Although I am home 30 min earlier with the car. No time gap to fill, no reading. Apart from Harry Potter. For that I cleared my schedule. 😄.

I love this post! I am an avid library goer as well and with my 10 month old daughter it can be sometimes hard to read. Do you order books online through your local library? I find this so helpful as I check out bestseller lists on amazon and then go and order from my library. Then all I have to do is go and pick them up once they are available as I find it so hard to find time to browse when I have a fussy child. I love that it saves time and money.

I know your pain – if I don’t a book available to read, one that I want to read, even if I can’t read it at the time, I get a little wild-eyed. My mom always had a book going and I find I always have a book going at home and an easy read that floats in the car for those unexpected got-to-work-10-minutes-early type days when I can relax for a few minutes. I’m also a before bed reader, even if we’ve been out until midnight. Reading is the best!

I use the library to check out ebooks or real paper books 😉 My kindle is great for the bus, but I’m trying to have at least 30 minutes of no-screen time before bed now, so I’ve been checking out the real deal from the library and reading before bed. Some days though, I wonder how others fit it all in! This motivated me to carve out the time!

I know quite a few people who tell me they want to read (I am always reading something, books are my favorite) but that they are too busy, when I know that they just prefer other hobbies (or reality TV marathons) to picking up a book. I say, read if you want to, don’t if you don’t. I don’t judge either way. I just believe that, as with every hobby, you will make time/find time to do what you want to do. And always read what YOU want, no matter what it is or what people are saying. It’s a personal experience to be enjoyed and everyone experiences books differently.
Also, it is always nice to be reminded that not every book needs to be finished. I started a book (that I did actually purchase, so there was added pressure) that I just couldn’t get into. I haven’t completely given up on it, but I know that it’s not what I want to be reading right now. If the time is right, it will come. If not, there are plenty more books out there!

You have time for whatever you make time for. I will then ask them if they watch tv, go out to eat, go to the gym or whatever and if they say yes then I say that is what you choose to spend your time on – I choose to spend my time reading. I have also heard the excuse that “I have a baby I can’t read” Not true, I used to read while feeding my kids, when they napped, while they were in their baby swing, I just choose to spend my extra time on reading.
