FITBIT

Since May 1 (for nearly three weeks), I have been wearing a fitbit flex non-stop. I wear it all day. I wear it in the shower. I wear it to bed. I have taken it off a few times while I am at my computer to charge the battery – but that's it.

I have gotten a few questions about the fitbit on Instagram and I'd like to answer them here.

Fitbitapp

What's a fitbit?

It's a pedometer that looks like a bracelet that you wear on your non-dominant hand. It tracks steps, miles walked, active minutes and calories burned throughout the day. While you are sleeping, it tracks the number of times you are awake or restless. (I love this feature!) It connects via bluetooth to your computer or your smartphone. (I am not sure exactly what sort of smartphones, but I have an iPhone 4s and it works with that. My mom has an iPhone 4 and it does NOT connect to hers.) There is a free app you can download that syncs with the bracelet and gives you an INSANE amount of data about how you are moving. You can also enter how much water you are drinking (I do this) and what you are eating (I do not do this) onto the computer or the app.

Still have questions? Here is the amazon listing for the flex that I have or you can check out the fitbit website.

Why am I wearing one?

I recently stopped pumping breastmilk for Ellerie. If you've followed for awhile, you've heard me mention that I pumped and bottlefed exclusively from about six weeks on. This was a choice I made for a few reasons and not something I have too much to say about because I am not looking to provide advice or receive feedback. It was a tremendous hassle, but on the whole it worked for us. I am thrilled that I was able to provide Ellerie with breastmilk for 10 months. I am also thrilled that I am done. Because my "attachment" was to the pump not the baby, the only emotion "weaning" resulted in was joy.

The point though (and the reason why I mention all this), is that for the first time in over a year and a half my body belongs to me (and only me!) again. IT'S A GREAT FEELING. I don't have time to go to the gym. I don't want to pay for childcare while I take work-out classes. But I do want to get in better shape. I thought that this might be a great way to be aware of and increase my activity level.

Fitbitfamily

Does it work?

That depends. Yes, I think the fitbit does track steps accurately enough (is it perfect? Probably not, but all that really matters is that it's consistently imperfect). But it's only going to WORK (make you healthier) if you WORK (on making yourself move). If you are motivated by this sort of stuff (goals, data, graphs) then you will flourish with this sort of system. If you are not, you will not.

Example scenario: it's 8:30 PM and according to the app, you've only moved 8,000 steps today and your goal is 10,000. Do you feel discouraged and angry at yourself so you continue watching TV? Or do you feel encouraged and motivated to get up walk around? If you picked the first option, don't get a fitbit; it will bum you out. If you picked the second option, get a fitbit; it will inspire you.

THAT SAID : if you get the fitbit and find that on a normal day you are getting about 4,000 steps, I would recommend lowering your daily goal to 6,000 (you can edit all goals from the "factory settings") and then pushing for those 6,000. No sense setting an un-realistic goal for your lifestyle! You can always up it down the line and any progress is great progress. 🙂

Fitbitchart

Has it helped?

When I first bought the fitbit, I was SHOCKED to discover how in-active I actually was. (I thought for sure I'd be hitting 10k without issue.) Turns out on a "normal day" I would probably get about 7,000 steps. Now that I "know" my numbers I am pushing myself to MOVE (mostly by taking longer walks but also by adding running with Paul and the stroller into the mix). The first week I hit 10,000 steps only 3 out of 7 days. The second week and so far this week, I have hit it everyday. If you're a numbers person, I have lost 2 pounds since May 1.

But another strange side effect is that my house is the cleanest it's been since Ellerie was born. Instead of spending my last 15 minutes before heading to bed on the couch scrolling Pinterest, I'm darting from room to room putting away toys, wiping down counters, clearing out closets and taking out the trash. Am I crazy? Oh, for sure. Am I getting my steps in? Absolutely.

In sum:

From past experience I know that when I want to be healthier counting calories or restricting food is a recipe for failure (or in the case of my junior year of college TOO successful). I've basically ate the same way for the past three years (you can read more about the my switch to better, smarter eating here). Because I'm pretty set in the food arena, increasing my activity level and moving more is a great option for me when I want to feel better physically. This will come as a surprise, but I am totally goal-oriented and LOVE that I can see actual progress in bar-graph form. 😉 If you feel similarly motivated, I recommend the fitbit or similar step-counting device.

This is a great post (like all your others!). I have also been wanting to make a change to be more active without having to take trips to the gym, so this sounds wonderful.
I’m pursuing my Master’s degree, so if I get the fitbit, I think it will motivate me to walk everywhere instead of taking the campus bus and only partially walking to class.
I didn’t know what all the fuss was about with the fitbit until this post, but it has so many great features- it sounds like I’d love the sleep information feature, especially, like you do!
I also loved reading about your switch to better, smarter eating, something I’m excited to try.

Have you heard of Stroller Strides? It’s a group fitness class you do with baby in a jogging stroller. My kiddo is 5 months and we just started going 3 times a week a couple of weeks ago. I love it! It’s a great workout, an excellent way to meet other moms and get some social interaction in, and the best part is that you don’t have to worry about childcare. Since it’s outside my kiddo is perfectly content to hang out in his stroller for an hour. Highly recommended for any mama looking to fit in some fitness.

I just got a Fitbit Flex two weeks ago and am loving it so far. I have been using it consistently and haven’t lost much weight yet, but overall feel healthier and more informed. My boyfriend just bought one too!

You can also sync it with myfitnesspal to add in your food. Myfitnesspal has a barcode and you just scan in your food. It’s really easy and when it syncs with fitbit it gives you a betters estimate of how many calories you burned. Another cool sync is earnedit you can make challenges with friends or maybe even your blog readers!

I love my fitbit! I’m a few months in and the novelty has worn off a bit, so that I almost don’t even notice it, but I still love how I can look things up if I want to. This post is inspiring me to pay a bit more attention to it again and maybe lower my goals a bit so it’s a bit more exciting to hit them.
The one thing I will say is that the fitbit is NOT waterproof. They claim water resistance up to 100 feet or so, but mine got waterlogged when I accidentally left it on swimming. There may have been some other factors, but definitely take it off for pool/ocean dips. The good news is that after a little back and forth with their customer service they sent me a new one for free!

Love this post – and love my fitbit, too! If only it helped keep me on track with core work like yoga and barre too 🙂 I’d also love to hear about your experience with the jogging stroller – and how it’s worked when you and Paul have started running with Ellerie. Thanks!

Love this! I’ve seen other people with fitbits, but they don’t seem inspired to work harder or anything and just use it as some sort of accessory. It’s great to hear feedback on such a costly product from someone who is using it correctly and definitely thinks a lot more like I do (very goal-oriented and motivated by such information). I’m in the same boat: I’m perfectly happy with my eating habits, but I do want to make myself happier and healthier by working out more. It’s still hard to really keep track of that accurately though and I think this is a great product! Have you been doing any other exercises besides walking/running?
    Thanks for sharing!

I have the fitbit zip and knew I wasn’t very active (I work from home and have no baby to chase after) but it was a shock to see the number (pretty embarrassing, but I was more around 1500-2000). What was even more shocking was to see how many calories that was in a day, with this little steps at a my height and weight, I was burning no more than 1500-1600 in a day. No wonder I was gaining weight even though I wasn’t eating that much. It’s a big eye opener and I would definitely recommend it for people who are having trouble losing weight and wondering why!

Great post! I have a fitbit, and a desk job. I knew that I wasn’t getting many steps in between 8am and 5pm, but I was seriously shocked at how low it really was once I started wearing the fitbit. IT’s a huge motivator for me to print to the printer farthest from my desk, take the stairs to a more distant restroom, or just to take a walk around my building.
I’m a runner, and I wanted the fitbit to help me be accountable outside of the 30-60 minutes/day I might spend running. It’s helped me do this (I don’t count my running mileage in my daily steps.)
For anyone considering it, know that the fitbit will not be an accurate distance calculator for running.

I have the Fitbit One and totally wish I had gone with the Flex instead. I wear mine clipped in the middle of my bra, and I have an older phone (iPhone 4) so the bluetooth doesn’t sync…it’s tough to discreetly check a pedometer between your boobs in public if you want to know where you’re at throughout the day, haha! Clearly I need to upgrade either my Fitbit or my phone to solve this problem. 😉
ANYWAY, I am in love with my Fitbit! The data throughout the day totally motivates me as a data loving, gold star motivated personality…I get so excited when my Fitbit syncs with my computer and I get the notification on my phone that I’ve hit my steps – I immediately go to the FitBit site so I can watch the happy “HOORAY!” animation telling me I achieved my goal today (I’m such a nerd).

I have used a FitBit for about 3 years and it has been instrumental in making me an active person. When I first got it I was shocked to see on a normal non-errand running day I was getting 3-4k steps a day. With the FitBit to taunt me I get 10K in every day, very rarely do I fall below (only if I have an injury or sick), and quite often go over 15K too. I love all the data that comes with it too. I recommend them to everyone I know!

Congrats on finishing pumping and WAY TO GO! I finished pumping at work not too long ago and I feel so light – physically because I am not lugging the hospital grade pump to work and emotionally because it was certainly stressful. Whether breastfeeding, pumping, or giving formula, feeding a baby is a heroic effort and each path has its own challenges, way to go mama!
As for the fitbit, isn’t it amazing how motivating data can be? And how inactive our lives can be (yikes!). I might consider getting one, thanks!

…as an inconsistent insomniac for many years, I’d be interested to hear how it can “help you learn how to sleep more soundly” simply from its logging of your sleep patterns and unconscious movement. I have searched the site’s help and it is not very helpful in clarifying that beyond the statement :/ Any insights?

    hey beka!
    my quote above is :
“While you are sleeping, it tracks the number of times you are awake or restless. (I love this feature!)”
I DO NOT think it helps you sleep more soundly. It does track your sleep but that doesn’t help you get “better” sleep. I don’t know how it would do this.
But I DO think that knowing how much time I am sleeping IS helpful. It’s motivating for me to turn off the light a bit earlier and catch a few extra ZZZs.
I don’t suffer from insomnia but it’s interesting for me to see restless states (for example, last weekend when I had a glass of wine too many I noticed that I was much more restless during the night!) GOOD TO KNOW. 🙂

I got my husband a fitbit force for Christmas this year, and he LOVES it. He comes from a competitive family, and over the past few months both of his parents and his two sisters have all gotten one. They love the feature where they can see each other’s steps, and “encourage” or “taunt” one another, adding another element to the system.

It will only work with Bluetooth 4.0, so that’s why it won’t sync with the iphone 4. I really want a Fitbit, but I’m waiting two more weeks, since Apple may present the iWatch in the first of June. (It is a small chance they will actually do so, but for me it’s worth waiting two more weeks.)

I am so glad you posted this info about the FitBit! I was wondering how it worked and your take on it. I too DO NOT count calories – makes me crazy! Or want to be overly concerned with what I eat except to have the goal towards healthier whole foods. No diets here because I have tried and they don’t work! and I too spend too much time in front of the screen when I should be moving my rear end. Which is what I encourage my kids to do but I don’t do myself! (enter another reason for a fitness goal! LOL!)
And I know you don’t want feedback on breast feeding but I just want to say, you rock for pumping breast milk as long as you have! Even 1 ounce ever is better than 0! Breast feeding is extremely challenging and difficult to learn. I had problems with both my boys but had a best friend who had zero problems with all 3 of her girls. It is weird! That being said, I just weaned my son as well and I am FILLED WITH JOY! Hormones are leveling out, I can wear any outfit I want without having to think how I will make my chest available, and I have my body to myself! Glorious!!!! Good for you for doing it so long and E appear to be happy, healthy and thriving!
One question about the fit bit: is it the same as a Jaw Bone?

Love Love that you posted about your experience with the fitbit! I have really been noticing them around a lot, especially around social media and such, and am seriously considering getting one. I keep going back and forth between the fitbit flex and jawbone up24. I almost pulled the trigger on the fitbit the other night, but then was reading about how the up24 was more accurate. OH what to do. Regardless though, I’m like you, and the numbers would really motivate me. I love me some statistics and graphs, numbers don’t lie!
I’m pretty sure that my numbers would be ridiculously low right now, as I work third shift at a desk ack! I would of loved to see my numbers back when I worked a retail job and was on my feet running around for 9 hours a day 🙂

    Hello Elise,
Thanks for this post, I was really curious about this fitbit since you talked about it!!In France fitbit is not really famous. Scientists and doctors have a lot of issues as regards the danger of wifi radiations. They make comparison with cellphones (risks of cancers with skin contact). I’m sure you are aware of this and I know your husband Paul is a doctor so I’m interesting in having your opinion about this?

I’ve tried to find this info on their website, but I’m wondering how it can count your calories burned if it doesn’t know your BMI. Height and weight doesn’t calculate BMI. Have you seen any info on this being a feature of the Fitbit?
