my WDS speech is online!

Imagine my surprise slash excitement slash nerves this weekend when I stumbled on my World Domination Summit speech on Chris’ Vimeo page. I’m a little to scared to sit and re-watch the whole thing but I did watch the first five minutes and the last five and for the most part, breathed a long sigh of relief.

What a pleasure it was to speak in front of such a crowd this summer – a career highlight FOR SURE. If you missed it, you can read my detailed account of the adventure here : part one, part two, part three.

Random, but I mention two women I admire in the presentation, Amy Poehler and Erin Loechner. I casually note that they are my cousins. This has not quite true but was more of an inside joke with the audience after AJ Jacobs‘ speech about how we are all related (you can watch that here). Awesome in real life but a bit awkward in the Internet world.

    Elise, this was so great! You sounded so polished, and the words were perfect– thinking through some big life transitions right now so thinking about my “bold statement”– who I am, what I want to be able to say I do– is great.

    That was wonderful! What a great message. Definitely what I needed to hear as I share with everyone and work towards my bold statement of completing a triathlon. I’ll definitely be re listening to this for quotes!

    Hi Elise, I really enjoyed your talk! It was really inspiring, I particularly love the idea of just starting, and learning as you go. I am a terrible hoarder of fabric and crafting supplies, and I am always afraid to experiment in case I waste stuff. My goal now is to try, and accept that it’s ok to throw stuff away if it goes wrong! Thank you for being so brave, Jenny

    awesome! thanks for sharing this. i come up with a lot of goals – but have a hard time accomplishing them. i like the idea of step 1 to step 2. not step 1 to step 100 like i tend to do.

    Wow, Elise!! I am so impressed. And inspired. The quality of your preparation really showed. Amazing delivery. I was jotting down notes and my own bold statement that has been stewing around in my head for a while. I didn’t know how to put it exactly, but using the “I ______.” format was perfect… put it right out there- no need to overthink it or couch the message in extra words.
    Loved when the audience gave you applause for “this is the scariest thing I’ve ever done” 🙂 One of my favorite things you said was “setting a definition hasn’t limited my business; it’s inspired it”. YES. This makes so much sense to me as I’ve begun my own photography business. Great, great job. Thank you for sharing!

    Elise,
    I have been following your blog since 2009. I know you must hear this often, but I’ll say it anyway : you have been an absolute inspiration to me.
    This speech just emphasized how much of an inspiration you are, especially considering you covered my favorite idea of just starting without fear of failure. I can’t begin to explain how such a simple concept is so powerful to me in this season of my life.
    So, thank you for continuing this blog and for being consistently genuine. You’re one of the very few bloggers I’ve continued to follow over a long period of time.
    With all of that said, congrats on this awesome accomplishment! You and your speech were amazing.

    Although, here’s a rhetorical question – I have professional reasons why I shouldn’t voice my big statement aloud (want to leave a job for another career). Any advice for someone that wants to make a bold statement, but not too loudly? 🙂
