Wideanglelens

Last week I rented (from Nelson's Photo Supply in Little Italy) a wide angle lens (the Canon EF-S 10-22mm) to take photos of our bathroom for a project I'm working on. The photos turned out and I had some extra time so I decided to play with the lens in other areas of our house (that frequently show up on the blog) AND show you a side-by-side comparison with two of my other lenses.

I posted five different areas below. In each series, the top photo is the rented wide angle. The second is the lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm) that came with my camera (Canon Rebel XSi), backed out all the way. The third (the Canon EF 35mm f/2 – which I bought for under $300 but is currently over $700 on amazon!) is the lens that I have on my camera most of the time for photos of people, product, projects, etc. To keep the playing field even, I stood in the same spot and held the camera the same way. I kept the aperture constant and processed these the same.

Here's my office. You can now see that I really need to get that under-cabinet chord situation figured out and that my fiddle leaf fig is dying a slow and painful death.

This is the view when you come out from the hallway which features the kitchen and garage entrance and my favorite two paintings.

This is what you see when you come in the sliding door from the backyard. (Yes I totally cleaned the house for these photos.)

This is Ellerie's room (Yes, I totally picked up her floor for this photo. #opposite)

And our bedroom! You can see that I still have the mobile up. Our hanging plants are doing SO WELL. I have almost completed my rug extravaganza! (And, perhaps in the most false advertising about my life I have ever published, I made the bed for this photo as if that is something I would do on a daily basis.)

COOL HUH??!?! I love seeing this side-by-side. The wide angle I rented is out of my budget to buy, but I have heard really great things about the Canon EF-S 10-18mm that is less than half the price.

I feel like I should note, this post is not sponsored in anyway. I have no idea what I am doing with fancy camera equipment, but I do very much love to experiment. I did, however, use affiliate links throughout this post.

Even though I’m not a “camera person,” it’s so cool to see the comparisons! And neat to get a different view of rooms we’ve seen on your blog! Thanks for sharing!

Loved seeing the comparisons-thanks for sharing. Fiddle leaf fig—indirect sunlight, not too close to a window and water once every 7-10 days, and home them in a not- too-large pot. I got two at the same time, one i sort of neglected and was able to bring back from a single leaf(!) and the other has gone from 10″ to almost 4 feet in a year and a half.

Mmmm, I have been reading a lot about the newer 10-18mm, too. I’m trying to tell myself fancy camera selfies can wait until Christmas and then I can ask Santa for it. 😉
Love the comparison. I have even less of an idea what I’m doing, but I still love “researching.”

That lense makes your space look HUGE. It’s really interesting to see the difference. I might have to look into renting equipment with my own camera.

I love seeing more of your house! It’s such a cool place 🙂 I request an update on the gallery wall behind the TV… I’m wanting to do something similar.
Also after seeing the clear globe pendant in your kitchen, I’m 99% sure I’m going to get a couple for our living room. Lights are so hard, but I love how the globe is both modern and subtle.

I’m curious as to why the photos from the 35mm lens look so zoomed-in… is it designed to shoot close-ups like that? I know nothing about cameras and am curious!

This is awesome! Fun fact that you may not know – the Rebel series has a crop sensor, which means the sensor inside the camera is smaller than one on a 35mm camera or a “full frame” digital camera. Among other things, that means that lenses on your camera look more “cropped in” than they would on a 35mm or full frame camera. It can make getting wide shots a little tricky!
I also love seeing these nice wide shots of your house! Great inspiration for me to stop procrastinating and make it happen!

Yes! I had realized this and it’s too bad. 😉 my 50mm is almost unusable on my rebel. I love it on my film camera though!
And thank you so much. 🙂

It’s a pretty rad lens for most of what I do. 95% of the Dslr photos on the blog are taken with it. All the recipes, around here, photos of e, etc. 🙂

    Hi Elise,
As others have said, great idea to do the side-by-side comparison! Love your decorating style by the way. I didn’t know that Nelson’s rented lenses (fellow San Diegian here, so thanks for that information too!

    Hi Elise.
Loved this comparison! And I agree with J about fiddle fig–go with indirect/filtered light. I let mine dry out a bit before watering thoroughly. They also do not like to be moved around, so once you find its happy place–let her sit. I do a quarter turn every couple of weeks, but otherwise let it be. It’ll likely come back in due time. Best of luck! & thanks for all the great inspiration.

I put my fiddle leaf fig outside on my patio this summer and it really loved it! Maybe try that? It grew a lot out there which was nice because it wasn’t looking so great this Spring. I will have to bring it back in because I’m in WI, but hopefully it will not get so bad in the winter again.

I very much appreciate your honesty, humor, and sarcasm. Thank you for being real!
Your style is totally growing on me. Which sounds as of I hated your style and that was never the case; it just wasn’t me. But now I find myself being more open minded to wood, contrast, succulents, etc. Loving the result.

I really like the middle pics the best-from your camera with the EF-S 18-55 backed out all the way. There really is not that much difference in what you are capturing and close enough to see things better. With that being said-why spend more money to get a few more inches of picture further away! You’ve got it girl!

I have the Canon 10-18, and I love it. It’s just enough of a wide angle to make a real difference. I also have the kit lens and a 50mm 1.8, and I’ve really started using the wide angle for so many different things. It’s quickly become my favorite lens for anything beyond portraits.

I have the same kit lens and the nifty-fifty. My husband was shocked that I had to back up a ways to take pics of him with his parents recently, ha ha.

Wow, I can’t believe how much of a difference there is between the lenses!
Not really much of a photography person (though I am trying to become more of one!) and never really understood why someone would spend so much on a lens, but this has really opened my eyes to the differences between them!
Definitely inspired me to look into this whole photography thing more!

This post was so helpful and I loved seeing your entire home. I had toyed with the idea of borrowing a lens from an online site specifically for the purpose to shoot my home but I just bought a whole new camera altogether so I hafta put the kibosh on any camera expenses for a while. Loving all those layered rugs in the bedroom, too!

Woah! That wide angle lens looks amazing. Out of my budget, but still awesome. Did the edges of your images get distorted? I’ve been wanting a wide angle, but I don’t want it to warp the edges of the photos.
