I got a question recently about how I use my Behance action book and my first response (in my head) was "how don't I use my Behance action book?"

Since last fall I have used it for alllllll my business thoughts that are not complicated enough to warrant a spreadsheet (like income and expenses or my to-do list for the Blog Design Love 2.0 eCourse).

I thought sharing a few pages would make for a fun post and then I got carried away and took photos of the whole book. This is literally a spread-for-spread breakdown with photos of most of the pages. Feel free to skip this post unless you're like me and find how other people keep track of their work load fascinating.

AB

1 : quilt eCourse brainstorm

Ab2

2 : master list of photos to take for the quilt eCourse & ideas for quilt eCourse #2 (not yet finalized or realized)

ABB

3 : list of projects to create for the blog before 2013 ended & thermometer style chart of my financial goal for 2013 (drawn in September) and a break down of where that money will actually come from

Ab4

6 : stamp inventory & fall Queen Bee Market to-do list

ABC

7 : stamp inventory after the QBM & backyard plans and measurements

AMd

8 : grid I created to track a media campaign I worked on & list of various projects to complete before the end of 2013

Ab5

9 : initial brainstorming for MAKE29 (called edition29 originally) (two pages)

ABe

10 : "edition29" list of things to do before 2013 ended & 2014 photo calendar ideas and to do list

20 : MAKE29 project notes & notes from a conference call about joining a media network

AB9

21 : stamp order tracking (you might be like "ELISE, YOU TRACKED STAMPS BY HAND?" and I'd be like, "I know, it's embarassing.") & new website notes

ABi

22 : more stamp order tracking & MAKE29 video trailer breakdown of shots to capture

AB10

AB12

29 : another page of ideas for podcast episodes & a legit breakdown of what I needed to do for the use your stash class (I generally mess around with to-do lists to feel like I am on the right track and then when the deadline approaches and I get super serious and fancy)

ABl

30 : listings for my second FOUND instagram sale (two pages)

ABm

31 : MAKE29 project notes & a calendar breakdown of podcast episodes from April – July that once had  many more post-it notes until Ellerie "helped" me get organized

Looking back through this book as a very interesting excercise for me. When I look at the pages, this is what I see : Brainstorm. Calculate. Communicate. Mock-up. Plan. Re-calculate. Break-down. Follow-through. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

This is how I run my business. This is how I execute. This is how I make money doing what I love. I am obsessed with the nitty-gritty. I love to put my head down and work. I like to make stuff but I equally like to plan how I'm going to sell that stuff. I have found that success comes when you can balance the two.

I am about 2/3 through the book and just keep turning the pages. I always have a few different projects in the works (and therefore a few different revenue streams) and it's been awesome to keep track of everything in one place. I'm a huge fan of this book and will for sure have a second one ready and waiting when I fill in that final page.

please note : I am not affiliated with Behance or the Ghostly Store in anyway and yes, I totally think you could keep amazing notes in a normal spiral bound notebook. I just love that this one has the orange column to break down porjects and a grid section to fill up however I need. I'm always working to improve on my brainstorm and organization skills and so far this book is helping me do that.

Since writing this post, I created Get To Work Book! It's a day planner + goal setting workbook that is designed to help you take your big goals turn them into something real. Learn more and shop the brand here.

omg ! Elise-thank you for this. I would by far say my biggest & ongoing daily stress is keeping organized – my projects, thoughts, ideas, goals & dreams (+ attempting to schedule in a little bit of fun stuff). My iMac is like one of those old antique junk barns, filled to the brim with stuff, some of it super valuable and important and most of it needs to be sorted through and deleted. It’s become so bad lately I’m starting to create “to be filed March”, “to be filed April” folders on my desktop – most days I feel completely overwhelmed with maintaining & organizing my work “stuff”.
I would LOVE love more posts around organization for the Creative (computer storage, email, office, hard copy filing, inventory, anything you can think of 😉

I love seeing how other people keep organized & I think I’m a lot like you in the sense that I want notes on every step that I do so that I can execute my ideas the best. I love this! I’ve never seen this notebook before, but I may have to try a copy out to see how it works with my organizational methods.

This is really fascinating – thanks for sharing! I am a small business owner and like you,I have many different projects going on at any time. I use no less than 4 different books to keep track of what I do, but it’s not ideal. This book looks really helpful.
I just wrote an online article (for a Dutch online gardening magazine) about how I keep a garden journal and initially worried that it might not be very interesting for other people. But we can always learn from each another, right? 🙂

I have a garden journal. I plan on leaving it with the house when we sell. I have it broken down by each side of the house and the front and back and take pictures and log what seeds, bulbs and plants that I plant. Without it I wouldn’t know what stuff is and when I sell, the new owners will know all the names and how to keep the plants. Yes, we can always learn from one another!! Love the post Elise!

Oh my gosh Diana that is an amazingly wonderful thing! We moved last year across the country to a totally new zone, with landscaping a bit beyond our comfort zone and that would have been REALLY helpful! Hah, I thank you for your future buyers.

I’m also fascinated about the way other people organize their thoughts. I am going to give the bullet journal a try as soon as I can find a bookstore in Germany that sells a blank book I like.

It’s funny, yesterday during the PLL chat, when we were talking about planners and using those for memory keeping, I thought about asking you to share what was in yours– and then this post went up this morning! 🙂

Thank you for sharing! I still keep track of most of my biz stuff and ideas in different small notebooks. Use them all differently but would be lost without them. I make some spreadsheets and use QuickBooks for the financial side but nothing beats pen to paper.

I am currently obsessed with my Bullet Journal:
    http://www.bulletjournal.com/
I bought a lovely notebook with an orange cover. I not only keep all the pages suggested in the video, but since I am not doing Project Life, when I get cool memorabilia from places I go to, or business cards from people I want to stay in touch with, I glue them in. Once my year is up I will have a very cool journal full of all my to-do lists, my to-buy lists, calendar, stuff that happened (that you write with a bullet under the date) and all the little pieces I picked up along the way.

I love peeking into other people’s notebooks, thank you! Someone else mentioned it but you should definitely check out Bullet Journal, it’s amazing! I think the element that you might find helpful is you make an index at the beginning of your notebook so you know on which page you wrote about what. I love this Behance notebook, might have to make it my next Bullet Journal.

I’m going to out myself as a total list-nerd, but this might be my favorite post ever. I am an eternally curious creature about the work habits of others. Especially those that have a “system” that works for them and are willing to share it with others.
(And now I also sound like I’m full of crap because I’ve probably said, “OMG, THIS is my fave!” on many of your posts. But truly I love this!) 🙂

Wow, this was fascinating to read. There’s a great quote from Eisenhower ‘Plans are nothing, planning is everything’ which I often think of to remind myself that it’s the process of creating a plan that is the most important part, so it doesn’t matter how scruffy they get and it’s perfectly fine to create a new one when things change. So I switch between using spreadsheets, apps, mind maps, post-its and good old pen and paper, whichever feels right for each particular situation. And I love reading about new approaches, thanks for sharing.

Hi. Thanks for sharing. I love this book. As a non-US resident these things are often hard to acquire without paying ridiculous shipping charges. However, in 2 weeks I am coming to the US and will be able to buy one directly if you happen to know if they are sold in physical stores. I will be in LA and Las Vegas. Do you know if you can buy through a store or is it only online? Thanks

Hi Elise – It sounds like you really love this book. I’m wondering…. if you were designing the book, what would you do differently – what items would you add, modify, or delete? Perhaps, that could be another revenue stream – designing your own book. I bet there’s a few hundred of us who would buy 🙂 Oh, wait! Do it before the end of the year and we could have Make2029 books! Yes, I bet you could sell a few thousand of them!

This note book looks awesome! I keep many different note books for many different things, and while I think it would make sense to combine some, it’s never ended up working since I have to spend so much time looking through to find what I’m after and usually want to add to things, but run out of room on the page and have something behind it!
I currently have a Blog/PL binder, and a photo idea note book I keep with my camera, and a to do list note book, and a random project idea and tracking note book.
