So, it's quite likely that a few of you are going to read this and think "WTF, Elise. How do you have time to sew a top?" And the answer to that is, "I am not sure that I do."

But something I have learned over the past months and years of making a career out of making stuff is that sometimes to clear the noise and refocus you have to totally shift gears. And last week, when my to-do list was filled with eCourses to write and podcasts to launch and email to catch up on, I did that. I took precious baby nap time and precious nanny time to sew up a white linen top.

WHY DID I DO THIS?

Linentova3

Because when something fills you up, it's a creative tool, not procrastination.

Because on Monday I took the baby to the fabric store and we touched all the fabrics looking for something that will be ideal for a MAKE29 project idea I am currently entertaining. I bought three yards of white linen to see if it would work for what I have planned (it doesn't).

Because three yards is a lot of white linen, I thought to myself, "Elise! Make a shirt! Your style board is filled with white shirts!" Overwhelmed at the idea of finding a new pattern, I got out my trusty Tova from Wiksten and went through it for the fourth time (here is time 1, time 2 and time 3 – sidenote! It's so funny/awkward to look back on baby Elise in those old posts. She has no idea how busy her life is going to get!).

Linentova

Because this pattern is so insanely well written and each time I marvel over that. I also struggle with the collar every. single. time. (this time it took three tries to get it right). Whenever I sew something wearable I am reminded that handmade clothing is worth every single penny and then some. It's intense to try and get this stuff to look right, let alone create a pattern from scratch.

Linentova4

I put on my new top and my favorite old pants and I went outside to snap some photos. When I saw them on my computer I was reminded that this is totally my "look." I have learned over the past year that nuetrals – gray, tan, white, navy, chambray and olive/army green – are my absolute favorite. I have no reason ever to step out of this box because these are the clothes I reach for again. I don't want a closet full of crap that looks good "in theory" but I never wear. I want a closet full of go-tos. Neutrals are my sweet spot and I REALLY need to stop buying everything else.

And when I am feeling overwhelmed, I need to turn on old episodes of Parks and Rec and sew a shirt.

Great shirt, great distinction between procrastination and refuelling – also smart choice of a backdrop for the picture. I especially loved that the berries hanging over the fence seemed to match the color of your head band…

I so understand what you mean ! Before, I was totally freaked out by clothes patterns, running away and thinking that was not for me (you know, just being able to sew square things…). And NOW ! I so love sewing clothes (not that many actually but…) and just this past week-end I finished a little top for my daughter. And I’m now just obsessed by a top for me. I love neutrals and basics clothes (and kind of timeless clothes). And now (!) I’m also just obsessed by uour shirt !

It’s so true, we have to make time for creative pursuits that fill us up. It’s what keeps the fire going! And I totally agree with you on the neutrals. I’ve really pared down my closet toward them, and now when I throw on something too bright I don’t feel like myself.

    Love the shirt!!!
Did you ever decide to do Stitch Fix? If so, do you plan to share any “fixes”? I love reading about these in blog land because it’s always interesting to me to read people’s thoughts on dressing their body and what fits their style and why.

awesome shirt!! and I’m with you on all you said in this post, about finding time to sew even if is taking away from the “important” work stuff because you need to refuel and clear your head. And I’m a neutral girl all the way, every once in a while I buy something with color and never wear it πŸ™‚

I’m so impressed! I’ve been really wanting to challenge myself and sew something I can wear. And such an important reminder that sometimes the most important thing to do is not on your to do list, especially as a mama I think when your time is so easily consumed by the needs of others. I’m curious to know, do you still wear the other versions of this shirt that you made before?

I do use Stitch fix! I’m on my 6th box and so far I have kept one item from 5 of them. While I for sure plan a review at some point, I probably will not do monthly updates. I am still trying to figure out if it’s right for my style. πŸ™‚

This is by far my favorite from all of your top. I bought this pattern last year, but I never took the time to sew it. You totally inspired me to sit down this weekend and sew it. And a linen version is so awesome because it’s definitely the best to wear in summer.

Thank you! You put into words what I’ve been trying to… “when something fills you up, it’s a creative tool, not procrastination.” I feel like this opens me up to more permission to take the time, make the time to fill myself up. Thank you!

Elise, how incredible!! Such a beautiful top! And I always love and am inspired by your confidence in your choices and actions; thank you. I recently decided to embrace my comfort zone of navy, black, grey, and white and I feel so much more like myself when I stick with them, and that makes me feel beautiful πŸ™‚

Love the Tova top and am going to make another one (or two ) this spring! Did you alter the length or is that the length on the pattern? Great simple top and you did a lovely job on it. I wrote a post on needing a jumpstart last week and made two knit tops over the weekend!! Have several more projects lined up too!! Keep on sewing!

I really needed to read this tonight. Life is sort of swallowing me up right now, and I need to find a way back into creativity. I love the top! And I love that you know your style so well. Isn’t it so freeing to finally stop trying to force yourself into a style that’s just not you!? Love that.

I love it! I’ve been SO itchy to get back behind my sewing machine, but my little one isn’t really on a napping routine yet. You’d better believe, though, that as soon as I know I can shower PLUS do something else during naptime, my machine will be back out!! As for now, I’ll just be pinning some inspiration. πŸ™‚

this is so cute! i’ve only ever sewed one tova as a practice…i’ve been wanting to go back and make one for real. i love the fabric you chose. i saw your comment about the seams on the inside and just a tip: you can zig-zag on the edges of the seam allowances to tidy them up and prevent fraying if you don’t have a serger. it’s not quite as neat as a serger, but it works well enough and looks much better than nothing. that’s what i do!
and old episodes of parks and rec is never not a good idea.

ok also (i have a lot to say about this apparently?!) i saw in one of your older tova posts that you were looking for more indie pattern designers to check out. i don’t know if you still are, but i recommend checking out Megan Nielsen and Grainline Studioβ€”both rad designers who make really great wearable patterns.
