candy cane cookies

I have shared this recipe before (at least twice) but it's been five years and I think I read somewhere (probably on Reddit) that you get to start recycling blog content every five years (false). These are really worth it though. They're so good. Almost good enough to make you not hate the hassle that is cleaning melted peppermint off your baking sheets.

candy cane cookies

Candy Cane Cookies – makes at least four dozen small cookies

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • tsp vanilla
  • tsp salt
  • 4 cups flour
  • tsp baking soda
  • 4 tablespoons oil
  • 12 candy canes, crushed
  • buttercream frosting (and optional red food coloring)

First, crush your candy canes. This is more tricky than it sounds. The best method I have found is to double ziplock bag the unwrapped canes and then hit them with a hammer or the bottom of a mug.

Pre-heat the oven to 350*F.

Blend together the butter and sugar. Add in and continue to blend eggs, vanilla and salt. Once that's well mixed, add in the flour and baking soda. Your dough will be fairly crumbly. Add in the oil and about 3/4 of the crushed candy canes.

Roll your dough into small balls and press onto a well greased cookie sheet. These cookies expand pretty well so I like to keep them on the smaller side. Melted candy cane is a real mess, so you may want to line your cookie sheets with parchment paper or be sure to pull the cookies off the sheet quickly after baking.

Bake cookies at 350* for 10-12 minutes.

Let cool completely then frost with buttercream frosting and sprinkle with the remaining bit of crushed candy cane.

Enjoy! And then, maybe consider making this salad if you need something to counter all that sugar.

Have you ever tried it with the soft peppermint candies? The kind that kinda melt in your mouth? I wonder if they would melt when baked (thinking out loud lol). They sound delicious!

Bet they were even better this year with the intern’s assistance. I have made these several times (thank you!) but unfortunately no sweet little hands in the mix #dittoparchmentpaper

Oh man, if I didn’t have a 2-day Holiday Market this weekend I would totally be making these tonight. Actually, that’s a lie, I’m a profound procrastinator. The real story is that even though I have a 2-day Holiday Market this weekend I would probably make these tonight anyway except that my oven broke :(. Super duper sad face…

Can you share your frosting recipe too? I’ve tried several butter cram frostings and have yet to find one I love! Thanks 🙂

These sound awesome. December is such a great time for candy cane flavored everything.
Ooh, and use silpats to make baking sheet’s non-stick! They’re pretty much magic, and I think even dishwasher safe (I don’t have a dishwasher, so I can never remember what is and isn’t).

Hi Elise! This may be a ridiculous question: your recipe says “oil.” Can I assume peppermint oil? Or do you mean just plain old cooking oil? Thanks!

Those pictures looked so tasty I went out to get ingredients and made them right away. I’m happy to report back that they are delicious! My husband must have taste tested about three just to be sure. They were a perfect host gift at a holiday party we went to last night.

Oh! And I forgot to mention, I used my Vitamix to break up the candy canes when I started having trouble getting them broken with a mug. Worked like a charm! Might help someone else who is having trouble getting those things broken up.

Ditto to the silpat!! They can be kinda pricey (20-30 for the smaller size) But SOOO worth it! Nothing sticks to them and they last forever. I’ve had mine for a good 12 years, and I don’t bake without it.

I had a feeling those dishes were from West Elm! I think I know my favorite store well. And I’ve never had candy cane cookies, somehow…I just realized today how unfortunate that is. ;]

These cookies are amazing. And for those of you who have a Vitamix, it works great for crushing candy canes.

I made these a couple of years ago after you shared them and I LOVE them! I haven’t made them since, but I’m thinking I might have to whip up some of these before the big day next week :). Just a tip…Michaels sells bags of crushed peppermints/candy canes if you want to save a little time on the crushing side of things (unless you’re using it to work out frustrations! ;)).
