Christmascollage

I saw this grid frame* on Pinterest and immediately a light bulb flashed. This is the ideal frame for a photo progression collage. You know the ones – one frame, multiple holes, photos from repeating years to show growth and change. My parents have one with photos of all the houses that we have lived in. They also have one with my brother and me in our Halloween costumes and us on Santa’s lap. The frames get brought out every year with the holiday decorations and were always my favorite growing up.

I was so thrilled to find my own version in such a clean and simple style. I plan on filling it with Christmas photos each year starting this year. The original plan was to put photos from our first three years of marriage in but after some digging (in the blog archives), I found that my holiday photo taking skills have seriously lacked the past few years. (I blame Paul being deployed for one Christmas and me not doing Project Life the year before that.) Instead of framing some not great photos or having to leave 2011 blank, I’m just going to start with the Ellerie years and call it good.

To fill the empty slots in the meantime, I choose favorite Christmas papers – some are old from Hambly and American Crafts, others are from this year’s Studio Calico December Daily kit*. I cut my papers down to 4×4 and added just a few embellishments. It’s going to be fun to add photos each year, but I actually love how this looks as just a paper collage too.

It’s crazy to think about 16 years from now when this frame is full of photos and not patterned papers. So much can and will change. I get sentimental in advance just thinking about it. I’ll pull out that last paper, stick in a photo and shake my head over how fast time flew while similtaneously trying to pour myself a glass of wine and squeezing my teenager(s) to pieces.

Perfection. So excited to start this! Thanks for the inspiration. We have a new little one as well, and love the idea of documenting the Piper years this way. Now I just have to decide– photos with Santa or in front of the tree…

FYI – They have a very similar frame made by Umbra for about the same price since this one looks as though it is sold out!

Love your idea of removing the papers and adding photos each year for the next 16 years but I think if I were to do this, although it’s too late for me since my children are grown, I would leave in some of the papers for decoration (they’re really pretty) and just add photos to say…maybe 12 of the squares then create a new frame for the next 12 years. Just my opinion! 😉 Great idea! Have fun with it!

I know.. that’s the tricky part. I think I’ll just pick my favorite photo from the holiday season regardless of where we are…

Kind of off topic (but then again, kind of on topic, since both are Christmas-y subjects) but I have a question for you (and any of your readers who might like to chime in):
How do you let family members know that it’s okay to not buy presents for you (so they can save their money for things they need, especially since they’re short on money) at Christmas? I don’t want to just say: don’t buy gifts – save your money, since you don’t have much. Well, that’s basically what I mean, but I don’t want to say it that way. So, anyone have ideas of a nice way to word it?
P.S. This progression collage is so neat! And what Carol said about leaving the papers in – I had the thought that one could do BOTH: leave the papers in as a background for the photos. 🙂

My parents used to do something like this with their Christmas cards every year… I think partly to keep record and see how we changed from year to year, but mostly so they didn’t end up sending out the same cards haha.

My mind is currently boggling at the idea of Ellerie as a 16 year old – having a teenager is one of the scariest things I can imagine right now 🙂
Love this idea, and I love that you’re continuing on one of your parents traditions too

I just wanted to say what a joy it is to see photos of Ellerie. As a mother of two teenagers, it brings back many memories and I find myself looking at the old baby and toddler photos more and more.
I am interested to see how your life unfolds as you add more babies and how you will tackle the piles of artwork they bring home from school. But I have to say you have a good start in being organized and I wish I was so organized when my kids were small. It’s more difficult to get those memories back when you are looking at them from the future. I do what I can and I love this idea for Christmas photos. It’s compact but very memorable.

I searched high and low for this frame and I found it with the name Umbra Gridart. . .It was out of stock everywhere, but there were a couple of places where you could put your e-mail and they’ll notify you when they are back in stock.
I was also looking for other similar frames, with no luck. . .Fortunately I was able to get 2 of these from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Umbra-Gridart-16-Opening-Picture-Frame/dp/B00EV5C36O/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top) the only place where they were in stock. . .

Probably needs to be done eArlier in the year and have an open discussion about it – as a family of grown ups we now buy for only the. Hidden and not our siblings ) or play the $10 gift game 🙂 lots of ways to nicely let people know – just depends on the make up of your family really
    Good luck
