So, technically, I am dropping this wardrobe into the rotation a little early. My winter wardrobe was supposed to go from January to March. But two weekends ago, I looked in my closet and wanted to cry over the amount of black shirts hanging in there…staring at me. It was making me sad to even think about getting dressed, which is the very opposite of what this capsule wardrobe plan is supposed to be about.

I reminded myself that I (not the calendar, not the Internet) am in charge and swapped things out last week. I'm excited to share today my very slimmed down (just 30 pieces!) wardrobe that's my least neutral yet (which isn't saying much).

Two of the new tees here were birthday gifts and I bought just a few things this time around…

  • a pair of dressier tan sandals
  • a gray tee shirt dress
  • a loose fitting floral dress
  • a pair of patterned comfy pants

Reminders : my daily life is SUPER causal and so my wardrobe reflects that. This project is not about who can wear the fewest items or spend the least or the most. This project is a million different things to a million different people. For me it's about clearing some room in my closet and therefore in my head. It's about looking forward to getting dressed and feeling like my clothing options reflect who I am.

Springtopsanddresses

TOPS & DRESSES : xoxo tee*, pink plaid button up I have had since college (similar), floral dress* (purchased in store at Target, no online link), loose-fitting white dress from madewell last summer (similar), white "workshirt" (similar), madewell v-neck, casual white tank, dressy white tank, denim romper (similar), light chambray button-up (similar), chambray shirtdress (similar), denim vest, madewell v-neck, gray t-shirt dress*, gray cardigan (similar), american apparel v-neck, lightweight sweatshirt tee (similar), hustle tee.

Once the weather starts to warm up all I want to wear are shorts with tees and dresses that don't cling too much. I also just crave more light colors. And some chambray, apparently. Remember anything marked with an * was purchased new for this capsule.

Springbottomsandshoes

BOTTOMS & SHOES : patterned pants*, patterned maxi (from old navy last spring), brown shorts, green shorts (similar), denim cut-offs (similar, or do what I did and cut an old pair of jeans), jcrew toothpick jeans, longer gray khaki shorts (similar), rainbows, white sandals (similar), tan sandals*, gold sandals, leopard print slip-ons (same style, different pattern).

Most of these shorts I have had for ages so it was just a few purchases in this section. Those patterned pants feel a bit like the wildcard this season, but they are oddly flattering and I'm hopeful I'll wear them often. A whole lot of sandal options which I hope means I slip out of the default rainbow on occasion. And those leopard slip-ons from my fall capsule are still going strong. Probably one of my best buys. I'm shocked at how comfortable they are.

And that's it! Only 30 pieces because that's what felt right last week. I'm curious to see how I'm feeling in about six weeks, but right now I am grateful for the simple reminder that I get to make the rules and that when something feels broken, it's okay to fix it.

I’m loving a ton of your spring choices! Especially the denim romper and gray dress.

Love your style! The denim romper is not something I would normally pick myself, but now I’m a bit inspired. Thanks for sharing! Now, if you could just share some of that warm, sunny weather that would be great!

I keep saying I’ll do this, keep thinking I actually really do this without meaning to (meaning I don’t wear most of my clothes), and then … life. And even with my last few weeks of teaching practicums in the mix, and even when I’m actually teaching in a classroom (soon, hopefully!) every day, I think this is something that’s do-able.
Might be time to take a look at my closet again…. Thanks for the push! I’m pretty sure it’s all those spring colors and shorts that are doing it!

Love this wardrobe. I live a block away from a Target – which is both very convenient and very dangerous – so I may have to stop by and see if they have that great dress!

I’m not quite ready to financially invest in capsule wardrobes (mostly because I’d have to start entirely from scratch), but I did pick up a few new “spring” tops for work and play recently and man – so crazy how a few new items of clothing can change your entire mood and outlook for the better!
Digging those denim cutoffs (they look like the perfect length, fit and level of worn-in-comfortableness), and that plaid I’ve-had-since-college button up and AA v-neck are ON POINT. LOVE.

I love your style! I’m attempting a capsule wardrobe as well…and 75% of the time I wear scrubs but my weekend/everyday style is similar to yours – casual and yet I still want to feel cute. I’m going to check out that t-shirt dress for sure.

I started a doing capsule wardrobes this past fall 2014 and so the spring/ summer will be my third. I am a year out of college and on a budget and wanted to encourage you that it is so possible to do a capsule wardrobe without large finances. I just started with what I had, cut out what I knew I def wouldn’t wear/ what didn’t fit my style, and then added a few items that were necessities. You can do it! πŸ™‚

I’m aching for my warm weather capsule right now! Living in MI, I opted this season to start doing a 2 capsule system with a Spring/ Summer and Fall/Winter weather capsule. I am still in the cold winter capsule until mid-late April thanks to mother nature. So jealous of your Cali weather right now!

I have been wanting to do this for a year or so, probably since the first time YOU posted about it. You make it feel so simple, and doable. Not only that, but you make me feel like I want to clear out the clutter in my closet, which is rare – so I just might. Thanks!

I love seeing your capsules even though we have very different styles and lifestyles! this is my first not pregnant so it’s a bit more challenging (more to cut down) and super exciting. thanks for linking the old navy slip on sandals. I’ve been wanting a simple pair like those! xo

I’ve been watching you and others do this a couple seasons, and basically only wear this same amount of pieces every day too. Lots of work shirts, chambray, and v necks. Mom uniform. But my closet is bursting at the seams, plus boxes of clothes in the garage that need sorting and mostly disposing. I worked as a retail buyer for years and have so much left over from that time. It’s a monumental project I don’t know when I’ll have the time to tackle. I think you’ve mentioned before, but I’m curious what you do with the off-season pieces. Just put them in a labeled bin in the garage? I so want to pare down my clothing space.

Labeled bins! I go through them every season change and get rid of more. It gets way easier to de clutter the more you do it! You can! πŸ™‚

Yes! Thanks for sharing Karli Jo! It’s free to get ride of stuff you don’t wear and sometimes that can help get things moving. πŸ™‚ good luck Kelsey!

I’m curious what size you got in the grey Old Navy T-shift dress. I’m eyeing the stripped version but the reviews are all over the place in terms of sizing. Thanks for sharing!!

Can’t wait to put mine together for the first time!
For my fill in pieces, I’m looking for a maxi dress, a pair of army green cargo shorts (similar to yours!), new metallic sandals since mine are all beat to hell, and another J Crew checked lightweight perfect shirt.

I’ve never considered doing a capsule before, because I feel like I don’t have that many clothes, and the weather in Kansas changes a ton. But I’m pregnant for the first time, and Spring is here, and it’s depressing to have all these clothes in my wardrobe that don’t fit. Thanks for the inspiration to box up what I’m not wearing, hopefully it makes getting ready easier this season.

I changed my wardrobe up this weekend too. Since I live in a totally different climate I have a cool spring, warm spring/summer, early fall and late fall/winter. I don’t worry about the calendar. Also I never include coats or shoes.. If it is snowing in March like 2 years ago I wear a warm coat and and boots it it is 70 like this year I wear cute flats and a light jacket. Even with my work clothes and casual clothes my closet is so much better.

I’m so envious that this is a Spring wardrobe, I’m still wearing long johns, three layers of shirts, thick socks and UGG boots!!!LOL!!! On a daily basis, I try to convince my husband to sell the family business and move south!!!
