After Ellerie was born I started having a lot more fun taking photos. Don't get me wrong. I have always LOVED taking photos. But I am learning that, for me, it's more fun when my subject moves. And it's more fun when my subject grows. (No offense, potted plants and cups of coffee.)

Waitforit

I also now take A LOT more photos. (Again with the moving and the growing.) I've gotten a few questions on Instagram about how I get "good" photos of Ellerie and while I have shared technique tips here and cropping tips here I thought I'd share another secret.

I wait for it.

Waitforit2

Generally I know the shot is possible – the light is right, Ellerie's in a good mood, the background is decent – so I get my phone ready. Then I set the shot, which for me means lining things up, either by crouching to Ellerie's level or by setting my phone on the ground.

Waitforit5

And then I start snapping. Over and over and over. I don't say anything to her, I just let her move around naturally. I usually know when I've got it and, no joke, my breath catches in my throat. The one perfect photo. It's there, caught in the 8 to 12 other decent shots that aren't quite the shot.

Waitforit3

As you can see in these "outtakes" the camera doesn't really move. I keep things lined up and just let Ellerie do her thing within the frame. The key for me is to keep the camera out long enough. Usually the best photo comes a few snaps in (though not always).

Waitforit4

I like to share stuff like this to keep the mystery out of my photography. It's just about getting things squared up and then…waiting for it.

all of these were taken on my iPhone 5s and the final images were processed with the VSCO app and shared on Instagram (along with photos of my coffee, projects and plants).

Hahaha! I literally thought the “wait for it” title was for me since I’d clicked on your blog twice before your 8am (my time) post was up.
I love these posts so much, because I have a tendency to believe that others’ photos that look beautiful and effortless actually are and that might not always be true.
One of my fave posts in this vein was the cropping one. I would love it if you would share another cropping before and after post sometime. I learned so much from that post!
    Thanks, Elise!!

At 11:20 in the podcast today I yelled “YES!”. No joke!
I also listened to the episode again immediately after it was over.
SUCH a good one. I mean, they’ve all been fantastic but this one for me was saying the words I needed to hear and soak up.
    Thank you!!!
(Also, great post about photos. Lovely!!)

Hi. I woke up this morning thinking, I wonder if Elise will do a post about formatting pictures for blogging. (You mentioned doing this in your post about your digital photo “organization”) I love your posts about the business of blogging. They’ve helped so much. Also- I love that you’re interested in taking “the mystery” out of things. So, while you’re considering content and pictures and such, I’d personally (not that you’re blogging for me personally) love to know how you format pics for your posts. Thanks!
(Also- you’ve got a winner of a baby there. ;))

Awesome shots, Elise! When I’m snapping my little moving subjects, I usually turn the sound off on my phone so the kids aren’t distracted by the clicking. Just another little tip!

    This tip is ON POINT.
If I’m using my “real” camera to photograph my kids I’ll shoot in manual mode (i.e. set my ISO or shutter speed and white balance) but I always make sure that I’m on autofocus and have my shutter set to take continuous photos. That way, when my little toddlers are running and jumping around, I’m not sitting there messing around with the focus or waiting for the shutter to release and reset to take another photo.
I am convinced that having my shutter set to take continuous photos with one press of my finger is THE game changer for me. Sometimes I’ll get lucky and get THE SHOT on the first or second try, but usually I’m left with 50 great or good or straight up horrible shots for every perfect 1 that I end up with.
Patience [in parenting] is such a virtue…in more ways than one.

Great tips. As a mom of a 4 and 2 year old I completely agree, you gotta wait for it. And keep shooting while you wait. Also, you want enough room on your camera to take those extra photos. Not that I’ve EVER had a problem with a full camera 😉

I do that, too! It seems more important as they get older and no longer want me taking photos.

I’m so disappointed. With a such title I thought your post was going to be about How I Met Your Mother. grin
Love the outtakes. Ellerie is just so damn cute. 🙂

How you resize them & what sizes are good for a blog. Also- do you rename them all from something like IMG_7588 to WaitforIt_01?

I resize them to fit my column so mine are all 470 px wide which is too small. but….that’s the size of my blog, so that’s what I go with. If I was rebuilding my blog from scratch I would set my main column to be at least 600 pixels.
I rename most of them, mostly so they are easy for me to find. Ideally, each should be titled with something that is easy for google to find for SEO. This is a great blog post about that : http://thefreshexchangeblog.com/2014/08/seo-for-bloggers/

Elise, I can’t remember if you have one, but this remote works great with the iPhone (and Android). Just in case you want to jump in while you wait for it. Thanks for reaffirming that people are more fun/interesting to photograph than things (and my dog) AND that I am not the only person who feels like 1 out of every 100 shots is really the one I care about.

This is great, thanks for sharing. My husband is always asking, “how many photos do you need to take?” I’m just waiting for it! And I love how sometimes the photo series shows a whole story, a progression.

Thanks for sharing your photo tips! I was once told by a pro photographer that for every 12 shots you take, there is one good one in the bunch!

How does little ellerie not head straight to your phone? I take the phone out and it’s a magnet for my 10 month old daughter. I’ll be all set to get photos of her in action then she sees the phone and it’s all over! 😉

Great shots 🙂 Even i do the same but my major prob is that as soon as i hold out the phone(or camera) to click pics my 5 month old stares at it. She stops doing whatever she is doing and just stares at it. How do you handle this? Any tips?
