Augustgoals

On Saturday, I posted a photo similar to the one above on Instagram.

The difference was nothing was crossed out in the first photo. I hashtagged it (as you do) with #augustmanifestoisboringbutnecessary and #makeitpublicmakeithappen. (Obviously that second one might have more traction.)

Dresser

We've been in our house for 1.5 years (already?! OMG.) and the thing about THAT is you start to settle. You get used to the fact that the outlet in the bathroom doesn't work so Paul charges his toothbrush on top of the dresser. You get used to the fact that you absolutely HATE that damn dresser. You get used to the fact that the baby's closet doesn't close properly because THERE IS SO MUCH STUFF packed inside it. You just deal. Because, well, it's normal. This is how it is, right?

One and half years in one place?!! That's basically forever in Cripe Land. In Cripe Land 1.5 years means, "Who cares what's wrong or what's right?! We're on to the next town. On to the next military move. On to the next 'Paul's deployed so Elise will orchestrate this transition as fast as possible.'"

But not this time. We're here. WE. ARE. HERE. (all of us) for another 2.5 years (at least). And so it's about time that I un-capped the Sharpie and started getting serious about this list. Time to get this house "finished" and "settled in a good way."

There are some spaces of our house that I totally adore (this is one and if our chairs did not legit break every time you pulled them out, this would be two and okay, I like the TV space so this is three). But there are other areas that need to get a "fixerup" and August feels like a good time to get a move on.

Rugs

So…mid-August, hello to you! It's not going to be pretty but it's going to be effective. As you can see from the highlighter and the few photos in this post, I'm making progress. Searching for a new entry table? That sounds like a dream. Finding some sliding door hardware? That sounds like a good job for Paul. Hanging up some palm trees in the bathroom? I'm excited.

Time to get over the 1.5 year slump and shake things up. Who's in?

Etarget

Yay, little E! We're happy to have you on board.

ps. those instagram photo magnets on our fridge are from sticky9 (formerly stickygram). I'm planning to COVER the fridge before we move. If you want to order some for yourself, use code FRIEND29D9 to save $2 off magnets or $5 off an iPhone photo case. (Please note, If you use the code, I'll receive affiliate credits and be able to add to my obsession collection.)

This is the inspiration I needed to kick my own butt and get similar tasks done at our house.
    Thank you, you rock!

Thank You, once again for being the inspiration I need to get.stuff.done!
Two weeks ago, I made a thorough list, inside and outside, of what all needed doing around our house. And it took about 6 pgs, front and back, of legal-sized paper, ugh!
And it has sat, on my desk, for those two weeks since. I have done a couple of the smaller things. So, yea! I can cross a couple of this morning, when I NOW go, and break it down.
Goals, right? I have to stip thinking about it all, and make an action plan 🙂
Thank You for this post today! I’m inspired to take that list of mine, and set some goals for getting this stuff done!
And my husband thanks you too, little does he know. It’s a major source of stress for us both, and he (& I) will be so,relieved to finally get this stuff done! You ROCK Elise!

Good for you! We’ve been in our apartment for 8 years and still not done! I’m changing this!!!
Can I ask which size magnets you order from Sticky9? I am about to order some and can’t decide which size! Thinking the big lines as they will be replacing the photos on our fridge!

I laughed so hard about that picture from Ellerie at the bottom of the blog. It was like: I’m reading a very serious article, and then, bam. Ellerie is in..

Hah! I’ve lived in my house 2 years now and one of the first things my husband wanted to do was replace the baseboards in the living and dining rooms. He got most of that done but I don’t have quarter rounds yet or the wall behind the tv that has bead board—that has no baseboards or has been repainted. Instead we’ve haphazardly done about 50 million other projects!

That picture of E is my favorite thing ever.
We’ve lived in our house for a little over 2 years, and I keep telling myself that we can’t do any more projects because the only ones that are left are the “expensive” ones (gut and replace our kitchen, gut and replace our master bath, build a deck…) but you’ve got me thinking there’s a LOT more that I could at least switch out! Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes to getting settled! My husband and I work with a non-profit that does community development, which means we signed a contract to live in a tiny two bedroom apartment for a three year assignment (with our three kiddos). It’s so easy to see this as a temporary space and not take the time to settle in. This post has me inspired to do something crazy like paint a wall this weekend!

Ha! This makes me feel a little better. I’ve been panicking because we’ve been in our new house (first time home owners yay!)for 2.5 months and it is so. not. done. Not even close.
The end of this post is my favorite. E is so in! It’s like she couldn’t wait to be the first to volunteer! Cute.

I made an impromptu summer list about a month ago and in addition to fun stuff put “clear out the house and have a garage sale” our sale was last weekend and it was so great. We still have (lots of) spaces that need work but we’ve been here NINE years so it’s a sort of constant, slow refreshing.
Good luck finishing the list 🙂

I can so relate. We are in the lived-here-for-4.5-years-now-slump. Time seriously flies by. All the plans we had when we first moved in have fallen by the wayside as we grow our family one by one and try to just make it through the day without too many messes! Thanks for the little nudge to make a list and actually try to cross things off!

this is such a great idea and it is what has been on my mind lately. After moving EVERY YEAR in college and grad school (and twice one year) for a grand total of 6 times in 5 years I have now lived in my home for 5 years — it’s showing! I have not had to do the grand ‘move-out-clean-up-and-out’ in 5 years. Closets are full, light switches are temperamental, the fridge light just went out … I will make this list and make it happen too.

Make it public to make it happen—that’s one of the reasons I started blogging! Thanks for the inspiration. Some days it’s easy to think, Well, we’re going to move soon anyways, but creating a home is worth the effort.

Love you # for this! We’ve just finished building a place, and when we did, we decided a lot of things like doors and appliances we would do ourselves since it would work out a lot more affordable for us… 3 months in, we’ve done a few of them, but the list is still HUGE! Thank you for your inspiration to make a list and work through some of the most nagging ones bit by bit! 🙂
