Two weeks ago, inspired by Tara Whitney, I took my film camera out on a walk. Ellerie in the stroller, music in my earbuds, camera in my hand. We took our normal walk up the hill to the market and back down. It takes about 40 minutes round trip and kills like six birds with one stone (what an awful expression). 1) we pass the time. 2) we both get fresh air. 3) I get some exercise. 4) we pick up a few odds and ends for dinner. 5) I get to browse the goodwill bookstore next to the market. 6) I clear my head.

This day, I got to do all that plus think creatively about 24 photos. I always forget how much I love film. There is nothing instantly gratifying about it, but I find I am so much more deliberate. I frame. I take a deep breath. I shoot. I can not re-shoot. I can not adjust. I just move on. And then a week later when the prints are developed I get to remember a little bit about what was going on. It's always interesting to me to see the photos that I was excited about at the time and to see the photos that I hardly thought about (most often I find I like the latter more).

And because film is the original magic maker, there are no filters needed. It just is what it is. Rich and contrasty and sometimes a bit fuzzy. Always awesome though. I would love to get my film camera out more often this year. This roll was about documenting the plant life we see on our daily walk. Other ideas for future times: a day in the life, what's happening in our backyard garden (we're planting seedlings in the next few weeks!), corners of our home, an hour with Ellerie.

I'm inspired.

I get my film developed and prints made in Little Italy at Nelson Photo. They do an outstanding job and I love to support a small local business.

a dear friend always said – feed two birds with one seed. This is the expression I now use with my own children. Inspired walk, off to pick up my camera . . .

Very exciting! I miss film. I have an old Advantix camera with half a roll left on it. I really need to shoot the rest and see what I get! Loved the Advantix with the panorama option.

Apologies if you’ve written about this in a prior post, but which film camera do you use?

I have a Canon EOS rebel XS that I got in high school. It was my first “big” camera before digital was popular. 🙂 For these photos I just use the lens it came with 35-80mm but I would like to experiment with some different lenses soon! xx

Thanks for the recc for places to bring film in SD. Local is always best. Have a few disposable cameras I need to get developed. :0) Of course those shots are beautiful. You have a real eye for the beauty of nature. I admire that.
Also, I love that bookstore. I pick up books for my students there. I’m still shocked we haven’t bumped into each other yet! I’m up at that market a lot too. Have you been today or yesterday? Big fire Monday night. I was there! scary stuff.

You know in Alice in Wonderland, when the Mad Hatter tells Alice she’s lost her “muchness”? Every time I look at film photos, I feel like I can’t quite put my finger on what they have over digital… but they have something special. Muchness.

These are great! Taking pictures with film seems risky at this point after using a digital camera for so long. Maybe it’s time to see if I still have one kicking around somewhere though. This seems like a lot of fun!

I’m in a film photography course this semester at school and I’m loving it! It’s frustrating at times, don’t get me wrong, having to develop a picture, then re-develop because it turned out too dark or too light to too blah. But it’s really interesting because you’re right: you have to be really deliberate.

we’ve got a 1/2 shot roll of film still in the camera from our wedding in 2010. we joke about finishing it off when we have our first kid (though one isn’t on the way yet). 🙂 so fun to be inspired and reinspired by different creative mediums.

I love film too. The grain, the colours, the organic feel of a photograph, taken with a good old analog camera. Nothing beats it. I’ve done all sorts of experiments, scratching negatives, used light leaking, cheap plastic cameras (LOMO&Holga), shot with films that expired a decade ago. Great fun and beautiful results. But I must say that, artistic/sentimental value aside, digital photography is my new best friend when it comes to everyday pictures. That said, I do like to dust off the old cameras once in a while, and I still got films in the fridge 🙂

Oh, Elise, you should do “A Day in the Life of E”!! See things at her level and shoot from there. I WISH all this camera technology was around and that I had the interest when my boys were little-so many possibilities. Your photos are always so inspiring!

I am literally in there 5 out of 7 days a week. They think I am insane. AND YES. HUGE bummer about the fire. I tried to pick up milk yesterday and was shocked to see it closed.

I actually just grabbed an old film camera from Mum’s last week to try out! I’ve been thinking about trying this for awhile now… Now to figure out what sort of film I need since this camera is so old! 🙂
Thank you for the inspiration, your photos turned out amazing!
