natural skincare faves

I've written about some natural skincare products a few times before (here is the very first post) but I figured it was time for an update of some of my favorites that we use around here daily. Some of these products I have been using since I made the switch to less chemicals (in September 2011) and others I just started using in the past few months.

skincare toxins to avoid

I carry the swatch above (it's from There's Lead in my Lipstick) in my wallet and refer to it when I am buying something new. If the switch to "green" feels overwhelming, I recommend starting small – if you're out of sunscreen, switch to a new tube without oxybenzone. When you run out of facewash, try a different one that's formulated without sulfates. This doesn't need to be an all or nothing change. I remember feeling panic when I started learning about all this and that panic can be crippling. Don't feel like you have to do everything (or anything, of course!) all at once.

So what's the point?

Well, long-term, ideally, I'm keeping my body healthier by being mindful about what I am slathering it in. (But it's not like I've given up using my cell phone and who knows what that will do to me in long-term?) In the present though, using "greener" stuff (products without harmful chemical and toxins) has helped me cut back on the amount of "stuff" I have to use. My face is much clearer than it has ever been (despite crazy hormone changes). My legs and arms are so much less dry despite the exact same amount of showers and less lotion use. And everything here, despite not having chemicals (or, more likely because they don't), works. It cleans, it heals, it protects against the sun.

Greenskincare

Babo Botanicals 30 SPF Clear Zinc Sunscreen : just picked this up for Ellerie and I've been slathering it on my arms before walks as well. Ideally, shade and sunhats are better for sensitive baby skin than sunscreen, but sometimes we need it. (Our doctor recommended waiting until baby is 6mos old to use any sunscreen.)

Josie Maran facial sunscreen : LOVE this. Goes on evenly and not sticky like many sunscreens. The best "natural" face sunscreen I have found. I have the older version of SPF40 stuff, I have no idea why they changed their product to SPF47.

Mineral Fusion Natural Brands Mineral SPF 30 Brush On Sun Defense : I received a sample of this a few years back and have been using it now for a year. (I've purchased my own since.) I love that it's all one piece (no need to bring a brush and a container) and find the coverage excellent (but I am VERY minimal when it comes to make-up).

Rocky Mountain Soap Company lemongrass body butter : I received this as a gift from two Canadian blog readers right after Ellerie was born (thank you!!) and I LOVE it. A roller lotion? Are you kidding? So easy to use (and pack) and the smell is perfect.

Badger Baby Balm : we use this on Ellerie's dry skin and in the early days when her scalp was dry.

Greenskincare2

Avalon Organics Vitamin C cleansing milk : my go to facewash for nearly three years. I like the "milk" more than the wash.

Pangea Organics facial toner & facial cream : used nightly after facewash. These are just the best.

Glo Minerals sheer lipstick in bali : this is awesome (chemical free!) and such a fun pop of color for the occasions you want red lipstick. I'm wearing it in this photo.

Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle shampoo and conditioner : I just switched to these because my old stuff (Unite) is no longer being carried by my salon and the other stuff I tried left my hair gross and limp. Have to admit, the price break is AWESOME and this is working great. No sulfates so no foaming bubbles, but also no drying chemicals. My hair feels build up free which is so important because it's insanely fine. PS, while you're at TJ's pick up their dripless taper candles. BEST EVER.

Burt's Bees almond lotion : love this for "problem spots" like chapped hands (I wash my hand so many times a day it's awful), elbows and heels. Love the smell too.

It’s like you read my mind! I was thinking of emailing you to see if post-baby any of your natural skincare products had changed. Wonderful update- thank you!
Btw, thanks to your previous skincare posts I’m now a big fan of the Avalon organics face wash. 🙂

Any leads on a good natural deo? I’ve tried several natural brands and none of them really do the job, especially not here in Florida. I’m using a baking soda natural, but it’s still got some funky chemicals in it (but NOT aluminum, so that’s something!)

Thanks for the informative post. I’m wondering if you’ve found any good natural laundry detergents and household cleaning products? I’ve tried Melaleuca products and like them, but I’m looking for something I can buy locally.

Great post! I’d love to see more like these as I’m a huge believer in the “less is more” philosophy. Keep ’em coming. : )
    For Beauty and skin care:
Burt’s Bees: I love love love Burt’s bee’s lip balms. They are the best.
Dr Bronner’s Magic Soap (it comes in HUGE bottles and lasts FOREVER!)
    Cleaning products:
I use non-toxic cleaning products like Ms. Myers and Method. And, try to use plain old vinegar when I can. It’s a magic potion. ; )
One HUGE change I made awhile back was to buy more UNSCENTED products. It has made a positive difference. Occasionally, i buy/use a scented product but its nice to not have all those mixed scents on me and in my home.
    Happy day, Elise!

I stopped using antiperspirant (Secret, Degree, etc) years ago, so many chemicals in them. I switched to just deodorant, and now I don’t sweat as much as I did when I used antiperspirant. Funny how that works. It takes about a week to “detox” -but after that the smell is great. My favorite brands from the health food store are Lavanilla, Kiss My Face Liquid Rock and Jason.

I love that Josie Maran sunscreen! I’m sensitive to a lot of sunscreens but that one I never had a problem with. It was temporarily discontinued and now it is back with a different SPF. I wonder if the formula feels different?
I also love using just plain old organic coconut oil. 8 bucks or something for a jar at Trader Joes. One in the bathroom and one in the kitchen! Makes a great eye makeup remover, (I “wash” my face with it, actually) gets rid of those funky red upper arm bumps, and when you add it to a bath it makes your skin so silky.

I actually JUST referenced this post, and I was secretly hoping you would do another soon! I enjoy reading your comments too- learning everyone else’s tricks is so beneficial! It annoys me when people post stuff like this in the comments, but here I go.. Here’s a post I just did on what I use for natural skincare.. Deodorant, shampoo, make up, etc. (http://thebelovedsociety.blogspot.com/2014/03/the-beginners-guide-to-being-crunchy.html)
Do you still use the same things as far as your make up, Elise? I am looking for a good natural mascara.

Lots of suggestions here already! I have been using KAI (the exact same one) for almost two years and LOVE it. http://www.amazon.com/Kai-Deodorant-2-6-Oz/dp/B007JW1ZJM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395671629&sr=8-1&keywords=kai+deodorant it’s expensive but (for me) works and smells awesome.
I didn’t include it on this round up because it does have some chemicals, but no aluminum.

The sunscreen monograph (the rules that govern SPF testing & labeling) was finalized in 2012/13 – one of the newer requirements is to label with the SPF test result “as written by the test lab.” Some companies view this literally (ie 47), while others round down (never up)to more recognizable numbers (ie 40). And some that rounded in the past moved to literal. Not entirely sure that’s what happened with Josie – but that’s what I would suspect. Sunscreen regulations are quite confusing!
Glad you’re still enjoying Mineral Fusion! They’ve come out with some terrific new products in the past year – their nail polish is AMAZING!

Once every couple of weeks (depending upon how frequently you wash your hair), try using 1-2 tbs of baking soda mixed into 1 cup warm water for shampoo and then 1-2 tbs of apple cider vinegar mixed into 1 cup warm water for conditioner. It sounds crazy, but it’s very healthy for your hair and removes a lot of build ups. It makes my hair feel very light, and I feel good giving it a break from regular shampoo/conditioner products. Some people only wash with this, but I like to use it just as a break every once in a while. Also, it won’t FEEL like shampoo or conditioner (no sudsing), but that’s ok– it’s still doing the trick.

You should check out the Environmental Working Group’s website (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/). They also have a new app that I’ve used a few times that, I think, has great potential.
Another thing that I’ve started to do is to switch over to natural brands that are not owned by all those big companies (Tom’s is owned by Colgate, Burt’s Bees is owned by Clorax, etc). Check out Buycott (http://www.buycott.com/) if you really want to get into the company side of it.

This is a great post and I am looking forward to trying some of the products you mentioned!
I have also been looking for deodorants and tried Tom’s of Maine (because their tooth paste is my favorite!) but it left me too stinky (Hot HOT Nor Cal summers).
I am out of face powder and looking forward to trying the mineral one you suggested. Also needed a good face sunscreen since today is supposed to be 80 degrees already!)
Here is a list of my favorites:
***Honest Company — body oil is a great combination of fruit and nut based oils that I apply to my skin while it is damp after each shower as well as to my 10 month old’s skin after bath. It leaves us both nice and soft and helps keep the eczema at bay.
***Burt’s Bees diaper ointment — the best!!! (but not safe for cloth diapers – for that I use Earth Mama Angel Baby bottom cream that is amazing as well!)
***Coconut Oil — I use this on everything! Skin, armpits after shaving, hair for deep condition, baby’s skin, in the bath for a conditioning soak.
***Honest Company dryer sheets — dryer sheets have more chemicals in them than a cigarette! I would prefer wool dryer balls but my hubby insists on a dryer sheet so this is a great compromise.
***California Baby soap — smells great and gentle on baby skin 🙂
Thanks for the great post and looking forward to trying some of your products. Would love to hear what you use for house cleaning products as well.

I second the Soapwalla deodorant cream. I tried several natural deodorants and smelled worse (!) than when I used nothing. I found Soapwalla and will never go back. In the winter, I’ve been applying jojoba oil before deodorant cream, so my skin doesn’t get too try. (Probably won’t do that in the summer though.)

I discovered Follain in the South End in Boston, and Tara, the owner, is amazing. They carry only super-green (and often local) products. When I shop there, I don’t worry about if the product is safe. Thanks to Follain, I discovered Soapwalla deodorant, which is amazing, and the Shamanuti skin care line (charcoal cleanser, seaweed toner, and face oil). Depending on what you’re used to, it isn’t cheap, but lasts a really long time.
I also use goodguide.com (and the app) when I’m shopping. They rate several different things (health = ingredients, environment = company policies, society = company policies), so sometimes I look at the specific rating (ex: health) instead of the average. They also have details behind the ratings, which is super helpful.

I just read another post about styling wavy/curly hair and it also referenced the Trader Joe’s shampoo and conditioner…http://www.maggiewhitley.com/2014/03/how-to-style-your-wavy-or-curly-hair/. I’m not sure the other products she recommends are “green,” but with two recommendations, I’m going to try the shampoo and conditioner.
I also recommend you take a look at http://www.Arbonne.com. It is a Swiss company that is new to the U.S. I learned so much from my local representative and look forward to trying more of their all-natural products soon. If you don’t have a rep in your area, let me know and I can connect you with one.

Love this post! My new favorite item that I’ve been using this spring is NOW sweet almond oil with lavender scent. I love how it makes my skin feel during this super dry time of year, and I’ll be curious to see how it does come summer. Love some of the above suggestions on deodorant, although it might take me some time to work up to trying a natural one again. I already bought some Burt’s Bees sunscreen this spring, but your sunscreen recommendations look great. Always love new ideas for natural body care.

Soapwalla makes the only natural deodorant that works. It’s a cream formula. The small container lasts forever, too. The website http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ is very helpful. Even some of the natural products rate poorly. I love the idea of a roll on lotion!

My school age dd has very sensitive skin and still uses California Baby Calendula Gentle & Soothing Shampoo & Body Wash. Other natural products I like are Jojoba Oil for hair, skin, and scalp (and great for massages too), as well as Skin Gel by Aloe Life. (Unscented- and very good for first aid, burns, rashes, bites, scrapes, etc. I buy it at Whole Foods.) I also buy Revlon Nail Enamel (Formaldehyde & Toluene free.) Trader Joe’s Vitamin E oil. I use it as my moisturizer after washing my face and I lather it on after every shower. You will feel extremely oily for about 5 minutes, but the feeling fades quickly. I also love Argan oil. I use Bioderma as a toner/make-up remover. I’ve been trying to switch over (slowly but surely) with most items I use. This is a great reference.

My guess is you probably already know about the Environmental Working Group’s website and more specifically their Cosmetics Database, but just in case you don’t, it’s a great resource: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
They test and rate cosmetic products for toxic chemicals. Not all products are on there yet, but they are always expanding and I’ve found it very helpful in my own switch to less toxic products.

I just discovered the EWG Skindeep Database last night as I was searching on my phone before bed for chemical-free cosmetics and had to come back here to mention it – though I see a couple of your readers already beat me to it.
The best part though is they have an iPhone app (search for Skindeep in the app store) that allows you to scan the barcodes of beauty products to find out what hazardous ingredients are in them. It gives each product a 1-10 rating, too, in case you haven’t memorized which chemicals are dangerous. I woke up this morning and spent 20 minutes scanning the barcodes of everything in my bathroom!

Hi, Elise! Thank you for these posts! We are slowly making the chemical-free transition, but the financial commitment is hard to swallow sometimes. Could you tell us about how long a bottle of Pangea Organics facial cream lasts you? For example, if it lasts you a month of using twice a day or if it lasts 3 months of twice a day… Thank you, again!!

I am also making small changes in my beauty products, my biggest problem was finding a good deodorant, I do not sweat much but I get very stinky. Well I finally found something that works for me, it is called “Life stinks” made by the Duggan sisters (you can find it at amazon) The lady at the apothecary store also recommended that I used a neutral soap and avoid soaps with any type of aroma or perfumes, she said that those pretty aromas mixed with my sweat could make my under arm smell stronger. I have to say this product is wonderful, I still have to see how it will work in the Summer (since our Winter has been endless) but I am very confident it will be great.
Thanks for the product recommendations 🙂
