our favorite San Diego spots
photos, clockwise from top left: waterfront, SD zoo, Bird Rock Coffee, El Camino, Urban Solace, Snooze, Prep Kitchen, Exotic Gardens, Dark Horse Coffee. (We only take photos of Ellerie drinking from a straw, BTW.)

I have avoided writing this post because I felt like we've spent such a short time here and we tend to go to the same few places. But after enough requests for recommendations, I thought I'd share our favorites. This is in no way an all-inclusive list, but these are the spots that Paul and I (and Ellerie) have gone to, continue to go to and enjoy.

These places are all south of the 8 freeway (in the greater downtown area). We lived in Little Italy for a year (2010-2011) and now that we live north a bit, we still find ourselves heading back that way most often unless we're going to our neighborhood place (which has great beer, is very kid-friendly and in walking distance from our house #holygrail).

FOR DINNER

Seersucker – this is our only Gaslamp area restaurant because we don't go down there often (it's a fun area but it's hard to park, very crowded, etc.) We went for our first anniversary and I went recently with a bachelorette group. Both times it was good.

El Camino – home of the Instagram famous Hola sign. This is our favorite (fairly Californian) Mexican restaurant. If you want authentic Mexican, there are dozens of little taco shops to be found.

D-Bar – very kiddo friendly (though we take Ellerie to most of these places). Super light and pretty with a fun menu and tons of great desserts. Ellerie loves the music they play here.

Craft & Commerce – super hipster (just look at that website)…great cocktails and fun food pairings. Get the corndogs and fried pickles.

Prep Kitchen – this is a bit fancier than the others, though still hipster (that's sort of our jam). Get the bacon wrapped dates. And we love the steak tartare.

Tractor Room – Great food although portions are huge. Like enough to feed a family…for a week. The cocktails are great.

100 Wines – I'm not sure how we found ourselves here, but it's a fun spot. Again, hipster-ish menu and obviously lots of wine. Fun little outdoor patio. This is a good place to share a bunch of small plates. We all (even Ellerie) love the Brussels sprouts and crispy cauliflower.

FOR LUNCH

Burger Lounge – this is a chain but serves great burgers. I'm not a vegetarian but I get the veggie burger every time because it's so excellent

Urban Solace – we've actually gone here for dinner a few times, but Paul's gone during lunch and said it was great. The duck macaroni is awesome.

FOR BREAKFAST/BRUNCH

Influx – great quick breakfast spot and the lattes are good. They have free wi-fi (ask for the password at the counter) and I like to work here some mornings or while I'm waiting for my film to be developed across the street.

Snooze – crowded on the weekends, but we went early on a weekday and had no issue. Great eggs benedict options and cute diner look.

Donut Bar – always a line, but worth checking out just for the novelty of eating absurd donuts (like butterbeer!)

FOR COFFEE

Dark Horse – killer pour over. Beans are in-house roasted. We usually get the Ethiopian or Kenyan beans, depending on what they have.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters – is another local coffee roaster and they just opened a new location in Little Italy. It's beautiful. Amazing pour over. If you're not into black coffee, get the cappuccino. It's the best we've ever had.

FOR BOOZE

Waterfront – Yes, it's a hole-in-the-wall/dive bar. Yes, the bathrooms are gross. But the bar food is good and the beer is better. This was our absolute favorite place when we lived in Little Italy.

Stone Liberty Station – there are a lot of great breweries in the area, but this is one of our favorites.

And really, every restaurant we recommend serves great drinks. San Diego is a beer town and if you like IPAs you're in luck.

FOR DESSERT

Pappalecco – the gelato is amazing. Coffee and pastries are great too.

FOR FUN STUFF TO BUY

(this section is incredibly skimpy, I haven't had as much time as I'd like to wander fun little shops and boutiques, but these are a few of the highlights from the top of my head. Please yelp whatever area you're in to find more little shops!)

Blick Art Supplies – huge art supply store.

Vocabulary – I have found unique and cute dresses/tops here. Super well curated, boutique prices.

Love and Aesthetics – such a cool little gift shop, great (but small) card selection.

Pigment – super cute stuff, everything from kiddo toys, to paper to plants. I could spend a day here.

FOR TREASURE HUNTING

Architectural Salvage – there is not much I would actually buy here, but it's fun to look around

Exotic Gardens – my favorite succulent shop

this blog post from two years ago includes some of my favorite vintage shops. These stores are NOT Goodwill prices, but are super fun to look around.

FOR KIDDOS

I get asked a lot about what's fun stuff to do with kids and I never know what to say because we just bring Ellerie on our adventures. We take her on a lot of walks. There is a park near our house that she runs around at. Other than that, I'm not much help except for…

San Diego Zoo – going to the zoo here is like going to Disneyland (meaning it's as aweome as Disneyland) and costs just about as much. EDIT – I just learned it's only half the cost to go to the zoo vs. Disney for a day. And we do LOVE the zoo but…it's hard for me to recommend it because for us it's an easy jaunt and since we have season passes I don't feel bad when we leave after just an hour and a few exhibits. You know your kids and if this would be an activity they'd like.

And seriously? The reality? We like to stay home a lot.

First, the zoo is about half the cost of one day at Disneyland.
I traveled to San Diego this past summer and the zoo was the highlight. I wasn’t with any kids but its the best zoo I’ve been to and the one thing I think anyone traveling to San Diego has to do.

A few years ago a friend and I traveled to San Diego. We made sure to make a stop at Pappalecco on a recommendation of yours. It was uh-mazing. We only had the gelato, but it was stellar.
We also went to the zoo. It is the best one we’ve been too (and we’ve been to a lot) and we still talk about it to this day almost two years later.

I adored Urban Solace. Great food every time I ate there. I still follow them on Facebook, even though I’ve moved across country. From 0-3 the zoo and Safari park were our absolute go-to’s. I lived in Oceanside, so both parks were equidistant. Legoland is the best amusement park for the 4-7 range. Far more affordable than Disneyland, small and walkable, shorter lines, and plenty of rides for even the youngest kids. Rides on the Coaster and the Trolley are also big hits with the preschool set.

Love how Paul and Ellerie feature in the photos. I recently realized I have a ton of photos of my boyfriend eating at restaurants… he’s like a backdrop for the food.
I spent a quick half-day in San Diego when I was in southern California over Christmas – enough to visit Balboa Park and get a bite to eat. I’d love to head back sometime and try out some of these recommendations!

Oh, thank you so much for this post! I’m only 5 months new to the area and am on the hunt for great spots to visit. I ate at Urban Solace recently and adored it. Also, I waited in line for an hour and a half one Sunday morning at Snooze and loved their food as well! Pigment is great. I’ve taken two of their workshops and am just in love with everything that store has to offer.
Have you been to Coffee & Tea Collective? I’ve been finding myself there lots and lots recently. Thank you so much for this list, I’m going to have to try more of your favorite places!

Thanks for the recommendations! I don’t live in the area but have saved the page in my Evernote for when I do get to visit :). That picture of Paul and Ellerie is so precious! Also love how he’s helping her drink in most of the pictures in the larger image collage!

Pinning!!! Was in SD for the first time this past November and did my own little (BIG) caffeine crawl. Hit Dark Horse and Bird Rock (and many others), but will definitely be going back. Love the other ideas as we will be there for a week+ in July/August for my brother’s wedding. Can’t wait to check some of these places out.

Oh, I’m so glad you listed your favorite restaurants and such! I’m a little north of you in Murrieta, and we have our go-tos when we are down your way, but I’m always looking for more!
If you’re into beer, there’s a thriving craft brew movement in Temecula and Murrieta. I recommend Black Market, Garage and Aftershock. Ironfire is good, too, and some people like Refuge (not my favorite but different strokes). Garage is probably most kid-friendly, as it also houses a Pieology-style pizza restaurant.
Plus, there’s awesome wine tasting in Temecula, too. 🙂

Unrelated: Have you ever had lunch or met for coffee with one of your readers/blog pals while they were visiting San Diego? You’re so lovely! I think we all wish we could meet you 🙂

Great picks! As a fellow San Diegan I approve this message. Just stumbled across your blog from BlogLovin and I will definitely become a follower. The blog world needs more San Diego presence! If you’ve never gone to Great Maple for brunch you need to! But if it’s a weekend, make a reservation! 😀

Thanks for the recommendations! Have you been to the Station in south park? Very kid friendly! Also if you love brussel sprouts then hopefully you have tried the ones at Bo Beau!! They are the best I have ever had! The trick with that place is to call ahead an hour before you want to go because they don’t take reservations.

The Blue Water Seafood Market and Grill is delish!! Hodad’s is fun and the burgers totally rock – worth waiting in line for and the Ocean Beach PIer Cafe rocks the breakfast. And Balboa Park – next to the zoo is very lovely – their photography museum is amazing. I adore San Diego – one of my top ten favorite 20 cities. LOL. It was so easy to learn the transit system and I was so proud of myself to get anywhere I wanted by myself.

I second all of these places! Urban Solace has the most amazing Blue’s brunch on Sundays, too. If you love it for dinner you’ll dig the live music and brunch menu (our girls just get up out of their seats and boogie with the band). Burger Lounge is a block away from us in Kensington and the veggie burger is by far THE BEST. Also, have you checked out the new Home Mercantile (vintage handmade hipster style home goods, accessories) next to Bottle Craft and Pigment? Really awesome, you’d love it. Check out Station Tavern in Southpark for a very kid-friendly (there’s even a play area outdoors) and yummy/good vibes bar and upscale burger place.

Love this list. I’m up in north county, so I only know what’s up here, and even still, I feel like I’m still discovering lots of places. we started going down to san diego more after getting bored up here. but hello, little italy and north park are the best for hipster restaurants. I like your taste, Elise.

Hi Elise! We’re big fans of weekend brunch at Urban Solace! Live music on the patio and the food is to die. My husband is a Navy pilot, and we met while he was stationed in San Diego yeeeears ago. We lived in the La Jolla / UTC area, so did a lot of LJ and PB and stuff back then. But our lately-fave (when we get down to visit) is The Mission (any of them). Also love Fig Tree Cafe in PB for something more ‘locals only,’ if you know what I mean 😉 Sigh. We’ve since lived in Lemoore and Fallon – enjoy San Diego while it lasts, which I hope is many years!

So this is going to be a very random post. I’m 20 weeks pregnant and haven’t had a glass of wine in many, many, MANY months. I used to drink a glass most evenings. I have not missed it, or craved it, since being pregnant. Until… I saw that last pic of your hubby drinking a glass. Now I want a glass of wine. Do you happen to have any NA recommendations!?

I am old school San Diego. We love Balboa Park for family days. For kids, this is the end of the season for the tide pools. The last good month for the season is February. Hiking in Torrey Pines is good too. For authentic Mexican, it depends on what regional food you are looking for. Not all tacos shops are created equal. Many have one thing that they make best. Cross the border and eat some street tacos as they are better than anything you will find in San Diego. My favorite place is my grandma’s house. Best Mexican in town. Try El Agave in south old town for some good Mole dishes. Jimmy Carter’s in Hillcrest for some good salsas for enchiladas and other things. There are a ton of super good Asian restaurants on Convoy. It is full of them. Every type from Japanese to Korean. Raki Raki has fantastic Ramen. The chicken is better than the pork here. For pork Ramen, try Ramen Yamadaya. Tasty. There are lots of good little Korean and Japanese places for lunch tucked away here. I don’t know the names but just know where they are. I love the Bison Burger and Lamb Burger at Burger Lounge. Babbette Swartz in Hillcrest is fun for cards. For sushi, Kaito in Encinitas is better than Sushi Ota. It’s not cheap but tasty. And not a roll type of place. The fish market is pretty good for fresh fish. I could go on but I think I’ve gone on long enough…

I could not pass up reading this post. My husband and I went to San Diego when I was pregnant with our first. We knew we would not be traveling much after kiddos, so we splurged by going on a quick trip. San Diego has a special place in my heart. 🙂
The highlight of any vacation for me tends to be going out for breakfast. We went to Richard Walkers (twice) on our short trip out there. I would highly recommend!

Have you guys taken a day to “do” Coronado Island? I am absolutely IN LOVE with the Miguel’s special omlette at Miguelito’s (not Miguels) at the corner of the El Cordova across from the Del. Also, the library. THE LIBRARY! I consider becoming a card holder and driving from Irvine regularly for those two things every time we are there. Then I hit the checkpoint while driving home and reconsider :)Early morning hunt for sand dollars is also ah-may-zing!

Hi! Great restaurants on your list! We are East Coasters w a 2yr old, and my husbands company headquarters is in San Diego. We spent a week last December exploring La Jolla. I noticed your blog post is on the older side, do you have any suggestions of places to see with a 2 yr old? Specifically great beaches, must see neighborhoods, or not expensive restaurants to try for lunch. Thanks!
