I have been wearing my Fitbit Flex for one full year. And by wearing, I mean I have worn it nearly 24 hours a day, seven days a week for one full year. Today I wanted to share a "review" and why I think this fitness tracking method has worked for me.

Screen Shot 2015-04-24 at 11.55.13 AM

First some basic details:

I got a Fitbit in April 2014 because I had seen a few folks using them and sharing on social media. "That looks…addicting." I thought. And placed my order.

When I started wearing it, I was a few weeks out from quitting pumping breastmilk for my (then) 10 month old daughter and felt like I might as well spend all that extra time I'd be saving walking plus I wanted to get my body back to "normal."

When I first wore it, I was shocked to find that even with my long daily walks I was only clocking in about 7000 steps, not the "recommended" 10k.

Untitled-1

I have gone through weeks where I hit my 10k goal everyday and weeks were I feel glad to just get that star one day out of seven.

I have lost ten pounds in the past year without changing my diet or doing any other exercise other than working for those ten thousand steps everyday. This point needs some clarifying though… I think the first few pounds dropped off quickly when my post-breastfeeding hormones regulated. (Everyone experiences hormone changes differently, but my body held onto extra weight while I was producing milk.)

Without a doubt, though, at 30, I feel the best in my body and clothes that I ever have. I seriously thank the fitbit for this. I have tried a lot of different exercise routines and even more crazy diets in my life and this one (walking!) is the easiest on my body by far. Plus! I'm happy and never hungry!

Technical details:

I charge my Fitbit every 3-5 days while I sleep. It plugs right into my USB wall charger and takes probably an hour and half to go from empty to full. You get an email reminder when the battery is low.

IMG_8191

I have had a few different color plastic bracelets and also have a Tory Birch rose gold one that I love for fancier days. Before I got the fancy bracelet, if I had to go some where nice (like a wedding in the photo above) I just tucked the tracker into my bra. Worked great.

I find the tracker to be very consistent. And remember, what matters isn't that it's perfectly accurate but that it's consistently inaccurate.

Twice in the past year, my tracker has stopped charging properly and both times after trying to troubleshoot myself, Fitbit sent me a replacement free of charge within two days (I emailed their customer service and it didn't matter that I had purchased through amazon). I am not sure if this is just because it was in the first year? But if it happens again and I have to buy a new one myself, I would for sure. $100 a year is cheaper than a gym membership (and I don't have to drive to the gym).

IMG_7529

Who is the Fitbit for?

Despite the fact that my experience has been so positive, it would be insane for me to blindly recommend the Fitbit. I actually bet this sort of tracking wouldn't work for most people. It takes a sort of uniquely obsessive personality to really click with this constant feedback.

If you're considering one, these are the questions I would ask:

  • Do you want to be "healthier"?
  • Do you not already have a workout plan that's working well?
  • Do you feel like you don't have time to exercise?
  • Do you actually like walking (or running)?
  • Do you feel motivated by goals and statistics?
  • Would you seriously wear a piece of plastic around your wrist every day?

If you answered YES to all of these questions then I would say it (or other similar workout tracker) could be a great fit for you. If you answered no to one or more, I'd say "ehhhh, might not be worth it" but would still try out a pedometer app for your phone and see what you think. (If you carry your phone all the time, you can just skip the bracelet all together and use an app like Health for free!)

IMG_5552

The most important thing to keep in mind is the Fitbit doesn't work. YOU WORK.

It's like buying weights or signing up for an exercise class. That's just a step in the right direction. The actual improvement comes from the consistent use of those weights and repeated visits to that exercise class. That's the hard part. And only the hard parts make real change.

IMG_6964

But as far as the Fitbit goes, it's not really hard. For most people, the physical act of walking isn't hard. It doesn't take special clothing or shoes or equipment. It's not expensive. But finding time to walk is hard. Getting up from the couch after dinner to do laps through your house is hard. And those two things are hugely vital for me to actually hit my numbers.

My success has come from GETTING UP off the couch at 9pm when I am still 2000 steps to goal. I walk laps from my bedroom to the kitchen and listen to podcasts or read a book – yes, while walking. That has been the real difference. Of course, if I didn't have a Fitbit, I could still get up and walk. But when I don't have that number looking at me it doesn't feel as concrete or "worthwhile" (but we've already established I am a bit obsessive).

I think my best piece of advice if you recently purchased one and are having trouble (or bought one months ago and felt discouraged) is to switch your goal. If you normally get 3000 steps a day, set your goal to 4000. Don't shoot for 10k and be bummed! Go for something reasonable that you can hit consistently. When I was first pregnant and felt like a hungover garbage can, I dropped my goal to 5000 steps for two weeks and focused on reaching that instead (I still didn't, btw). Keeping things manageable is always the key.

IMG_9629

You can also switch your focus. Maybe getting those 30 active minutes everyday is much more important to you than 10k steps. Awesome. Change it up and make that your daily goal instead.

Like anything, this is about finding what really works for you. Good luck! Happy stepping!

Happy Fitbit anniversary! Love your photo montage of the two of you together 😉
I bought a Fitbit last summer on your recommendation and am totally in love, though we definitely have our on and off weeks. And I do the same thing pacing back and forth in my apartment at night if I’m close to 10,000 but not quite there. My boyfriend thought I was a crazy person until I got a Fitbit Charge for Christmas and gave him my Flex, and now we pace together – or better yet, go for neighborhood walks. 🙂

Step trackers are the best!! I have a slightly random question. I know once when I was stalking your archives you mentioned reading a book about food that changed your out look on eating. I’ve tried searching the site but just can’t find it again. Do you remember the title by chance?
    Thanks!!

Thanks for this great post on the Fitbit. I love mine. It helps me stay connected to my body and to reality–I know which days are more active and which are restorative. When I get in a long run, I really feel like a Fitbit rock star! My tech issues were solved when I became quite methodical: I upload to my phone each night before bed and I charge once a week.

So cool to see those huge 1 year numbers!
I’ve become really interested in getting a Fitbit since getting a dog and wanting to lose weight. So far I’ve been using Health on my iPhone, but it’s hard to always have my phone on me, especially when I’m trying to plow through chores while wearing pocketless yoga pants haha. I have LOVED having that “tangible” steps goal and have slowly started to bring my weekly average up and hit that 10k more days than not. It’s so addicting! I really like that I can get a gauge of how much walking I get in with my dog, too so I can (somewhat) monitor and make sure she’s getting enough active time. I’m thinking taking the plunge would be worth it for me, especially since I’m trying to find some sort of exercise plan and yep – definitely cheaper than a gym membership and totally worth it to not have to drive anywhere to get motivated to move!
Thanks for sharing your experience! I’ll be sure to use your links if I do end up ordering 🙂

I realize this post is about your fitbit (love mine too, but like you I’m obsessive), but you mentioned pumping vs. breast feeding. I’m due with my first in November and want to pump exclusively which I believe is what you did. Would you mind sharing publicly, or contacting me directly to share your experience and how it worked out for you and maybe some tips? I can’t find much info on exclusively pumping. Thanks so much!

I’ve been going to work and moving around the city by bike for many years, but recently I moved into a new apartment with no lift, and since I own a foldable bike and have to carry it up and down four flights of stairs every single time I use it, I was becoming a bit lazy and taking the bus or the metro more than before. And I wasn’t feeling great, both physically and mentally.
It’s been two weeks since I started using a phone app to track my bike rides, and my habits have changed drastically! I’m more fit, more awake when I get to work, happier… and I love seeing how many kilometres I’ve got under my belt in just a couple of weeks! I am sure I’m going to be tracking my physical activity from now on, because it really gets me motivated to move more.

I have SUCH mixed feelings on the fitbit and similar devices. I think they’re useful when used as a guiding step in the right direction toward a healthier lifestyle (as you mentioned) for those coming back from an injury or the morbidly obese or those new to exercise, or when used in conjunction with other tracking processes to record metadata for a serious athlete in any given discipline, but I don’t think that when used alone the fitbit (as a concept, not as a device) is a successful ‘workout.’ I won’t get into all the issues I have with these types of devices here in your space but I will say that I think it’s really important for people to keep in mind exactly what you said: the fitbit doesn’t work – the person does.
I love that you write such a honest and non-blanket review of this 🙂 And YAY! that it’s helped you so greatly!

“When I was first pregnant and felt like a hungover garbage can” … LOLed at work on that one because that was exactly how I felt during that time. 🙂
I have a different type of fitness tracker (got it for free from someone who works retail) and still need to get used to wearing it. Numbers are a huge motivator for me too!

This is a great review, and great insight. My husband and I have toyed with the idea of each getting a Fitbit, but have resisted so far, as I’m not sure it’s quite the right kind of motivation we need.
BUT, my sister got one a year or so ago (her boss got every person at her office one who wanted – so awesome), and she’ll walk laps during her lunch break to make sure she’ll make her step count.

I got a Fitbit to motivate me to walk after baby girl comes (in one month)! Does it count the steps accurately when both hands are on your stroller? It seems like it wouldn’t pick up steps if your hands are stationary. Do you attach it to your shoe instead? Thanks!

I never ever comment on blog posts, but this post made me come out of my shell. Thank you for motivating me. I got a fitbit last year some time. I wear it on and off. Mostly off. I mostly wear it for 3 weeks in the spring and 3 weeks in autum, when we count steps at work. Reading your post made me want to try and copy your achievement. Not loosing 10 pounds, though I would love to do that, but that is not my goal. Just wearing it for a whole year and become more aware of how much or little I move my body will be a step in the right direction for me. So thank you for being an inspiration to me.

This is great motivation to get my fitbit working for me again! I purchased mine after my first trimester ended, and I’ve done ok with it but have only hit my goal of 10K steps a handful of times. I like the idea of lowering my goal temporarily to actually get the thrill of reaching my goal – and getting the fitbit to shake and light up.

i was a loyal fitbit wearer until i had my baby and started racking up 2000 steps in the middle of the night, in the rocking chair. so i took it off then but we’re done with middle of the night wake ups (knock on wood) and my apple watch will be here in may so i’m excited to start tracking again. 🙂

I LOVE my fitbit! Have had it since December and I am still obsessed with the tracking of my steps, heart rate, mileage, sleep, etc.! The only “technical” difficulty I found where the fit bit tracks incorrectly was when I was knitting! I sat down to knit with about 7000 steps and after a while my fitbit was alerting me that I had hit my 10000 step goal for the day! Have you found this to be true? Thanks for the post! I love doing the challenges with people too!

I like my fitbit, but have gotten out of the “habit” of wearing it. It really bugged my wrist — the plastic felt sweaty, and I’d want to take it off and then had to convince myself to put it on again…
I’m wondering if maybe a non-plastic strap would work better for me?
Thanks for the update and I’m thrilled it’s working for you!

It’s also so interesting to read how others use or don’t use the fitbit. Great conversation starter!

I am in a slightly different situation than most of your other comments. I have been retired for 6 years and had slowly become very sedentary. I felt my fitness level dropping and live in a rural area with no access to exercise facilities. I bought my fitbit in September of last year and find it very motivating. It works well with my competitive side. I never don’t wear it and compete with myself to do a minimum of 10,000 steps a day. I also set the stove timer to make sure I get up and move at least every half hour. Research has found this to be very important to maintaining good health. I am inclined to loose track of time when on the computer or reading both of which I love to do. I have also lost over 20 lbs. using my fitbit and weight watchers and feel so much better. My next step is to slowly add other forms of exercise. I would definitely recommend a fitbit for other retirees who have lost their motivation. P.S. I have never had any technical problems and have it hooked up with weight watchers as well.

good question! It definitely still gives you steps as you push the stroller BUT I found that if I walk up the hill near our house pushing the stroller it gives me LESS active minutes than if I walk up the same hill next to Paul who is pushing the stroller. So it’s almost like you get more “credit” for actively swinging your arms. This annoys me!! So (because I’m crazy) I will push the stroller with my right hand most of the time and let my left arm swing. 🙂

Cool! I’ve been thinking about getting one – I love using apps to give me all the statistics for when I run – I spend about 30 minutes after every run analyzing all the stats haha so I think I would like this. My question is – does your fitbit have the sleep/alarm function and do you use that? And also – how did you decide which kind of fitbit to get – there are so many! Have you done much research on the different kinds – do you wish you had a different kind ever?

I got my fitbit a few weeks ago for a 1000 mile challenge I am doing with my mom and sister and I didn’t consider myself a “walker” at all! I used to sigh and roll my eyes when my family always wanted to go for a walk after dinner! Now I am so excited when I get what I call the LIGHTSHOW at 10,000 steps that I have started walking to work somedays and even caught myself pacing my house while I massaged my kale salad last week!!! 🙂 Thanks for being one of my motivations to give it a try!

I don’t have a fitbit but my Samsung galaxy S5 has a program that measure steps, which is awesome except for when I drive the tractor, and sit on my butt all day, and still manage to exceed the 10,000 steps a day. Thinking riding in the tractor doing field work is a tadbit bumpy. That and riding horse, I use it to measure how far I’ve ridden, usually it’s normal for me to ride 5 miles in 2 hrs.

im not going to lie im super lazy! so when i can actually get to the 10,000 steps im super excited about it. and its true, seeing that you are only 2,000 steps away from your goal is a huge push! its crazy how this little thing has motivated me.
people ask me why i bother but its whatever works for you! and i do have the app on my s5 but i dont always carry my phone with me so the fitbit is the perfect thing ever! and i love that its water proof.e
i LOVE my fitbit! and i think you were also a huge reason why i purchased one so thanks!!!
also, since you bought it on amazon, did you just contact Fitbit and then they asked for proof? or how does it work? because i got mine at Target and i think i got rid of my receipt.

I love the fitbit, i’ve walked 12,500 steps every day since Christmas! I got one for my bf thinking he would love it because he’s so goal oriented (gotta get my steps in), he loved it and got me one (totally a slacker) but honestly its made me better and I’m totally on the bandwagon, finally for once in my life keeping my goal. We’ve both committed and walk every day NO MATTER WHAT, NO EXCUSES. That works for us and sometimes you don’t even realize how much you walk, I think people get worried about the number but if you do a little throughout the day you can totally hit it. I walk 12,500 steps to get 5 miles, he walks 10k because he has a longer stride and I can’t let him beat me, haha. Seriously the best purchase ever. We love getting our steps in together. Some might think we’re crazy walking in parking lots before happy hour, lol or at Target when it rains. Horray for fitbit fitness. Thanks Elise.

My mom borrowed my brother’s Fitbit and she knits constantly – it was counting every stitch she made, thus giving her inaccurate numbers since she wasn’t walking while knitting.
I love the Fitbit because it’s a reminder to take the stairs. One of my goals this summer is to get in better shape. I work on the 5th floor of the library at the university I attend. If I enter on the second floor, it’s 83 steps up and I sound like I’m dying at the end of it. Horrible.
