Quilt1 Quilt2 Quilt3

This week I finished up the September edition of MAKE29. I have much more to share next week (and the edition will go on sale 9/22) but (as you've guessed if you've seen my Instagram feed) it's a sewing project. You would think wrapping up a giant sewing project would make me want to pack away the thread, but I found the opposite to be true. I was absolutely raring to go on the next project.

And, since it's September, that next project is a quilt.

I spent all of September (and October) 2013 working on the Get Quilty ecourse. In September 2012 I wrote a pretty in-depth triangle quilt tutorial. In September 2011, I was working on my second rectangle bed quilt. (And the fall before that, I sewed my first quilted project ever.)

September, man, there's something in the air.

I have had these fabrics for months (and sadly no longer have sources) but this is the first time I've felt inspired to use them. I decided to shy away from my normal "all pattern all the time routine" and add in some solid white. I am also skipping the fancy cutting technique and I just used normal scissors instead of a ruler and rotary cutter) to approximate 5×5 inch fabric squares. (I use this method to create the triangles.) I realized that since I am not perfect with my sewing seams it doesn't really matter how perfectly my squares are cut at the start. My corners are never going to match up anyway.

Either way, after a long summer break, it's nice to be back at the sewing machine.

ps… check back this afternoon for our favorite pizza sauce recipe!

    Oooh! Those colors!
Sewing my own quilt is still on my ‘someday’ list since I just think it would take me too much time. How many hours total would you estimate it takes you Elise?

It must be September because I signed up for your GetQuilty course! 😛 I’ve been wanting a reason to bust out my sewing machine and get familiar with it. Perfect reason. Can’t wait!

I KNOW right? Something about the time going into fall makes me really want to sew and knit and crochet stuff even though I’m not good at it and never feel the need the rest of the year xD Maybe I’ll actually manage a scarf this year…

Oh yes! I just started, too … what about knitting, does this kick in in fall for you as well? I haven’t quite caught the bug this year yet … but sewing, oh man! I’m on. Memo to self: share progress on instagram next time the machine is around 🙂 I love your peeks!

not elise, but I thought I answer anyway.
I made a few quilts in the last two years and when I worked on my second one, I wrote down all the steps and how long it took me. In the end I spent 18 hours on the whole quilt. But I finished the binding by hand. (and that takes around 2 to 3 hours at least)

Fall is also the time when I want to start sewing again. I discovered an awesome fabric shop (umbrella prints) a few months ago and I can’t wait to create my next quilt.

Ooo, that fabric looks wonderful! Great choices. Sewing has been calling out to me, as well. But we moved into a fixer upper a few months ago, so my machine is burried under boxes, and my time is is taken up by thoughts of refinishing floors and the like.

I bought your Get Quilty e-course last spring and have been saving it for fall to read curled up with a cup of coffee! I can’t wait to dive in. I’m really looking forward to making the table runner for our new table.

The ruler and cutting wheel are more about speed for me than perfection. That and my hands would get so tired just using scissors. Good for you to let go of the perfection. My MIL is a perfectionist quilter and I always feel like mine don’t measure up, but a wise friend once said if you can’t notice it from a galloping horse it isn’t worth worrying about.

I don’t have a crafty bone in my body, despite pretending I do, but you’ve got all the crafty bones.

Based on your history, it does seem like the only logical thing for September would be a quilt! Have FUN!

    Elise, you are amazing.
I’ve never commented before, but I SWEAR, every time I research something, a post of yours pops up about a week after on that exact topic! I’ve googled the best process for a Chemex, the “perfect white t-shirt,” how to keep plants alive, and just this past week have been looking into quilting. Are you reading my google searches?!
Thank you for being genuine and allowing yourself to write posts on a variety of topics that interest you. It pays off, big time! 🙂

that’s awesome! I think I am slower on the wheel and ruler but maybe that’s because I cut through so much fabric at once with scissors?

I just posted my first real sized and planned out quilt on my blog today. I’d love for you to see it. I am really happy with how it turned out. Up until now, I’ve always done the cut-sew-maybe-it-lines-up method.
Also, I feel the same way about September… make things for the future cuddles that will come with the fall.

Cute colours for this quilt! I think I might figure out my sewing machine this season and start working on a new quilt for our bed since we’re looking at upgrading to king size, but I need to find the right colours first

I like that mentality. My husband says that if it doesn’t have holes in it and keeps you warm it’s a perfect quilt.
