kiddo yearly journaling idea

Over the years I have shared many a memory keeping method on the blog. Traditional scrapbooking, minibooks, Project Life, bound photo books, art journals, framed collages, photo albums…even this blog is a memory keeping method. I LOVE photos. I LOVE words. I love taking photos and writing words and then looking back and reading through.

I've noticed a shift these past few months though and right now I am not as interested in spending the time putting the words and photos both together in an album. There is always a season for my hobbies and so I don't doubt I'll be back at some form of paper memory keeping eventually, but right now I am excited to change things up for 2015.

IMG_5143

I am going to keep taking all the photos (on film, DSLR and iPhone) but I am going to be doing my "journaling" about Ellerie in a small bound book. I had it made through Pinhole Press. It's actually designed to be a guest book (like for a wedding or home) but with a few alterations it became an "I want to remember…" journal for my girl.

I want to remember custom journal

I added a collage of recent film photos to the first few pages (you get to add 3 pages of photos to the front) and then had "I WANT TO REMEMBER" printed at the top of every page. I want to remember is an easy journaling prompt that I have used many times. (Most recently two weekends ago.)

I want to remember custom journal

I went with a guest book instead of a journal because I liked the horizontal format and I figured it would be easier to write in. I plan on keeping it by my bed and keeping track of Ellerie habits, words and antics throughout the year. I won't write everyday. I won't try to fill a page. I won't worry about if the pen bleeds through the paper (it won't though, the stock is beautiful). I won't worry about miss-spellings or keeping the book precious.

I want to remember custom journal

Paul and I have been keeping a running list of Ellerie words on our fridge on just a scrap piece of paper and it was one of my favorite documentation methods this year. This is sort of an extension of that and something I can do without needing much time, storage or supplies.

Of course, I could have just bought a spiral notebook and did this exact same thing. I also could have bought a fun book like this or this. Having a custom book is far from the point (thought it does make me absurdly happy to see).

IMG_5146

So what's my photo plan? Ellerie's 4×6 film photos are going into a photo album and are being marked with just the month and year in pencil. I don't have a real digital photo plan other than to take them and probably order a family photobook at the end of the year. I do have a plan to make a cool book about the MAKE29 adventure in early February. I am going to turn the E&e photo project into a book this summer as well.

So what's my personal documentation plan? How will I keep a record of our whole family? The answer is…we'll see what happens but I'm not worried about it. I have the blog for personal documentation. I have IG for all the photos. I did very little paper documentation about Paul and I in 2014 and I am not sad about it. Paul probably didn't even notice the drop-off. 😉 If I'm feeling like something is missing I will start back up and I imagine I'll be more interested in trying to document a week in our life this year.

I want to remember custom journal

I will not be sharing the journal entries but I do hope to check in next year year to let you know if this is working or if I feel like I made a mistake and my "documenting" is lacking. I'm so looking forward to shaking things up.

note : links used in this post are affiliate. I love Pinhole Press and highly recommend them. I was thrilled with the quality of this guestbook but did not receive it for free nor was I paid for this post. The photos you see behind the list of Ellerie words are magnets that I have printed every few months by Sticky9. If you want to make your own, use code FRIEND29D9 to save 15% (and I get credit too… win, win.)

Cool idea. I have a one line a day book and I love it, it’s really fun when the years start adding up and you can read back on what you did that day for the last 4 years.
Your posts make me really excited to have a baby. 🙂 Happy New Year.

Oh! Love these ideas for photo documentation this year! I am really into photo books and have made some from both artifact uprising and Blurb. I’ve done Project Life in the past, but just haven’t been feeling it lately. This year I did a combination of a written journal, keeping a folder of all the paper “stuff” you collect throughout the year, and in January I’m going to order the huge photo book that I put together of all of 2014. So excited to see it! Good luck with your memory-keeping this year; can’t wait to see how it turns out!

    Hi Elise,
I think I love this even more than project life. Awesome!
I notice that you always seem to have the same few people clicking around on your blog and commenting (I actually do not comment, maybe because I don’t have my own blog anymore – but I do read). One of my biggest problems when I had a blog was getting people to check it out. I was wondering if you ever click around and check out the blogs of your followers. Or do you not have the time to click around? Just curious 🙂

It’s so cool to see how your documentation style has evolved with your life and priorities and interests. It’s a good reminder that you don’t need to pick one kind of memory-keeping format and stick with it forever – it’s the overall body of work that’s cool to look back on.

Sometimes! But I find it’s much easier to click around and find new people on Instagram than through blogs! I think new folks find my blog through pinterest the most. Then I have to hope the design, content and archives keep them coming back! It’s a process. I’ve been at this for nine years!!

OMG this is SO similar to the plan I came up with to document each of my kids’ lives in 2015! A little different, but I think I’m going to mold this to fit in with the plan I already have brewing.
And using a guestbook?! SUCH a good idea. Thinking outside the box FTW.

Hi! Yes, Keeping weekend links for sure. No other changes. 🙂 I plan to have more craft DIYs after FEBRUARY when I launch my next bday project.
I posted just 11/312 posts in 2014 about memory keeping so to me this is not too different. 🙂

I have to admit though: I will miss your project life posts. I bought seaform edition a few months ago (when you let us know it was on sale on Amazon) and it’s my favorite thus far!
You keep talking about this new birthday project and it is making me SO anxious for February! xo

“I want to remember” is one of the best sentence out there when it comes to memory keeping.
I really like that new documenting style. It has a lot about a diary.

I did this when I was pregnant, and when my daughter was little…and when it dropped off, I began writing on birthdays and big milestone days. Planning to keep going until she’s pregnant with her first, maybe. Who knows…but it’s there and I write still- 13 years later!

I thought the same thing, I’m sorry that you’re no longer paper crafting / scrapbooking because you were (and still are, in different ways) one of my biggest inspirations.
That said, I am happy that you are, first and foremost, honest and don’t just create to be on teams or stuff like that. I know that your film photos + photobook posts + photo tips, will be an awesome source of inspiration.
    Thanks you Elise.

I love this idea. Journal entries are a great way to remember things, and this can even continue beyond 2015 if you like it and want it to.
I wouldn’t worry about it feeling lacking. You take tons of pictures and will be able to go back to fill in the gaps if you need to later. I don’t have kids (maybe one day), but my mom didn’t start scrapbooking until I was in middle school. After the fact I have photobooks all the way from birth to graduating high school.

i love this! i had a “one line a day” journal through paper coterie (they are no longer in business) and i loved it. i love looking back and reading through it. i do something different each year. last year i did a 365 project using the “1 second a day” app on my iPhone. i got two days left on it & i am excited to mash it up & see my year in review in less then 6 minutes. not sure if i will do it next year, but it was fun! happy new year!!

Can’t wait to hear how this works for you this year and hope we get peeks at your photo books that you have planned when you get done with them. My daughters are 10 and 19 now and I am seriously thinking of making bound books for special occasions. I just can’t keep up with the everyday of project life. I always have good intentions though! I read your blog everyday and have for years! Thanks for all the inspiration and I always look forward to see what is coming up!

Ill miss your PL pages. Though, I love your relax approach to life documenting. The book is beautiful, and Im sure at the end of the year it will be full of funny and lovely things. And it will be really funny to look at this lovely photos at the end, she will seem so little at them. Children grow up so fast.
I came to your blog because of Project life and I`m really interested in reasons why you got disappointed in system. I also have two-years-old and can’t think about more structured and detailed way of documenting her growing.
Thanks for the inspiration and I wish you good luck!

Thank you Elise! All this year I was determined to print some of the hundreds of photos I’ve taken. Did not happen. Not sure what that’s about. Sticky 9 to the rescue! I love the idea of magnets – you’re always going to have a fridge, right? I love that in one step, you get a printed version of your photos AND a way to display them. Thank you so much for sharing this great idea/ company and the discount! I’ve already ordered my first pack. And thanks also for the inspiration to record! I just decided that this year I will do a ‘one sentence a day’, type of journal. Gosh, I think I’m ‘shaking things up’! You’re awesome.

i love this idea. i’ve used the Day One app on my phone before to jot down quick notes about what joey is doing now, although i’ve fallen away from that lately. i like the idea of having a pretty book by your bed. i ditched project life for 2014 and just ordered a big photobook from blurb to cover the whole year. i can’t wait to see it! it’s a much easier (and cheaper!) method of documentation that fits my life a lot better right now. weirdly, i don’t even miss scrapbooking at all.

Love this! I have kept a journal of my kids’ ‘cute things’ as long as I’ve been a mama. I buy journals I love and keep them by my bed and when the fancy strikes me (or at least once a week) I try to write down the cute things they are doing/saying/learning these days. It has been one of my favourite things. Because photos can document how they look and what they’re doing, but somehow putting it all into words (and how I feel about it) is so much closer to my heart. I also agree that this is an easier/less stressful way to keep a record when you’re busy running after said child. If nothing else gets done, I know I’ll remember how my daughter rubs her blankie when she’s tired and says ‘fings’ for ‘things’ – and all the other precious stuff that I don’t want to forget. I love how you’ve put this book together, that makes it all the more meaningful.

What a beautiful way to document! I love the book! I think that in the end the words matter more than pictures and I am sure your girl will be very thankful one day that you took the time to write them down.
When my kids were little, I used to write little stories about them in my personal journal (very irregularly) and they so love it when I read the stories to them. I only wish I had written more…

I did this when my third baby came along. The first two are well scrapbooked but I just couldn’t juggle it all once she arrived. So she has photo albums with a diary. It worked well until she was 5. Then I just did one big project life album from there on out. Looking back now that she is 9 I love the little stories and memories that the scrapbook albums for the older two seemed to have lacked. Best wishes and happy new year!!
