Lots of books this month!

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight | this was interesting. It's a book about a girl who supposedly commits sucide but the mom doesn't really believe it and she pieces together the story of what happened through emails and texts from the few months before her daughter died. It's told through the mom's eyes right after the incident and the daughters right before. Interesting, though not my favorite of the month.

Broken Harbor by Tana French | another thriller that I couldn't put down. I was excited about after reading The Likeness in April. I liked this one a lot and was surprised to find out whodonit at the end.

The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty | not my favorite by this author (and I have read most of her books). It's an easy simple read – but I felt like it wasn't that believeable. I don't know.

Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel | this is my favorite book of 2015 so far. It's an "end of the world" story but actually tells how it all ends. You get to see what civilization crumbling actually looks like and then what's left of it which (to me) was a more interesting take than so many books who just tell the "post-crumble" story. What I really loved about this book is that it wasn't a love story. You're not watching to young adult characters find their way together in a brave new world (which I've done too many times). Instead, you're watching very different characters (of various ages) learn how to survive in a way that felt interesting and inspiring. I really enjoyed this.

Devil in the White City by Erik Larson | this book is a true story about the events surrounding the World's Fair in Chicago in the late 1800s. It tells the story of getting the event together while simultaneously telling the story of Dr Holmes, a violent serial killer from the same time. It's a documentary and seriously interesting but it took me a really long time to get through and I ended up skimming the end. I think I wasn't in the right mood for it.

We are Called to Rise by Laura McBride | I'd heard really good things about this book. I wasn't disappointed – it was well told and the characters wove together beautifully – but it didn't grab me the way I wanted it to. I'd recommend it though.

Whew. Big month and judging by the stack of books on my nightstand June is going to be even bigger. What are you reading right now?

What a great round-up. Station Eleven was the first book that I was able to power read post pregnancy and it’s intertwined stories still (wonderfully) haunt me.

Station Eleven is great. I just read Kimberely’s McCreight’s second book “Where They Found Her” which was a much better thriller than “Amelia”, which I didn’t care for. I’m also racing through “The Book of Speculation” which comes out in June which is kind of like The Night Circus but with books.

I loved the podcast today!! (Well, I love it every week. But you know what I mean. It’s like when podcasters say “I’m so excited this week for Guest X!” LOL)
Anyway, the part where you talk about money made me think that I could listen to you teach about money all day! If you ever made one, I’d totally take a small-business course that got into the nitty gritty of finances… they’re an area I’m scared of, but when they’re explained well, I totally love them. I think you explain them very well.
And just overall, I really loved this episode… loved hearing your thoughts!

I love your book recommendations. I requested Station Eleven from the library as soon as I saw in on your IG feed. It sounds awesome, and I can’t wait for my copy to come in!
Have you read any Sarah Dessen novels? YA, but completely wonderful. Her new book, Saint Anything, was lovely and different from a lot of her other ones… but very well done.

Thank you so much! I am so far from an expert on money but it would be fun to share my experiences. Thanks for the idea. 🙂

Thanks for the tips! Yes, I love thrillers but wouldn’t describe Amelia as one. I’ll be sure to check out the second book.

I have not read her books. Sometimes I really struggle with YA. Can’t put my finger on why, but I’ll try anything!

There’s usually some element of romance in the books, but it’s well done…. not really “high school” romance, if that makes sense. I would start with The Truth About Forever or This Lullaby if you want to try them. Those are my favorites! 🙂

I’m always so fascinated to read book reports, and I have a lot of fun trying to figure out someone else’s taste and how it intersects with my own. Station Eleven is one of my favorites of the year so far too! I also love Erik Larson’s documentary style writing, but having read two of his other books I do think he gets bogged down in the details which makes his books harder to get through. Devil in the White City has been my favorite of his so far.
I just read The Light Between Oceans which was devastating to this mama’s heart, although beautiful. I also just powered through Love & Logic which had so much awesome parenting advice and strategy. And now I’m reading The Magician’s Land, the third in the series (and in my opinion they keep getting better), but I know you didn’t like The Magicians as much as I did. 🙂

Reconstructing Amelia is definitely on my list for next month. So far for May I’ve finished Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (took me a bit to get into it), The Girl You Left Behind by Jojo Moyes (so good!), Midnight Crossroads by Charlaine Harris (If you liked the Sookie Stackhouse series, you’ll like this one as well) & I just started The Dinner by Herman Koch (which is really good so far).
The second Midnight, Texas series book, Day Shift is on my June list and also The Paying Guests by Sarah Waters.
So glad you’re doing these book reports!
p.s. Most libraries now allow you to borrow eBooks, so if you’ve got a library card I would definitely look into it! 🙂

I love Erik Larson books…I love nonfiction and historical fiction best, so historical nonfiction that reads like a story? LOVE.
I’m reading Meg Wolitzer’s new one (she wrote The Interestings), Belzhar. It’s a YA novel having to do with my all-time favorite writer, Sylvia Plath (in a really roundabout way), so I’m enjoying it. I have The Martian waiting for me next, which I’ve heard is really good. I’ll try out your favorite book–sounds really good!

Interesting to hear your take on Station Eleven. I was contemplating it but read quite a few negative reviews (although I can’t remember which site I was on when I read them.
I just finished Attachments by Rainbow Rowell. Love how easy it is to devour her books.
Next up: The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. My first by her but she seems to get loads of good reviews.

Have you read Blindess by José Saramago? Your description of Station Eleven (which I haven’t read) reminded me of it. Blindness takes a look at what happens to humanity when everyone slowly turns blind- how people treat others, what they think they can get away with, what they hold onto. It was also turned into a movie but I haven’t heard great things about it. It’s one of my favorite books and it gives you lots to think about, though it has it’s dark moments, which may not be for everyone.
I’m currently reading a book called “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction” by Dr. Gabor Maté. It goes through the biopsychosocial roots of addiction and weaves stories of pain and trauma from clients with whom he has worked. We are bringing the author in for a presentation next week so I’m trying to finish it by then!

I always love your book reports! How are the Tana French novels as far as “showing” graphic scenes? I have to be careful about what I read, because images seem to stick with me depending on how detailed they are written. However, I love suspense…I have read Gone Girl, Reconstructing Amelia, etc.

Thank-you for this! I’ve been itching for some new reads for awhile now and this is a really good start! The last couple I’ve picked up, I had a hard time getting through the first few chapters (Hate that!) so looking forward to some good one’s.

Also, Life After Life by Kate Atkinson – have you read it? It’s one of my favorites ever!
PS. Currently reading The Girl on the Train and I’m obsessed and suspicious of everyone around me.

I agree, hypnotist’s love story not as good as Liane Moriarty’s others.
Just finished girl on the train. It was a page turner for sure, but overall not my fave. Didn’t love any of the characters.
Trying to get into nick hornby’s latest, funny girl, but I may just not be in the mood. I really want to read it, though!

Station Eleven is now on my summer reading list.
I don’t get a lot of time to “read for fun” during the school year (HS English teacher!), but I just recently devoured All My Puny Sorrows by Miriam Toews (not exactly new). The author, herself, lost her father and sister to suicide, and this novel comes from the perspective of the sister watching her sibling suffer with several suicide attempts. Moving, haunting and beautiful…and Canadian. 😉

I loved Station Eleven. I think what made it so compelling, was even though it was an end of civilization book, it was ultimately uplifting. The power of the human spirit.

My aunt bought me Devil in the White City for xmas a few years ago. I LOVED it, but it’s so historically dense, it took forever to get through, and like you said: although it was SO interesting, I also skimmed towards the end. Definitely a great book – and I learned a ton, but a much longer, denser read than I prefer.
