book report

I've got a good variety of books to share with you today AND, as a bonus, today's Elise Gets Crafty podcast episode features author Katherine Reay. We're chatting about her creative process for writing fiction. This is something I am so interested in because I love to read novels but I know writing one is something I'll probably never do. It was so fun to chat with Katherine and I hope you'll listen by streaming here or using your favorite podcast app.

And one more thing, I get a lot of questions about when I read. 85% of the time it's in bed before I fall asleep, but sometimes it's in the evenings after Ellerie's asleep and Paul and I have already watched an episode of TV. I am also trying to take Friday's off from work and reading (or napping) on the couch during Ellerie's nap. Switching back to real (library) books instead of ebooks on my iPad has been a HUGE help. I can't click away to "just check Instagram really quick a.k.a. find myself involved in a teenage saga about a youtube star." I also think I fall asleep faster because my eyes aren't thrown off right before bed due to that bright screen.

Those are just small things but the point is reading is a huge priority for me – it helps me feel like me – and so I fit it into my schedule.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty / this was the second book I read by this author and my favorite of the two. It was set up as a (fairly) light-hearted murder mystery which is an interesting pairing, I know. I loved the way it was told and the casual suspense that built throughout. I think I've said this before, but I tend to enjoy stories told from various points of view and this was especially well done.

Lizzy & Jane by Katherine Reay / this is the story of two estranged sisters, both who are going through different but real challenges. I loved their relationship; it felt just complex and just real enough and I enjoyed the detail given about both their situations. There were so many food, scent and literary references included throughout the book and I always appreciate that because it makes me feel like I'm learning something from fiction. The business idea that comes out from the two sisters' troubles is genius and I hope it's a real concept (I should have asked Katherine about that!)

Being Mortal by Atul Gawande / this was the heaviest book I've read in a long time. Since Paul and I first started dating, and he read Complications, I have read all of Gawande's books and each one opens my eyes and changes my life. Somehow Gawande takes the most complex medical and human issues and breaks them down in a way that is accessible and relatable. I couldn't put this book down, though it was a hard and sometimes very sad read. In the middle I struggled because the weight of our current challenge (the baby-boomers nearing "old age") is something we (and by "we" I mean: society, me, my parents) are not prepared for. What, I wondered, could we really DO about that? There are suggestions and answers though and while it's murky, I felt like the ending shared promise and felt uplifting. Many discussions were spurred by this book. Important, valuable discussions.

I'm currently reading I'll Give You The Sun and I have a decent stack of books on my nightstand after that. What about you? Anything interesting to kick off the new year? Anyone have any reading goals? My reading goal is to never bring my iPad/iPhone to bed and instead read a book.

I’ve been reading Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri. It’s a collection of 8 short stories. I’m about halfway through and they are so great. I fully recommend it!

I always fall asleep better reading ‘books’ rather than a screen. I also feel I get a better sleep – but maybe that is just me relaxing and switching off more, rather than getting 100 ideas of things I want to do/make/cook before going to sleep. Thanks so much for sharing.

I can’t read in my tablet, too many distractions. However I have a Kindle Paperwhite and 90% of what I read is on it. Its internet is so horrible that I don’t even remember I can surf the web using it. Currently I’m reading Please Look After Mom by a Korean author. So far I’m enjoying it.
My reading goal this year is 35 books. I already read 5, but I start in a new job next week, not sure how my life will be…

Great round up – definitely adding those to my to read list. I’ve just finished The Story of You by Katy Regan. I’d never heard of the author before so wasn’t sure what to expect. I really really enjoyed it, it’s about two teenagers who meet each other again after 16 years. I really warmed to the characters (and that always makes me think it’s been a good read) and it’s a great story about ‘letting things go’ 🙂

I love the comment that reading makes you feel like yourself- I feel like the same is true for me too, but I’ve gotten out of the habit of reading before bed. One of my resolutions for 2015 is to bring that back. My Metro rides aren’t long enough to read more than a few pages at a time!

I love your book reviews, Elise. I have totally let reading fall by the wayside over the last few years, but this year, I am making a concerted effort to read, as I am so sick of my habit of skimming through things on my phone that just don’t constitute real reading, and feel desperately in need of engaging my brain a bit more!
I am currently reading Burial Rites by Hannah Kent and Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth – such a fascinating insight into how midwifery used to be in England (I am British), and how incredibly hardy & strong the women had to be back then in the 1950’s.

I switched from ebooks back to library books too both for the help sleeping but also because I realized my 5 and 7 year olds were never seeing me “read” so how could I model a love of reading to them if all they ever saw was mommy on her iPad. To them, they see no difference between me reading a book on a screen and playing games/checking Instagram/catching up on celebrity gossip. The first time my daughter actually saw me halfway through a 500 page book she was shocked: “Mommy! I had no idea people could read so many pages!” And I knew the switch was a smart move.

Good morning – I am reading Lizzy & Jane after seeing it in one of your photos. I LOVE it and can’t wait to finish reading! So I was more than a little excited this morning when Katherine Reay was a guest on your podcast 🙂 Reading Lizzy & Jane has me wanting to read Jane Austen again. I plan on reading Emma next, and then Dear Mr Knightley. Thanks for sharing!

I’m currently reading ‘All The Light WE cannot See’ which I’m having a hard time slogging through even though it’s been recommended by a million bloggers etc. I’m wondering if it’s because it’s on my ipad. hmmmm. You got me thinking about the screen vs. paper piece of my reading.
I read ‘unbroken’ over the holidays and LOVED it. Flew through it and was fascinated by the story as it’s true. planning to see the movie soon.
My reading goal this year is 52 books- I’m cheating a little because I started counting the books I read over the holidays because I had so much free time! I’m on #6 right now.

I really dislike “digital” reading. I spend all day on a computer at work and really can’t fall asleep after looking at a screen. I, too, never just read the book on my iPad, I end up on Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook and then probably back to Instagram. It’s terrible! Plus, nothing beats the smell of a book!

I love reading and I definitely do most of it on my tablet but my husband recently showed me a study that says the light from the e-reader can affect your sleep, so I’ve switched to real books before bed. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/12/22/e-books-may-interfere-with-sleep/?_r=0

There have been studies done that reading on electronic devices is bad for sleep, although the opposite has been said for TV – it’s not inherently bad and if you need it to sleep, you should use it.
Book Recs: Neverhome by Laird Hunt; The Ghosts of Heaven by Marcus Sedgewick; Passionate Nutrition by Jennifer Adler.
I quit taking my phone to bed a few months ago. I’m not sleeping any better, but I am sleeping more. I don’t wake up as often during the night, and when I do, I fall right back to sleep. I use a regular alarm clock to wake up in the morning.

I love that your read so much! One of my goals this year is to start reading more often. I used to be a voracious reader, but then, you know, life happened (namely kids). I’m using your tracker to help me track my reading. I’m aiming for at least 15 minutes a day. And it definitely has to be a physical book otherwise I’ll be in way too deep a celebrity’s Instagram. I have a never-ending, always growing reading list, so no big 2015 goals related to reading except to keep plugging away at my list. I am almost done with Gone Girl, but next up is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I watched season 1 of the Starz series and, while I hated the crude language and, in my opinion, very unnecessary nudity, the plot/ story is so good! Hopefully the book proves to be jsut as great if not better than the show. She has 8 books out in this series and I have heard she isn’t finished!

I just finished reading the ‘Storied life of A.J. Fikry’ and I loved it. I love any book that makes references to other literature. It was entertaining and somehow light even while dealing with heavy subjects. Right now I am reading ‘Serena’ which will soon be a movie. It is set in the 1930’s I believe, and is very descriptive and suspenseful so far…
BTW- I love when you do ‘book reports’ it’s always nice to see what real people are reading and enjoying.

I purposely got an old school kindle. It has no back light, and no internet except for connecting to the kindle store. That way I can still save money on cheaper ebooks, without it hurting my eyes or distracting me. I also hike and camp a lot, so it’s really nice to not have to lug 5 books into the woods, since they all store so nicely on my kindle, plus the battery will last for a week or more even with heavy reading.

I just finished two shorter books. Albert Camus’s “The Stranger” which I absolutely loved! The book is so brilliantly written. It might not be for everyone as the character is not particularly likeable and it ends and touches on rather depressing thoughts but there’s so much packed into a little book. I also just read a comic/graphic novel called Civil War by Mark Millar which poses the question: should superheros be registered with the US Government? and shows the superheros get into a civil war about the issue. It’s an interesting idea but I felt neither side was truly convincing and that it could have gone way deeper. But for fans who are really into the superhero world, seeing all the Marvel heroes would probably be fun for them.
My reading goal is 20 books for the year. I tried to do that last year and got to 16. Next I have a couple of books by Dr. Gabor Mate called “In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts” and “When the Body Says No”. Also on the docket (for the next couple of months) is the fifth Game of Thrones book, David Allen’s Getting Things Done (have read countless articles on it but not the actual book), Margaret Atwood’s “The Penelopiad”. And I’ll probably read whatever my boyfriend reads because we like to discuss books like we’re in a book-club but with two people. (ie a conversation??)

I like that you answered the question of when you read. I love reading and so many people I know say they want to read but don’t have the time (yet, like many of us, they have the time to creep on Instagram or watch endless episodes of a show on Netflix). You’re one of the examples that if you really do want to read, no matter how busy your life is, you’ll make the time. As you said, it’s a priority. I agree that physical books help. Luckily, I’ve only used my Kindle Fire for books. I have a couple of apps on there, but I’ve stuck with it as an eReader. If I had an iPad, I know it would be a different story. I grew up reading, since I didn’t have a computer or iPhone to turn to. I like the unplugging and I think that it’s something we can all use once in a while!
Also, I’m so excited to hear that you liked Big Little Lies because I bought it for my Kindle for $1 and am looking forward to reading it!

Hi Elise, I used to have a very strict rule of no iphone next to my bed because FB drama = restless sleep until I got my Fitbit.
For some reason if I Begin Sleep by tapping the fitbit, it messes up the app and I’ve had to reload it to get all my data back. But if I tap the Begin Sleep from the Fitbit app, I’m good.
So now I’m sleeping with the phone next to me again.
Do you have this problem with the Fitbit?

I’ll have to look up Lizzy & Jane, sounds great! I have an e-reader but hardly use it now, it was an early model and is hard to upload books onto. My house is full of hard copy books and whilst it makes moving hard, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I just finished ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’ by Richard Flanagan, which I would highly recommend. It’s written in a way that draws you in, and although the subject matter is pretty heavy, it is at the same time a delicate and beautifully crafted story.
I’m now half way through ‘The Little Stranger’ by Sarah Waters – I’m not enjoying it as much as ‘The Night Watch’, but it’s still a great mystery.
    Happy reading!

First of all, OMG so much hair! So fun to watch your sweet girl grow. Secondly, I have also recently decided to start reading in bed before I fall asleep most nights. I don’t have kids yet but I am working and in grad school which previously has felt like it translated to “no time to read for fun,” but then I remembered that I often scroll through instagram instead of sleeping when I first get into bed anyway, which for sure is terrible for my sleep (and mental) health. With that as motivation I headed to the library, and I just finished “A Tale For The Time Being” which I LOVED. Highly recommended.

I’m currently re-reading Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels. It’s a poetic novel which I first read about 5 years ago, and I just love it. I’m no good at book reviews, but what wikipedia has to say it pretty much sums it up for me, too: The novel explores themes of trauma, grief, loss, and memory, as well as discovery both personal and scientific. So, yeah. Hard, and sad, and wonderfully written. I know hardly any of the books you’ve read, so I have no idea if you’re into this kind of story, but to me it’s a great piece of literature.
My goal is simple: Read again. (A new proper light next to my side of the bed helps! :))

How fun to read this, thanks for sharing what your reading and when you read. I don’t read too many books, mostly magazines but this year I’ve decided to get back into books again. I love actual books in my hands to read, no electronics for me although they are fun and easy to bring anywhere. I have to admit if I sit and get cozy for too long I fall asleep, that’s why I stick to magazines and reading them while I eat lunch. Going to break the habit though and start reading a book at lunch and giving myself time to read this year. I am hoping for 15, just read my first one yesterday, couldn’t put it down and kept me awake all day. Now I can’t wait to start the next one.
