Candleholder

So remember when I shared this awesome candle holder from A Subtle Revelry?

Candleholder2

I finally made my own version. I'm a little annoyed at myself that it took so long, this was easier than I thought it would be. My "challenge" was that I wanted the candles to be a bit larger than normal birthday candles and I wasn't sure where to find them…until Target got their holiday stuff out. They're selling multi-colored Menorah candles this year that were exactly the size I envisioned.

I found a 3×3 by 36 inch piece of poplar at Lowe's that worked perfectly for our long table. I drilled into it with the largest drill bit we had and then stained it. My candles are a bit bigger than the holes I created, but since they're soft wax, it wasn't that hard to twist them into place.

What will I do with this candle holder, you ask? My plan is to bring it out with multi-colored candles for birthday dinners (I love that I get to make up all sorts of things now and Ellerie will just think they're tradition – done this way since the beginning of time) and maybe stick some white candles in there for holiday feasts.

I have no idea why I was so obsessed with completing this project, but I just love it.

And again… project inspiration came from this awesome post on A Subtle Revelry.

    Perfect for the holidays!
It turned out very nicely. Do the candles drip much or do they pretty much burn straight down?

What a FANTASTIC idea and you are starting your “own” traditions!

When I had them lit to take the photos they seemed to burn straight down. They are thin though, so their burn life is short, I imagine. This might be the sort of thing we have to light at the beginning of the meal and/or eat very quickly. 🙂

I’m smiling at your “since the beginning of time” traditions. Those are the best and the kids love them. 🙂 We hang a “Happy Birthday” bunting whenever we celebrate a birthday. It’s just what we do. And I love it.
Great job on the candle holder!

You should know I went to Target yesterday and bought those candles. I love them! My little baby boy turns ONE this weekend so I’m going to make this to put on our brand new kitchen table (well new to us. my husband just refurbished it 🙂 to use as part of the celebration! Thanks for sharing this project.

This is lovely! I’m planning to make something similar for birthday celebrations with 10 candle holders. We’ll light one candle for each year through 10, at 11 we will light one special candle that represents “10” white candle plus one colored candle to equal 11, and so on through 19. Hope that makes sense! You might be interested to check out Waldorf birthday rings and the Waldorf traditions around birthdays, I think I’ll borrow from them. The beeswax birthday candles for the Waldorf birthday ring might be the right size candles for you when/if you need extra.
