Threethingsblogging

Next up in my series of things I know to be true … blogging. This is not the normal, "post frequently, be consistent and take good photos!" advice (though that's good advice, too). This is the deeper stuff that is totally true for me.

Write about what YOU want to write about. If I've learned one thing over the past 9 years it's that I have to write about what I want. Only. Always. Forever. Asking what people want to see from my blog results in seriously conflicting opinions (more baby posts! more DIY! less baby posts! more recipes! more about your family! less about your personal life! more DIY! less about your house! more about what you wore! less shopping links! tell me where you store your minibooks!) and for me way too much stress. It also results in requests for stuff that is relevant but is totally uninteresting to me. I can't fake it for the blog. Let me re-phrase that… I can't fake it for the blog and sleep well at night. So my advice is to just write. Write about your passions and adjust accordingly as your passions change.

Consider the goal. Why are you writing your blog? Seriously? Why? Nothing matters, stats, links, clicks, comments or post-frequency until you know the "plan" for your blog. Is this a way to share your stories with friends and family? It it a way to promote your business? Is it a way to create a community around a niche interest? It it a place for you to share the insane things that you witness while on the subway to work? Is this how you plan to support your family in the next five years? Knowing your goal is the only way to determine what actually matters for you and your blog. Being honest with yourself can save you a lot of stress and/or help you develop an actual game plan.

It all comes back around. All of it: the interest, the ideas, the pageviews. Like every other activity, my interest in blogging waxes and wanes. My ideas flow for weeks and then dry up completely. My stats go up and down, up and down, up and down as seasons change and links get shared and inspiration strikes. I cannot control my interest, idea flow or pageviews. But I can control my work ethic. No matter what, I sit down and write. Every week for sure and nearly every day. My goal with this blog is to share my passions and promote my business and so I dedicate many hours and energy into developing original content because THAT I can do. I have learned that the rest, all the stuff I cannot control, is cyclical and will always return as long as I keep writing.

ps… this post was intended to share my thoughts on blogging but when I read back through I realized these three things are my mantras for life too: Do what you love. Know why you're doing it. Trust the process.

I’ve commented on and off over the years, with my latest comment being just yesterday. Other than yesterday’s comment I usually introduce my comment with something along the lines of “another great inspirational post, I always mention your posts to my husband as ‘the person who writes all those inspirational posts – you know, the only blogger I ever talk about?”
Even when I didn’t have an active blog, I found a lot of truth in what you wrote that was directed towards blogging, but applicable to life. And this post, as you mention in your ps, is actually the same thing. Good mantras for life, too.

Are you just right inside my head? I’m a new reader (and listener!) and I just have to tell you that you are inspiring me left and right these days. I’ve been working on a post about starting to finally choose a direction for my blog, and I had already planned to link back to another of your posts….and I’ll have to add this one as well. Great advice. So obvious, but still so true.

I love these suggestions. The bloggy world can get so full of comparison. I work every day to just write about what I love and not let me joy be stolen by lacking statistics.

It’s so true that these three things are applicable to life. I’m trying so hard right now to stay true to “do what you love” and it seems like I may finally be on the right track. Thanks for a great post!

It is funny because I already knew this about you because each of these things shine through in your blog. You stay true to you and are passionate about what you put forward and THAT is why people love following along! Well done, as usual. You inspire!

You’re so true…blogging can easily become a big lie if you just write what people want..It doesn’t last long.. Show who you really are and what you can bring! That’s what I love here! Seeing that you are just a normal person in a normal life!
However it’s so difficult to just avoided statistics..
    Have a great day Elise!

This was a perfectly time post for me! I don’t know how many times my husband has said, “just start writing again, you’re good at it”. I’m letting the perfectionism and what-if’s get in the way of it though. I love to teach and I want to teach through my videos and blog! There, I said it. 🙂

I’ve been reading a TON of blogging posts across a myriad of sites, and I’m really glad you posted one as well!
I’ve been an avid reader of your blog for about a year now and you’ve definitely inspired me to start my own blog (it’s 2 days old- it took me a while to actually sit down and do it) and start Project Life and return to my old crafty ways.
I just wanted to leave a comment and let you know how inspiring you are and how much I love reading your posts everyday and listening to your podcasts now as well!
Sometime in the near future I really want to recreate one of the quilts you sewed (I especially like Ellerie’s) and I’ll feature it on my blog and link it back to you- I hope you get to check it out (:
Thanks for being you and creating such an amazing blog- yours is my absolute favorite ever!

That’s why I enjoy reading what you put here–it’s stuff that you’re actually interested in, and it just so happens that I’m interested in the same things. It’s like a conversation, but you can’t hear our thoughts (usually). Can’t wait to listen to the latest podcast!

It just baffles me that people actually suggest you blog less about a certain topic. I love to read your blog because I know that everything you blog about is important to you. I like your honesty, your vulnerability and your realness. Thanks for just being you.

All of this. I used to obsess over my stats, tracking daily/weekly/monthly. Now, I don’t care. I still check, but it fluctuates. I only get a little worried on the days I have no views, which are very rare.

I have a blog (I link it when I comment) but I struggle to update it. I struggle with content.
Not bc I can’t write – I do. A bucketload. If you wander over you better like to read words. But I struggle with what I want to share on a public platform with people I don’t know.
This is why I like Facebook (and not Twitter)- it’s password protected and you have to be my friend, and then I decide who can see what I post. I write so many things there, even longer entries, and I have friends comment: OMG! you should write a sitcom! To which I reply: I swear, I am not making this up.
I just got that comment this week, and it’s from my mom’s oldest friend (of over 50 years). She said: stop reading other blogs and write your own, you have SO MANY funny stories to tell. To which I said: I have a blog and I DO write! But no one reads it!
Anyway, my real problem is that it’s only about once every 3 months that I even think of something to post that I am OK with the whole world reading. If you’ve never been cyberstalked and had to file a police report (which I have) you probably might think, oh just write! But I don’t have a muscular military husband to protect me from rampaging internet readers 🙂
I’m thinking about trying to follow your (everyone’s) advice and be more consistent. Schedule something to post once a week at least. But I have not come up with a solution to this problem: wanting to share, but worrying about how some people can be really inappropriate on the internet, and opening myself up to that. (any advice for that one?)

Thank you so much for writing this. My friend and I write a blog together but both slowly stopped posting. Now we’ve kinda been feeling like “why are we doing this?” It’s nice to know that we’re not the only ones who get like that. It can be hard to remember these things sometimes but they’re so important. Thanks again ♥︎

This straight to the point & honest post is a great motivation 🙂 I couldn’t strongly agree more with really writing/posting abt the things you love & support. Then always keeping in mind why you are blogging. I believe that your goals need to represent you & your happiness so that they keep you going through ups & downs. Thank u for sharing these tips!

It’s gotten to the point that now with some people, I can drop the first part and just say, “Elise…”

    that is a tough one.
The internet is a two sided coin… with the traffic comes the crazies. No traffic = no crazies but it also = no connection on a larger scale.
In general though – my experience online has been overwhelmingly positive so it’s harder for me to speak about it (obviously).
Can you use facebook to promote your blog? (Maybe you already do that?)
Have you considered pitching your work to a larger site that takes guest posts or reader submissions? Maybe you will be more comfortable in a setting where there are others talking too and it’s not just you?

Thanks for posting this! I seriously blog because I love it – and my posts tend to be a bit all over the place, because they express what I love and am into at the moment. I’m working on getting a bit of a system together to keep things a bit more consistent, but this made me feel lots better! ^_^

I am so appreciative of the tips and wisdom you provide, which is why I’ve been reading your blog consistently since I stumbled over it in 2008. You’re really onto something here, Elise!

Oh Elise! Sometimes I swear you are inside my head and write your posts just for the perfectly timed moment that I need to hear your words of wisdom! Love this post so much and thank you heapsicles for sharing. I am only five months in to being a blogger and I stress about my stats and comment numbers and what posts people want versus what I love to write about and this post have made me realise that it’s not just me that worries and lies awake wondering! I love my blog, I started it to make new friends and document my creative adventures. I started my creative biz so I could do what I love and what I am passionate about every single day. Sometimes, it is soooo easy to forget this and it is like you have just sat me down with a cup of tea and let me relax a little. You are so right when you said that its is crazy to worry about things you cannot control. You are so so right. This isn’t why I started, I started because I am passionate, I love to create and write and share. Thank you so much!

Elise, I love this post because it’s so true. I just started back up my blog after starting one two years ago , writing a few entries……and let it siiiittttt there….. In April I brushed it if, started writing/posting three times a week with the attitude that I don’t really care if anyone reads it, it’s a blast for me to share what I’ve read, what nutty thing I or my family or some random stranger has done and I’ve been lucky enough to record it and share a picture on Wednesdays that meant a lot to me that week. I love your advice, live your blog and wish you and your little family the best:)
