JANpl

As mentioned at the end of 2013, I am no longer completing my Project Life album on a weekly basis. I did that for two years. I enjoyed the process and I love my albums. This year I am taking a much more relaxed approach and playing more with this project. I don't have much of a plan other than to complete at least one (and sometimes many more) spread a month.

JANdetail

The big win is that I can never be "behind" on this album. I also like that I don't have to worry about having seven horizontal 4×6 photos each week and can group photos by subject instead of date. I love that I will be under no "weekly deadlines" and will be blogging just once a month about my album.

JANdetail3

I feel like this has been said a million times before, but there is no right or wrong way to approach documenting your life. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing…just find a route that works for you then adjust, adjust, adjust until you love it. (And when you stop loving it, quit.)

JANspread5detail2

I've had fun with my spreads this month and I looking forward to continuing this project. Here's what January looks like…

JANspread1

My title page took up a front and a back side this year and so I needed just a one page layout for the right side.

JANspread1

I decided to take a bunch of photos of the three of us separately and wound up with some gems.

JANspread1detail

I used the Afterlight app to convert them to black and white and tucked them into pockets with a hello card and a floral pattern from the Sunshine Core kit.

JANspread2

Then I did a checkerboard spread of 3×4 cards and photos, alternating white and black cards with photos from the first week of January.

JANspread2left

All of these photos (and every photo in my album so far) were taken with my iPhone.

JANspread2right

The vertical iPhone photos are just perfect for this sort of layout.

ElisecripefebSCclick to enlarge.

I loved the look of the checkerboard layout and so I continued it through to the next spread.

JANspread3left

This is my Studio Calico Creative Team spread for the month and everything here is from the Sugar Rush Project Life kit. I picked 12 photos from January that represented the "TOP 12."

JANspread3right

These are random little things (like Ellerie's first card from her penpal and how I started eating quiona for breakfast) + a few big things (like how Ellerie cut her first tooth and can now sit up).

JANspread3detail3

I love this approach to "a month in review." I know I will not do this every month but it totally could be used that way.

JANspread3detail

What I really like about the checkerboard format is there is TONS of space for journaling. I wrote all over my 3×4 cards (my hand actually hurt when I was done) and got a bunch of little stories down.

JANspread4click to enlarge.

One of my goals this year is to get a photo of the three of us every single month. I am going to include them in my Project Life ablum as a full 12×12 photo.

JANspread4right

I had this one (taken with TimerCam and edited with Afterlight) printed by Persnickity Prints.

JANspread4detail

I added some simple journaling about what was going on when we took the photo to some journaling spots and layered them right on the photo.

JANspread4left

I decided to fill the opposite page with black, white and gray 3×4 cards. Mostly because if I don't start using more 3×4 cards I will likely drown in a sea of them.

JANspread5click to enlarge.

I didn't have another 12×12 photo for the backside so I just stuck a piece of patterned paper in there with a quote from a past SC kit.

JANspread5detail

Perfect quote for this album.

JANspread5right

For the next page, I used a Design B pocket page and tucked 6 3×4 horizontal photos of Ellerie and I from the past few weeks. (Some are even from December, but who's counting?).

JANdetail2

I embellished the top 4×6 pockets with 4×6 cards cut diagonally and sewed them into place. I love the mix of paper patterns and am so happy to have these photos all together.

And that's January! Thank you so much for following along. See my title page for this album here and 2013 album progress here.

product sources: Studio Calico Sugar Rush PL kit, Seafoam core kit, Midnight core kit, Sunshine Core kit, Studio Calico past project life kit pieces, We R Memory keepers 12×12 pocket page, Design F pocket page, Design B pocket page, Meredith Carty (3×4 card), Elise JOY photo calendar, Scrapbook and More flair badge & 14 tag, Two Peas hello card, staz-on ink, Pigma Micro 01 pen.

Except for that 12×12, all photos were printed at home on my Epson PictureMate Show

I love that you are doing it monthly. It’s more anticipation I think, for us as readers, and hopefully less stressful for you than a weekly format. 🙂 I decided to go with a smaller format this year, the SNAP album and 6×8 pages, and I am doing the “major” events or small specific things I want to be remembered instead of weekly also. Looking forward to the rest of your year!

I do mine in snippets as well. I didn’t have enough activities/important moments to document them weekly. But thank you for sharing your layouts, it helps me to see how many different things can be done with Project Life – it inspires me! And maybe now you will only have one album per year!

Your pages look stunning, Elise! I think I’ve written this in a comment at least twice over the course of the last two years, but to me, this post feels like a whole new level. This time: editorial design edition! Fantastic, and (again and again and again) so inspiring. Now to turn this inspiration into something tangible, huh? I’ve heard about a goal-setting class from this talented gal … 🙂

This is so good. I stopped loving project life around October, so I’ve decided to quit. I just finished up slogging through 2013 last night, and I’m not doing it for 2014. BUT this kind of makes me want to start up again, which is saying something. Only kind of, though. I think being able to print your photos at home must make a huge difference. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing your album throughout the year and enjoying project life vicariously. 🙂

I only just found your blog a little while ago via abeautifulmess(as I only just started my own), and I have now completely committed myself to reading it on a daily basis (how could I not?). I have gone through your archives and found myself in awe. Your scrapbooking, crafting, writing… all so unique and heartfelt!
Good for you for deciding to take a more relaxed approach to project life for the year ahead. All of your most special momements will still make their way in, I’m sure. Thanks for sharing & being such an inspired writer.

I’ve decided to do it in a more relaxed way this year too. I only made it through about 2 months last year trying to keep up with every week. I got so frustrated and started working a second job and just couldn’t do it all. I’ve decided that this year I’ll be realistic with myself and use all the photos I snap regularly and do recaps or pull together spreads when it feels natural. I love your monthly recap!

Love, love it! I wanted to do Project Life last year but just couldn’t keep up with it weekly. So this year I am going to try and do a little scrapbooking and project life per month. I think it will work a lot better for me.

I love your new approach to PL! I ended up doing a Shutterfly book the last couple years because it always seemed like I was “behind.” Seeing your approach makes me want to do this again without the stress of a daily/weekly spread! I could definitely do a page per month!!! Thank you for fresh inspiration and the reminder that documenting our lives doesn’t have to be done exactly like everyone else! 🙂

This approach is fabulous! Love your pages and how you’re just going with the flow of whatever moves you for the layouts. Love the simple page of patterned paper and a quote and how you used up a bunch of 3×4 cards (I completely understand that issue! LOL!). Thank you for sharing your pages and inspiring me to get outside my box for this year.

I’ve been interested in Project Life for awhile now and finally bought some supplies for it. I never planned on doing it weekly or having a theme with it. I just want to have fun with it and do it my way, updating the book whenever I saw fit or even once a month. It’s less stressful and you’re able to have more fun with it. Can’t wait to see more!

Love love love! I have also decided that this year I’m only going to be doing it monthly. It’s so time consuming and not as creativity driven weekly I’ve Noticed (at least for me, and having a full time job and trying to produce a life to put in the spreads each week) I have felt so much more relaxed and excited to get down to business with the 2014 album. I know in the past you have used persnickety prints. I love the idea of being able to do full 12×12 picture pages. Would you say the quality, price, and development time are comparable to say costco/any other photo developing store?
As always thank you so so much for sharing. Your blog brightens my day and is always such an creative inspiration!

Thank you. You just single-handedly revived my love for this project. I’m finding it very difficult to get back into PL this year. I was always, always behind in the weekly approach in years past. Especially with making sure I had enough to fill the pockets. But this…this is refreshing and creative and just awesome. So inspiring…thanks Elise!

Elise these pages are just amazing. So beautiful! I have always taken the same approach with PL and have only ever done monthly spreads. Sometimes it’s only a couple of pages, sometimes a lot more. I have only ever used design A pocket pages for our family album but seeing your pages makes me want to try other designs. Although, i have always felt funny about how it would look 🙂
    thanks for sharing your work.

It was great to read your thoughts on your past and future experiences with Project Life! I did the “traditional” weekly approach to Project Life in 2013, and as much fun as I had with it (and in fact am still having with it as I finish up some weeks), I realized it was not a good fit for me and what/how I want to scrapbook. So I’m not sure whether Project Life will have a role in my scrapbooking from this point forward…but I’m thrilled that I tried.
    Happy 2014 to you!! =)

Wow, wow, and wow! You certainly did a bunch of wonderful pages to cover the month – you go! I’m lovin’ that there is no right or wrong way to document life because this year I’ve gone super simple. Lots of white and black, all digital (I’m all digital for PL), few embellishments, haven’t purchased any kits this year (but that isn’t off the table) because I still have digital Seafoam and Midnight; and each week has only taken me about 2 hours max to complete. Closing the album of 2013 filled with 52 weeks of digital pages was such an amazing feeling that I just couldn’t not continue PL into 2014.

I attempted the week at a glance approach last year and couldn’t keep it up all year-I just found it too time consuming. Love how the monthly approach has given you a sense of freedom and room/time to play with it. The top 12 idea is great too, could totally see me doing that. Thanks for the inspiration !!

Thanks for the reminder that there’s no right or wrong way to do any sort of memory keeping. I don’t do Project Life but I do layouts, journaling and keep a very informal diary for One Little Word. And I still think that picture of Ellerie looking at the other camera with the self timer while you’re trying to take her pic is so cute! I also like the diagonal cutting and stitching details. Very inspiring. Thanks. Michelle t

Hi Elise! I love seeing your PL posts! I am kind of a newb, so I hope this isn’t a dumb question, but would you be willing to share where you’re finding/ordering your page protectors from? I legitimately can’t even track down some of the ones I’ve seen you (and others) share (ie: that “checkerboard” page… is it real/just a myth/did you sew it yourself from a regular 12×12? I am struggling to find page protectors in stock anywhere, and it’s so frustrating.
