Aroundhere Aroundhere3

Right after Thanksgiving we picked up our tree and I got the decorations out from the garage. We don't have much – just two small bins, mostly of candles. It's always fun to set everything out though and since I tend to buy all my decorations on sale on December 26th then pack them away for the year, I always find something I forgot I had.

Ellerie has been pretty cute with the tree. She's mostly interested in all the balls (which thankfully, are plastic). All day long she'll touch them (or grab them) and all day long I pick up stray ornaments and stick them in a bowl on our shelf. After she's gone to bed I'll rehang everything (otherwise my month would be one long tree-redecorating party).

We're doing a simple version of Elf the Shelf this year. I bought an Elf (Ellerie named her "Cuddles" – which is the name of every stuffed animal in our house) and each morning we "find" her in a new spot in the house and Ellerie proceeds to cuddle her. It's adorable. I'm learning you're either very "pro-elf" or "anti-elf" (I am neither but I just thought it would be a fun way to expand the Christmas season). Next year we'll do an advent calendar too.

Candles are my thing in the winter months. I hate that it gets dark so early, but if I can't have sunlight, I'm going to have candlelight. We are making a point to eat dinner as a family at the table (it's my number one goal in 2015 for us to do nightly) and each night we light candles on the table. Little rituals with little kids are the best. You do it one night it's special. You do it two nights and it's just the way things are done.

Our Christmas cards went out the door yesterday and I am thrilled to check that off my list. I'll be sharing them early next week, hopefully after they've arrived at their destinations.

'Tis the season around here for sure. (Next week we're visiting Santa!) I love it.

Lots of DIYs in this post. Here are the links : string stars, star tree garland, felted garland, JOY wall hanging, Christmas collage.

The 2nd picture (Ellie “helping decorate”) and the 8th picture (eating dinner with Paul by candle light) are beautiful. They’re all beautiful… but those two photos kind of melt my heart.
(Also, I love that Ellerie is SO smart and appears to be fully aware of the camera, haha).
    Merry Christmas (season) 🙂

These pictures are adorable! I grew up eating at the table but this tiny apartment of ours doesnt allow it, so we eat on the couch, though sometimes i put on music instead of the TV, that way it feels more like we are eating an adult meal. Someday I will have room for all of these things.

Hate to be that guy, but do you have a source for your awesome wooden candleholders on your dining table? I have been on a major candle kick this season myself!

I grew up eating family dinner together every night. We all had our “assigned” spots, and we always lingered on past eating to talk or watch my sister dance or sing or whatever acting she had up her sleeve. When we got to high school, we got pretty busy so family dinner didn’t happen every night, but when it did, it was special. Even now, when the 5 of us are home together, we have family dinner. We play games (sometimes “Things” sometimes we create our own game shows), we are in our twenties now and it still matters. In college, I would host family dinners with my friends. No TV on. Everyone at the table. I am sure it was a ton of work for my parents, getting a homemade meal on the table and the 5 of us together, but those memories, and those meals, mean so much to me. What a beautiful goal for 2015. And when it gets hard, know that it will be completely worth it over the next 25 years!

That’s so true about the candles! I’ve also started lighting one at dinnertime. My two-year-old is candle-obsessed and it certainly takes the focus away from whether or not she is agreeing to eat anything (she is more than a little picky)!

I’m all for documentation, but do you ever struggle to be present in the moment? Or struggle with how much exposure your daughter gets online? It’s almost tiring to see so many photos of her or you home day after day. Not to be ungrateful–I think you have an excellent blog. It’s just … it’s a lot.

    hey Taylor,
Every so often someone asks me this and every so often I respond the same way –
No. I don’t struggle to be present in the moment. I really don’t, despite the fact that I’m taking photos.
Yes, I do carefully consider my personal exposure and my family’s exposure online. I think about this often and make choices that are right for us.
I don’t think you’re ungrateful (for what? this isn’t a service I’m providing). I don’t expect “thank yous.” You are totally allowed to have an opinion about any blog you read. But if you’re tired of it then it’s probably not excellent and it’s a good idea to move on.
    Thanks,
    elise

We got bright multicolor Christmas balls last year at Target when I was pregnant and now that my son is starting to wobble around, I am so glad that we bought plastic ones!! That’s such a good idea to keep a little bowl of the pulled off ornaments and rehang them all at once, I’ll have to keep that in mind for next year when he’s really up and around.
