Run2

When I was thirteen, I babysat a ton. Mostly for young kids, but occasionally for toddlers and for one summer, a newborn. The mom hired me to come to her house three mornings a week and watch her brand new baby for just an hour while she went to the gym. At thirteen, I didn't get it. I was thrilled to hold a tiny baby while he slept, but it seemed silly for her to pay me just so she could exercise.

Fast-forward 15 years and OH MAN, do I understand.

I did not think at all about how hard it would be to exercise once the baby arrived. First there was the necessary healing time which needed to be respected, of course. And then there was the lack of energy. And then there's the fact that you can't just leave the kiddo at home while you race around the neighborhood. And, of course, there are feeding and nap schedules to try to coordinate.

I really missed moving in the early weeks. I remember towards the end of my pregnancy having dreams about running and I was anxious to get get back to it. On Ellerie's six week birthday, after Paul got home from work, I went for my first run since December 31st. It was very slow and a bit jiggly. But it was a great run. I made a short one mile loop and felt my mind un-fog as my feet hit the pavement. It was a healthy reminder that I run not to fit into my jeans, but to have some time to myself and get my heart pumping fast.

Run

Since that run, I have worked very hard to fit movement into our schedule. I say "our" because it's a family effort, for sure. Paul and I take turns getting in a quick run after he gets home from work. Typically, I am dressed and ready to go with a podcast queued when he walks in the door and then when I get home, he gets out. Ellerie is big enough now to be pushed in the stroller while one of us jogs behind so that will make things easier for sure.

We have made a point to get out running together a few times when we have family here to watch the baby and I cherish those mornings. We used to run a lot with each other and having some of our old "Elise & Paul" time is special and awesome. Plus, Paul's a great motivator. I run faster and for longer when he's by my side. We had planned on participating in a 10k last weekend, but sadly, it was canceled. Hopefully we can find another one soon.

Yoga

I also found a yoga class that I love that's not too far from the house. Getting the hour of stretching and strengthening in is nice, but connecting briefly with other mamas and the fantastic teacher is wonderful. It's a baby friendly class, which means Ellerie lays on the floor in front of the mat and I can stop at any time to feed her, comfort her, etc. The practice is often disrupted, but it's still more involved than something I would be doing at home.

Yoga2

It's so worth it to me to get out of the house and commit to this each week – even when it means I alter Ellerie's nap "schedule" and have to drive around looking for street parking. Like nearly all exercise, I never regret going after class is over.

Walk

We're learning daily how to make things work as parents and people. Everything now takes more planning and sometimes more effort than it did before. But we're working on it and finding it gets easier as we settle into our groove.

Run

The clothes I am wearing in this post were provided by Albion Fit. They offered to send me a few items in exchange for sharing here and I thought this would be a great fit (no pun intended). I have been wearing the breathe freely tank on my runs and I love it because unlike so many of my running shirts, it's loose and doesn't ride up. The lounge crops and illusion capris are both flattering and have become favorites for yoga classes or around the house wear. Albion Fit is generously offering $20 off any $50 or more purchase with code enjoyit20 through 11/9/13.

ps. ellerie's romper is baby gap and these are similar to my running shoes. you can see all my posts about running here.

Looooove Albion Fit, cannot wait to get more of their stuff! As a nanny who is gone working and commuting from 7-7 most days, I’ve found that exercising with the babies is the only way I get it in during the week. I try and walk/run with the stroller at least 15 miles a week, and setting a goal for myself has been so helpful! Not at all the same/as challenging as being a mom (I do have my nights and weekends to myself) but it has definitely changed my view on finding time to exercise!

How right you are, exercising with a young family can be a challenge but it’s definitely worth it, sometimes it’s about having that “me time” as much as the exercise. We’re lucky to have a gym with child care facilities and it has definitely been a life saving thing for me.

Oh yes… getting Ellerie out in the stroller more is pretty much the only way I am going to keep moving – especially now that it will be getting dark so early. 🙂

We are currently dealing with this situation with baby #4. My husband and I were both running quite a bit after #3 was born but haven’t been able to get back to a good routine/schedule yet. I find the only way I can be sure it gets done is to get up at 6 am and do it but it’s hard to always get up that early. Good for you for making it a priority.

also, yes it’s totally mental for both of us rather than for what we look like.

Since my son became a toddler I’ve had to give up trying to do yoga when he is about; he thinks I’m trying to play so I just end up being jumped on! ‘Mummy are you pretending to be my horse?’ they are so funny.

Yes! Exercise takes so much more effort with a baby in your life, but it’s definitely worth the effort.
We have a BOB too, but still use a conversion kit to hold the Chico car seat. I’m eager to just put her in the stroller on her own. She’s got pretty great head control but my sister in law says that she didn’t use the BOB without the car seat conversion kit until her baby was a year old.
Alice is almost 6 months and has awesome head control these days so I’m sure it’d be alright…but you know, as a mama I get nervous! (She’s not able to sit up by herself quite yet).
Ellerie is a little younger than my daughter, but obviously she’s nice and secure in the BOB?

I drop my kids (3,5 and 1) off at the YMCA nursery. This works really well, they are entertained, the stuff is so nice to them and I have my time to exercise. We started doing this really early, so they get used to it that Mommy or daddy sometimes drop them off somewhere.

Thanks for the discount code! I just ordered an outfit. At 6 months postpartum it definitely isn’t as easy to get out and move as it used to be. But I do manage to squeeze in 1-2 Pilates classes a week and I’m trying to be more consistent with the jogging stroller.
I know it’s a bit of a drive for you, but there’s a great 10k in Dana Point on Thanksgiving called The Turkey Trot. I’ll be participating with a stroller this year.

Your enthusiasm and excitment about excerise is intoxicating. I know it’s good. I just need to make the time. I feel like I would really like running the handful of times I started to we’re amazing I just lacked the dedication and stopped. I also tried yoga twice and it was also riveting and engaging and I liked it a lot. Sadly the only time I could go to a class was 6:15 am. and I’m not a morning person. Do you have any recommendations for any YouTube yoga videos, or DVDs I should look into I feel if i were to do it at home id be more into waking up early?

I’m so glad you’ve been able to get back to running. I’ve been out of my walking routine for almost two weeks now and I miss it. I miss having that time to clear my head and get out in the fresh air. I’m hoping to get back to it tomorrow or Friday, though, once I’m settled in my new apartment.

I’m trying to find my rhythm too! I’m finding it pretty tough because I work away from the house full time and have a commute plus have to fit in extra pump sessions at home and my 7 month old does not sleep through the night. Excuses, excuses I know! But trying my hardest. I was at spin class through the very end of my pregnancy; when I made it to a class recently, first time in awhile, and had 45 minutes to work out hard in a class I loved I almost cried, it was like reconnecting with a part of myself that I hadn’t been in touch with. Exercising is such an important part of my identity not to mention stress release. I think I need to find ways to take my son in the jogging stroller more. Thank you for sharing how you’re making it work – or trying to!

My son also had great head control and I started jogging with him in the BOB probably around 5 months or a little after. You could take her in the BOB in the regular seat just for walks to see how she seems. The seat is a little bit reclined and I found that he didn’t move around much, although he always has been on the longer side. Good luck getting back into it! I think the BOB recommends not jogging with them until 6 months and I would think they would make the recommendations conservative. But definitely have to follow your mama instinct!

Yay, you! I love running, barre, and yoga, and it’s inspiring that a new mama like you has remained committed! And I’ve never heard of Albion – I know you used to wear a lot of Lululemon gear – how do you feel like it compares? I might have to check it out! Thanks, Elise!

we chatted via email about this, but for anyone else.. I saw online that the bob is designed for kiddos over 12 lbs. We waited until Ellerie was closer to 14 (with good head control) and still have not jogged with it yet. 🙂

I still love the lululemon run crops, for sure. I’d say the bottoms are similar. All of my lulu tops are tight and not so awesome yet post baby. 😉 I love the loose fitting tank from albion. Hope that helps! 🙂

You are so inspiring and your babysitting story is a lot like mine. Why in the world would she want to go to the gym. Fast forward and we lived on base where there was no childcare. I had to get creative. We went on lots of walks and I did pull-up and push ups at the park with the kids. My jogging stroller was the best splurge! I’m glad that you and Paul have gotten a groove. It took my husband and me a long time to figure out taking a little bit of time away from each other for our health was a good thing. My kids are older now and we work out at home. He gets home from work and starts right then. The kids and I expect it now and we’re all happier and feeling better. I love that my kids are seeing me take care of myself and they are fully aware that it is for them as well. Your little one will feel that way about you too!

Hey! That’s my neck of the woods! I used to take my boys for a walk around that lake at least once a week before my youngest (16mo.) decided he didn’t want to be in the stroller anymore.
If your Yoga place is kind of near that lake, would you mind sharing the info for it? I have yet to find a nearby yoga studio that is ok with kids.
