my unintentional photo theme this week: books! when I was pulling for this post I noticed that I had a bunch and decided to go with it. we LOVE books.

Happy week's end.

Paul and I were chatting on Monday about how FAST this year has gone. "Do you think this year has been faster than the first three [of our marriage]?" he asked. "Oh for sure," I responded. "But think about these first 4.5 months of 2014 compared to the last 4.5 months of 2013, now that time has FLOWN."

Nothing like a monthly project, a first year residency where you work nearly every weekend and a growing baby to make you feel the calendar pages are flying off the wall at cartoon speeds. Sidenote: sometimes I wish our daily lives were recorded just so I could watch a great montage of us drinking coffee, throwing together dinners and folding laundry set to pump-up music.

It's HOT here. 100* at 11am which is making us a little stir-crazy. We're very thankful to be south of the wildfires that have been spreading in North County this week. Thank you to those of you that have checked in! We're safe and grateful. Hopefully it gets under control soon and those displaced families can return home.

Next week is our last week before our WEEK LONG VACATION and I have all sorts of good posts planned. Look for : how we've fancied up our coffee routine (I can drink it black now!), my tricks for photographing babies, how I ship packages around the world without loosing my mind and (maybe most important) my experience so far with the fitbit.

Good stuff. Stay cool. TGIF. Cheers!

I’m reading the Creative Habit right now. I picked it up from the library after your podcast with Ali Edwards.

I was just thinking the other day how fast time is flying. I want to figure out how to slow everything down and really appreciate the time I have and make as many memories as possible.

It’s opposites weather – usually Oklahoma is burning up and we’re jealous of the cool temps of California. Do you have AC? When I lived in San Diego I remember that most of the houses didn’t have AC and we would BURN up those few weeks out of the year when the temps soared.

Those first two photos — !!!
I LOVE the book theme here. We’ve always kept 3 big Ikea Billy bookcases in our living room, filled to the brim with our book collection, but our current home has way too many windows taking up all the wall space (tough problem to have, I know), which leaves us nowhere to put up the bookcases. After nearly 18 months in the space I FINALLY thought up a kind-of solution, which I’ve been working furiously on over the past week and hope to finish up this weekend.
I think it’s so, so important to have real paper books around for the little ones, which is a huge motivator in finding a way to include our book collection in the room our kids spend the most time. They may not be able to read them yet, or understand the ones they can read, but I want them to enjoy reading, not be intimidated or turned off by it.

These pictures are adorable! Reading is a big theme in our own household as well. I’m glad you and your family are all safe and away from the fires! My brother-in-law is in San Diego too, but luckily also south of the fires. I can’t wait to see what else you have planned coming up!

I’m soooo excited to read your review of the fitbit. I’ve been debating about purchasing one, or a different type of HRM watch.

I love your around here pictures!! She is soooo cute in that second picture, drools and baby teeth!!!
    Have a great week off!!
Time does fly, especially once you have kids. I pay attention more to the calendar with kids then before kids. Enjoy each precious moment!

Books are a favorite around here, too. Enjoy your week before vacation. This year is flying by at the speed of light. It feels like the older I get, the faster time goes.

Hi, Elise! I just finished reading your post and a couple of sentences caught my attention:
“Sidenote: sometimes I wish our daily lives were recorded just so I could watch a great montage of us drinking coffee, throwing together dinners and folding laundry set to pump-up music.”
Timing is a funny thing. Five minutes ago I signed up for an online workshop called CREATING TIME CAPSULES: A JOURNEY. Here is the link: http://www.xantheberkeley.com/a-journey-class-info/
I think you should check it out. It sounds awesome!! And you could totally record these moments you’re talking about. I’d love to be classmates with you! 🙂
    Have a great weekend.

BOOKS! My daughter is 16 mo and I’m doing a 30 day photo challenge with my “Big” camera in manual mode and the theme is books. It’s been fun documenting reading to her, her hands on the pages, her reading, piles of books she pulls out, etc. Thanks for sharing! Glad you’re safe and staying cool.

And the pic of E is too cute!
I can’t wait to hear about this fitbit thing. I have never heard of it but instantly wanted one hearing how excited you were about yours. I told my hubby that I “needed” one because Elise has one! LOL!

When we were a young family (my girls are 20 and 22, living on opposite coast away from home now), my husband traveled 2-3 weeks of the month. He always tried to be home on the weekends but when he couldn’t the first day he was home and not working we would label Saturday and treat it as such the whole day. It was tough but we survived and are better for it.
And really looking forward to hearing about the FitBit. It is on my list.

I had to laugh out loud at your coffee statement (“I can drink it black now”). Part of my plan, too 🙂
