Bookreport

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell / another super quick, race-through-it read from Rainbow. I liked this but didn't love it. It might have been that I just read too many Rainbow books in quick succession (sometimes I think you need to take a break from an author to really appreciate them). I did enjoy the background info on what writing fiction is like but I sort of struggle when the love story is sabotaged by a misunderstanding. (As you can probably imagine, Rom Coms tend to grate on me a bit.) Regardless though, this was a fun read.

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand / first things, first, people are Obsessed with this book. Obsessed. I posted a photo that had nothing to do with the book and over half the comments were about the book (not a bad thing, just an observation). It's an amazing story. Probably one of The Most Amazing Stories of the last century. The detail was rich, the fear was real, the story was truly alive. I really enjoyed it though it took me a long time to get through it. One thing I'll say, if you're just starting is that (for me) part two (the part where he's at war) felt really slow and I slogged through the details about the planes and who he was with. Hang in there. It becomes a frantic page-turner.

The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh / I have been sitting here trying to figure out what to type for a really long time. I enjoyed this book too but it's almost impossible to share my reaons why without spoilers. The character detail in this was just so (painfully) rich. It was heartwarming and heartbreaking at the very same time. Plus I feel like I learned a lot about topic I didn't know existed (flower meanings) which is always a perk of a fiction book.

On my nightstand right now : Yes Please by Amy Poehler & Lev Grossman's The Magicians triology.

what about you?

I’m just about to start Attachments by Rainbow! I’ve already read Park & Eleanor and Fangirl.
I’m also in the middle of Gretchen Rubin’s Happier at Home.

I filled my library hold queue with books from your book report posts (& the comments on those posts) a few weeks ago. I just picked up Unbroken yesterday & am just in the beginning of Part 2, so thanks for the warning that it’s a bit slow.
I read The Rosie Project recently & LOVED it. I think most of my other recent reads were ones you read & recommended, so no others to suggest.

Elise, I just picked up “Buy-ology: Truth and Lies About Why We Buy” from the bookstore and when I got the book, I just thought it seemed like a thought provoking book…but now that I’m reading it I have a feeling it was you who read it, and I just saw it on your blog/on your Instagram. Wondering if you’ve read it? I’m still in the first chapter but so far it seems like it would be totally up your alley!

Really enjoyed Unbroken. It’s so cool how books can be enjoyed by many for different reasons. I felt like I learned so much from those during the war parts. It triggered some really cool conversations with my father and husband, who have discussed WWII with my for years. Mostly they spoke and I glazed over. But this changed the conversation. I just finished Flowers yesterday! Wanted to hug and shake the main character all at the same time. Unfortunately, I suspect the child welfare system “graduates” more young people with these type of issues than we would like to admit. Wish I was more like Elizabeth. Wish all the babies of the world grew up feeling loved like your E and my N.

It’s another Rainbow, but Attachments is really good– I think you would enjoy that. Attachments and Fangirl are my two favorites.
I’m curious– did you like Eleanor and Park more than Fangirl? I’ve noticed with Rainbow’s book, you’re in one camp or the other. I personally didn’t enjoy as much as her other books… and it seems that people are either passionately in love with, or really dislike Eleanor and Park … there’s not much in between! 🙂
I’m putting the other two on my reading list– thanks for the recommendations!

I tried Unbroken and had to turn it back into the library… couldn’t get past the first part. Maybe didn’t give it enough time!
I just finished “Calling me Home” by Julie Kibler. I really liked the characters and the story.
I have also been reading Sarah Jio’s books – I really liked “Goodnight June” and “Violets of March” – just finished “The Bungalow” and also have read “Morning Glory” – I think I liked the first two I mentioned the most.
I recently finished “Bittersweet” by Miranda Beverly-Whitmore. I persevered through it, but it was a little too dysfunctional and warped for me. I enjoyed Ruth Reichl’s “Delicious” also.
I think my favorite authors over the past few years have been Nancy Turner (latest book Resolute is amazing!), Beth Hoffman (loved “CeCe Honeycutt”) and Kate Morton, whose books are long but worth every moment. Penelope Lively’s books I either really like or really don’t.
A few years ago I also delved into Gene Stratton-Porter’s books (my favorites were The Keeper of the Bees, The Harvester, and Freckles & Girl of the Limberlost, but was glad I read all of her books).
Have also been reading HeartMath (Childre), the Hormonal Diet (Turner), The Hormone Cure (Gottfried) and WomanCode (Vitti) because I’m having some health issues I’m trying to get on top of…

The Signature of All Things. If you don’t follow Melissa Gilbert, you really should jump on the wagon. Heck, every woman should be her fan. She’s amazing and by the time I read the last page of The Signature of All of Things I felt as if something personal had happened to me. It starts out slow, but changes your life. What’s not to like about that kind of book!?

I just starting sipping my coffee and thought, “I hope Elise has a new book report up!” Lol! Fangirl for me wasn’t my fave (and I’m in the passionately loved Eleanor and Park camp), I just felt like nothing happened. Plus the parts where they inserted the fake fiction stories just…wasn’t my thing. I’ve currently got a bunch of non-fiction on my nightstand, nothing exciting.

Unbroken is definitely on my list, glad to hear you enjoyed it! I’m finishing up Call the Midwife (by Jennifer Worth) right now (I’ve been really into memoirs lately). Next up is either Freedom (by Jonathan Franzen) or The Bully Pulpit (Doris Kearns Goodwin). OR I might end up reading something else entirely … you know how it goes, I’m sure! I love your book report posts. 🙂

See, I Capital L LOVED Fangirl (but, I also got my masters at the University of Nebraska so I kinda geeked out over those details) and am struggling with Eleanor and Park (about 40 pages in – hoping it gets better?)
On my nightstand: Attachments by RR and Not That Kind of Girl by Lena Dunham. And E & P if I ever pick it up again.

Hi Elise! Thanks for the book reports. I enjoy so much hearing what you and your readers are reading 🙂
Fangirl: I just discovered Rainbow Rowell and sped through all of her books (except for Landline) in about a month. I agree, sometimes you need a break to get a fresh perspective but it’s hard when you love an author and want to keep reading! I liked but not loved Fangirl. Honestly, I skipped through all the ‘fan fic’ parts; Harry Potter-y adventure is just not my thing. I enjoyed the quirky boy/girl love story that RR does so well.
Unbroken: Not my normal read but I’ve heard such great things about it. Thanks for the warning about part two. I’ve only downloaded the Kindle sample so far but it did grab me right away. So that’s on the To Be Read list for sure.
My recent reads: The Way Life Should Be by Christina Baker Kline (nice story of finding yourself in your 30s when life hasn’t gone as planned; lots of Italian food talk – yum!) and Jodi Picoult’s brand new Leaving Time (excellent!).
Reading now: This is Where I Leave You by Jonathan Tropper. This is my 2nd go at it. I can’t decide if I love or hate this family, LOL. Also, These Girls by Sarah Pekkanen which is well-written chick lit. In the car, I’m listening to Rosie Dunne by Cecilia Ahern which is entertaining. I’m a sucker for books written as a series of emails 🙂
Sorry for the “novel” of a comment. Happy Reading all!

Unbroken is in my hold list at the library. Loved The Language of Flowers. Currently reading No Angel by Penny Vincenzi, which was recommended by my dentist who is an avid reader – half way through and enjoying it. Also in my queue: Lovely, Dark, Deep by Joyce Carol Oates, Gilead by Merilynne Robinson and Horse Heaven by Jane Smiley. I’m retired and read at least 2 hours every day. Really like your book reports.

Some Rom-Coms are excellent – I usually start giggling & denegrate to snorting with Victoria Dahl or Eloisa James – the first is contempory & the second is historical.
Middle son is part way thru Unbroken – I am impressed he’s sticking to it. Personally I am in a book coma after finishing Becoming Queen by Kate Williams (Charlotte & Victoria’s history) and The Lady in Red about Seymour Worsley. Some comments/reviews on my blog http://sewscrapmuse.wordpress.com
Love your lists Elise – off to download The Language of Flowers.

yay!!! you finished the language of flowers!
i love, Love, LOVED that one.
have you ever read Ken Follett’s Pillars of the Earth?
it’s in my top 5…quite possibly my very favorite book ever,
though it’s difficult to actually put that label on a book.
it’s a long one {nearly 1000 pages}, and you have to give it about 80 pages to really get into it. but after that, it kind of just sucks you in.
i’ve read it multiple times, that’s how much i love it.
currently reading the cuckoo’s calling by robert galbraith…
and trudging through it. my attention span these days is
equivalent to that of a flea, for some reason.
i liked gretchen rubin’s The Happiness Project much, MUCH more than
    her Happiness at Home…fwiw.

Book to read: The Romanov Sisters by Helen Rappaport. I have never been into historical books for fear of becoming bored and having it feel like reading a textbook. Rappaport does an amazing job of writing the details of the lives of these 4 sisters and sharing the story that so often is misunderstood or twisted. I loved it!!! You should check it out.
