how I use instagram to promote my business

I LOVE INSTAGRAM.

If I only got ONE social media outlet, I'd pick the blog. But if I got two, I'd pick the blog and Instagram, no contest. It's just so easy. And clean. And simple. And functional.

I use it to connect with people I haven't seen in years (like people I went to high school with or cousins who live out of state). I use it to share photos of Ellerie with the grandparents (and aunts and uncles). I use it to make friends with other bloggers around the world. I use it to document our lives. I use it to get feedback on something I am working on or considering. I use it to share the best TV clips ever. And, yep, I use it to promote my business (which right now is this blog, my shop, podcast and workshops).

I don't think there is a single winning formula for successful self and/or brand promotion that isn't annoying. There just isn't. It's a balance between keeping people interested and informed without over-doing it – but you're always going to bug some people and leave others wanting more. I'm in an odd position where my life and my brand are sort of blended. I share about (some of) my life on the blog and that (sort of) supports the business. I also have a genuine personal interest in my shop and branding. Because the line between personal and professional is faint, my Instagram feed is sort of a mish-mash and looks something like this :

photo of Ellerie, photo of food, photo of Ellerie, photo of project, photo of garden, photo of coffee, photo of Ellerie and coffee and project in the background, video clip of Ron Swanson, photo of coffee and garden, photo of Ellerie, photo of shop item, photo of Ellerie, shop item, coffee and waitforit, food.

But guess what? That's because my life looks like this :

Ellerie, breakfast, Ellerie, work on a project, look at the garden, drink some coffee, Ellerie, watch Parks and Rec, work, coffee, Ellerie, look at garden, work, Ellerie, work, dinner.

I'm not ashamed of that…it's a pretty rad life.

Running this business blends right into my daily life and so it just blends right into my daily Instagraming. But that doesn't mean I am not deliberate about how I share photos and promote my business. Below are some things I have learned about promoting through Instagram.

Calltoaction

Consider the medium. Most people (if not all) are going to be scrolling their feed on their phone. They are most likely engaged in something else too (watching TV, on a coffee break, waiting in line to checkout at the grocery store, waiting for the microwave to beep, etc.) They are not settling into your feed the way they would be curling up with a blanket and your blog post. Because of this, I like to provide QUICK, bite-sized bits of info like…"sharing XXX #ontheblog today" or "XXX just launched at elisejoy.com!" Highlighting the blog works because people can click through my profile if they're actually interested. Elisejoy.com works because it's easy to remember and just eight characters to type in. A long hyperlink (which works on Pinterest or Twitter when shortened) or a long paragraph (which works great in a blog post) might not be as successful on Instagram.

Photos

Do something special. A random pet peeve of mine is graphics or screenshots getting posted to Instagram. I think it's because FOR ME, Instagram is an inspiring place to share photos…so when I scroll my feed I want to see PHOTOS! I try to take another photo on my phone in addition to the ones I take with my big camera to promote a blog post. I have been playing with paper and pen to promote my podcasts. It's just as easy to write something and snap a photo as it is to play with an app to create a graphic PLUS it's a slightly more interesting way to share your message.

Hashtag

Let it spread. I personally use hashtags in three ways. First as sort of like an under-the-breath comment for the real comment. (#likeajokebutnotalwaysfunny.) Second as a way to create a collection of my own photos so I can see them all in one place (like #eliselovesmornings or #eliselovessummer). Third as a way to share business product photos AND encourage others to do the same. I do this with #make29 (and LOVE seeing others tag their photos when they receive their packages) and with the podcast (#elisegetscrafty). I feel like these days everyone and everything has a hashtag but it's still rad to see it spread.

Promo

Take a good photograph. I know, hit you over the head obvious. But whenever I am sharing behind the scenes or peek at a new product I make sure the light is right and the framing is decent and the image looks good. Just because it's not the "official" product image doesn't mean it shouldn't look awesome. My friend Marta says it best here : "when you sell an item online, you are actually selling your clients a picture of the item."

A great post, as usual, Elise!
Like you, I’m a bit Instagram lover and it does annoy me slightly when people post graphics and big camera photos.
Your Instragram feed is awesome and incredibly inspiring! Thank you 🙂

Your IG feed is one of my favourites to follow and so inspiring. Since you’d talking about it here, though, I though I’d let you know that I usually can’t read the #elisegetscrafty handwritten Instagrams. The writing is just too small – and I have perfect eyes at 26 years old!

Your photos and hashtags are what really get me in your IG feed (okay, so that’s pretty much everything). I have only recently begun to sort of look at instagram feeds and collections on a meta level, noticing relations and paying attention to what strikes me as “likeable”. Good one!

Your instagram feed is so inspiring. The way you keep your life clean and simple makes me want to declutter my life 🙂 As a reader mentioned above, your handwriting can be hard to read, making your #elisegetscrafty notes a little hard to decipher. Don’t get me wrong, your handwriting is beautiful with all the loops and skinny lines, but when you write out sentences it’s a little hard to read. All in all, your my favorite blogger! Stay rad!
p.s. Ellerie is just the cutest!

Great post! It seems the more people jump on the Instagram bandwagon, the more that the initial idea gets somewhat diluted and it’s not being used as effectively as it could be! Love that you called out the photography aspect too!

Ok, I have to contradict you on the graphics thing. One of my favorite things to do is sit on the couch and fiddle around with artfully placing graphics on a photo. I love it so much, I decided I wasn’t happy using other people’s graphics and bought a wacom stylus so I can draw graphics directly onto my own photos!
And do you have a little tiny crush on Ron Swanson? Or is it just me? I normally hate facial hair on a man, but something about that mustache…..

Thanks for this post, Elise! I’ve been trying to decide whether or not I want to start using my personal Instagram account for my blog promotion, as I’m still not sure if I want to blend my personal photos with blog related photos (since Instagram doesn’t currently allow users to create separate business pages). Because blogging often blurs the line between personal and professional, it can be confusing! Thanks for giving us some food for thought. 🙂

Thanks Elise. I’m always interested to see how other people who run a ‘blended’ personal and business Insty account go about it. Like you, my business and life tend to meld together on Instagram. But since I’m so transparent in my business, I think this simply adds to my appeal. I firmly believe people buy from people, not businesses.
    Super practical tips too.

love this post elise 🙂 you have been inspiring me with your hand written notes to promo your podcasts… love it! I recently started using my big camera photos in IG to promo a blog post BUT only when put through whitegram. I think this helps it stand out a bit in my feed of photos- and honestly its all time allows for me since blogging isn’t my full time job- but I agree with you, I like to only post shots from my phone to IG. Again though, to each there own and whatever works for you 🙂 thanks for all your insight been LOVING the podcasts!

I’m absolutely with you on all things Instagram, and I love your theory on hand-written notes vs graphics. I’ve just started the process of splitting my creative online identities in two, so I can launch a new venture which will still have a bit of a personal mix in there, while my original artwork account will just be for that work.
It feels so strange now to be starting a new Instagram account (thebearsawake) at ZERO when my other account (alexlouisa_) has 30k followers, but you have to start somewhere!
Sidenote: Am happy to have found my way back to your blog after about a two year absence from pretty much all things blogging-related since my boys were born. I’ve (surprisingly) been more productive than ever but ran out of time/energy for other things. I think I found you initially through your GOventures with Kal!)

I really loved this post. I’m trying to decide whether or not to blend my business with my personal on Instagram. I was wondering what you do to deal with any weird people that follow you on Instagram. How do you handle that? I know it’s inevitable with an open account and that’s what has been holding me back from opening my personal account to the public. I’m afraid of sharing about my kids and the things we do as a a family, even if it’s just in very small ways, so I’d love to hear what you do if this was or is ever an issue for you.

Just found this on Pinterest – I agree with so much of this. I use my Instagram feed to share my life and my new jewellery creations. It might be a crocheted necklace during the making process, or a view of the street outside a new stockist in a pretty village in Northern Ireland – great way to promote my business more naturally, as well as providing pretty images and my everyday life – walking the kids to school, newly painted furniture in chalk paint etc.
    Thanks for sharing.

The main problem for Business in Instagram is where to get first 5-10k followers.
I used to promote my client’s law business and know how hard is it 🙂
So, i recommend to use some services which offers followers. But be careful: use ONLY real followers. Otherwise, you will be banned.
I used this service and recommend it : http://www.buzzinstagram.com/

Great advises, thanks you for sharing! I’d like the article even more if you’d added some useful applications. I think they’re a crucial time-saver, so i’m always looking for new ones luckily they’re released quite often. I personally use about 5+ different apps on daily basis. I can’t imagine editing without Whitagram and VSCO Cam because i don’t like instagram’s everlasting filters. Efficient management is impossible without detailed statistics, so Iconosquare.com is my choice. When it comes to following management i use fast-unfollow.com to easily get rid of up to 5000 users not following me back in one day. And finally a scheduler – latergram.me in my case – to keep posting consistently. For most of these apps there are analogues, but always inferior: they have either higher price or fewer functions. If you know some interesting apps please do suggest them to me, i’d highly appreciate that 😉

Ps… I also really enjoy mixing business with life to keep things interesting… and I SOOOO love the idea of personalising some of the hashtags [facepalm – why didn’t I do this earlier!!!!]

Your tips about personalizing pictures with hand-written notes and providing QUICK information were awesome. And the way you blend your personal life with your professional life is just commendable.
