enJOY it

an archived personal and craft blog from Elise Blaha Cripe.

This story starts with books. And I do not doubt it will end with books (reading, not writing them).

I love to read. More than I love any other thing. Books are my best friends. I draw my energy from getting lost in a good story. I always say that I have the blog to thank for every dime I've made the past few years, but without my love of reading, I wouldn't even have a blog.

Because let's be honest: loving to read led to loving to write and if I hadn't started writing, my "small business story" would hardly be a haiku: "Didn't like to write. Never started a blog, so – yes, there was nothing."

I have dozens of memories of reading and writing growing up but two that jump out as worth sharing.

The first are the Baby-Sitter's Club books. They (along with the Boxcar Children books) formed my childhood and I read every single one (plus the Super Specials which I loved plus the mysteries which I hated) at least three times. I learned early on that I could skip chapter two when Ann M. Martin rehashed what the BBC was and how Kristy was bossy, Stacey had diabetes, Claudia wore big earrings, Mary Anne was shy and Dawn came from California. I don't remember realizing they followed a formula but I do remember having my mom read the diary entries the girls wrote because I couldn't yet read cursive.

I was six.

The second is not an actual recall, but something I have seen on our VHS home movies. I'm in our house in Santa Rosa reading outloud the "story" I had just written in huge scrawl on a spiral notebook of recycled paper. It's called "Boo!" and it's a shocking and intriguing tale of a Halloween party turned surprise birthday bash for a pet puppy. (How that didn't make the NY Times Bestseller list, I'll never know.)

I was seven.

Books were the staple of my early elementary years. Years later, though, writing assignments became my favorite. I remember learning how to write a three-prong thesis my freshman year of high school. I remember five paragraph essays and solid introductory sentences. I remember over the next three years of high school, "writing" became more complex – "make your thesis without stating your examples" "vary your sentence lengths" "include more than five paragraphs" "never say 'I think' because it's a given that whatever you write is what 'you think'."

I soaked it up. Every English class. Every lesson. Every correction scribbled in red pen. Writing was the key, I realized. Who cared what you thought or knew? If you couldn't communicate it in some way, did it matter?

I never considered being a professional writer or professional reader. Both of those activities felt like hobbies and tools to get things done more than an actual career. I applied to six different colleges (Cal, UCLA, UCSD, Pepperdine, Cal Poly and USC) my senior year and my objective was obvious. It was the boldest thing I could state on my applications: I was a business major, through and through. I wanted to work in a tall building and wear a suit.

It wasn't until spring of my Senior year of high school, after I had received my three denial letters and three acceptance packages (and had properly mourned and celebrated them respectively) that I realized I had another passion in addition to reading and writing.

I really loved making stuff to sell.

to be continued… click here to read part two.

and if you missed it, here's why I decided to tell my story.

Yes yes yes! I LOVED the Baby-Sitter’s Club books too! I read every single one multiple times and especially loved the Super Special that took place in NYC.
I have to say – I love the risks you’ve been taking in your writing more recently. And I love that you’re sharing your story.

Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly be more obsessed with this space, you go and give a shout out to The Baby-Sitters Club. You’re simply the best, Elise 🙂

First, yes to Baby Sitters Club (and the skipable second chapters) and Boxcar Children. Some of the first “chapter” books I read. Second, it’s so funny to hear about your passion for being a business major when you really come across more like a writer, maker, and artist in your blog. But I guess the business passion is what helps you make your making a career.

My favorite was Nancy Drew, though. They were an old series when I was growing up, and my mom found an old copy of the first one, Secret of the Old Clock, and I was hooked. Probably around 7 or 8. I used to hunt local flea markets and yard sales and amassed the first 60 or so of them. Still have them. My daughter’s 10 now, she only has a slight interest, she likes more current series. That’s ok, still hoping. Michelle t

BSB forever. I’m still upset my mom sold my ‘keep’ pile of books in a yard sale that included my BSB collection. One of my college friends just completed her collection of the entire set + all super specials. http://www.buzzfeed.com/expresident/facts-about-the-baby-sitters-club-that-will-blow#d8gx1y

Yes! I LOVED the babysitter’s club books! All of them. Did your Mom save them? I wonder if Ellerie would like reading them once she gets older. I liked reading my mom’s old Nancy Drew books, so maybe Ellerie will like reading your old babysitter’s club books!

Fun! It has been cool to see your writing evolution – I think you are talented! Cool to see the background.
I read almost all of the BSC books – but I was super, super passionate about Sweet Valley Twins and Sweet Valley High books. Even though they weren’t great literature, I soaked them right up. I wanted to be a YA writer before it was a “big thing.” 🙂
I clearly remember being 9 years old and writing short stories. My mom typed them up on our typewriter, folded the sheets in half, and then I drew the cover art. Fun stuff. Maybe one day I will get around to writing that YA book 🙂

Can’t say I read those same series’ but I, too, had a childhood filled with reading and writing. My first college major was Criminal Justice (I thought I wanted to counsel traumatized officers or perhaps become a lawyer) but I quickly changed to English, realizing you have to DO what you LOVE, what makes you able to breathe. I was blessed to get a degree in something I couldn’t learn enough about, whether it led to a career or not. And now I blog 😉 ha. When you say “Poly”, was it San Luis Obispo or Pomona and were you accepted? Just curious – Cal Poly, SLO is my alma mater. Enjoying this series so much, Elise, Keep going!

The paragraphs above about writing assignments and English class? SAME SAME! The ‘I think’ sentence was stolen straight from my brain!…I still to this day type out ‘I think’ and then go back and take them out because — yep. SAME SAME!
I recently got a new job as the Social Media Coordinator (a.k.a. blogger) for me & my BIG ideas, and I’m having such a ball! I have found a way (how did I do this?!) to make blogging my professional occupation — and the best part is blogging encompasses all my loves in one: writing, designing, communicating, crafting, photographing, sharing…it’s been one month, and it’s been the BEST! ❤ ❤
    Looking forward to part two.

I read voraciously as a child – Sweet Valley, BSC, Nancy Drew, Box Car Children, Sunnyside Camp, Sleepover Friends, those Sweet Dreams teen romance novels, anything and everything by Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary, Lois Lowry, Cynthia Voight (Homecoming, Dicey’s Song), Louis Sachar (Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Sixth Grade Secrets), Taffy Sinclair books.

I was obsessed with the BSC when I was a kid. I had every book and had read them all at least twice. I met Ann M. Martin when I was 9 or 10, and got my picture in the newspaper as she signed my books in WalMart. However, when the newspaper article came out, I read she had a team of writers for those books, which is why she was releasing so many each year. I was devastated when I found that out. To me, it was my idol turned fraud.

My two older girls loved the BSC series and the Little Sister series. I still have the books in my garage. When they come home for a visit I sometimes find them digging one out and reading it. Its like comfort food. I am a school librarian and I read the original Boxcar Children to my 2nd graders. This book is timeless.

Reading is so wonderful and has always been a part of my life. I’ve been volunteering in the library at my son’s school. It is one of the best parts of my week. Yesterday, I was helping a grade 4 girl find a book about dragons – I have always loved fantasy books so we chatted about our favorite titles. Before she left, she came back to me and recommended a graphic novel series, Amulet. It made my day.

I wonder, were you old/young enough to do high school writing and college apps on a computer? I wonder, bc I also grew up avidly loving to read but I did not love English class. I did not love having to write everything bc it was all long hand. I am left handed and I got bad grades (Cs) in penmanship. I had to spend so much time worrying about my penmanship I never got into the writing thing. I applied to 12 colleges and all my applications were hand written and all my essays were individually crafted bc I could not cut and paste
