Podcasts

I mentioned last week that I have been listening to podcasts while walking with Ellerie around the neighborhood. I love it because I feel like I'm getting exercise, Ellerie is getting fresh air and I'm able to learn something interesting at the same time. Recently, I have been really enjoying the Another Mother Runner podcast. I haven't listened to it in awhile but I also really like Dishing up Nutrition. If you are a scrapbooker, I am sure you've heard of Paperclipping Roundtable. I have been a guest on that one a few times and enjoy it as well. I'm always hearing good things about This American Life, Simple Mom and Joy the Baker, but have yet to get into those three.

I would love to hear in the comments what you love to listen to!

And though it seems like there are endless options of podcasts available, I am really interested in starting my own. (Five or so years late to the party, I know.) It was sort of whim when I threw it out on twitter, but I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Ideally, I'd love to chat weekly or bi-weekly about motivation, creativity, making stuff, goal-setting and whatever else comes up. I plan on running through my Rolodex of creative friends and acquaintances as guest hosts, and then building a larger Rolodex of interesting people to share their thoughts. We'll hear from letterpressers, food bloggers, authors, artists, photographers, gardeners, florists, marathoners, inventors, small business owners, moms, dads and more.

This is not a "get-rich quick" or even a "get-rich slow" scheme. It's more of a "Dude, I really want to make this happen" scheme. But I need a little help to get started. If you (or someone you know) can help me launch a podcast (tell me the equipment I need to buy, how to create the recordings, how to make it work with guests, how to upload to iTunes, etc.) please shoot me an email. I am more than willing to pay for assistance and guidance from someone who knows what they are doing. I want to get this rolling soon and know it would be easier if I had some help that isn't just Google.

So yes! Share your favorite podcasts! Email me (elise.blahaATgmail.com) if you know how to start one!

Pat Flynn who runs the Smart Passive Income podcast did a huge tutorial on how to start a podcast. It’s: http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/how-to-start-a-podcast-podcasting-tutorial/
I would love to hear one from you! Some faves are Joy the Baker, Simple Mom, Wait Wait Don’t tell Me, Splendid Table, Beyond the To Do List and You Bet Your Garden. I’m going to look up these others…good post!
I wish I knew more about how to podcast because I would love to help you!

Radiolab! Radiolab! It’s the best. It’s such a good balance of ‘oh, cool, science’ and ‘wow – this story is so powerful’ and awesome audio mixing.
That, obviously, is my favorite. I also enjoy ‘Stuff You Missed in History Class’ and the ‘Pop Culture Happy Hour’. Love podcasts so much.

Try Podcast Answer Man (site and podcast) for all the hows/tips/what to do to launch.
I’m actually toying with the same idea, so let me know if I can help at all.

Anything NPR puts out. My ex and I used to plan our Sunday mornings so we could listen to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. I also like Click and Clack – it’s a car show, but they’re pretty funny.

I second the above suggestion of “The Longest Shortest Time”. I also really love “The Dinner Party Download”, “Books on the Nightstand”, and “NPR: Books Podcast”. I love the Instacast app for downloading new episodes each week.

It looks super thorough and he’s a pretty honest and legit kinda guy, plus in the tutorial he links to some other super awesome people from whom you can learn more about podcasting. πŸ™‚

I’m working on developing a podcast too! I’m super excited about it; it seems like a fun project and I love learning new things. But I’m fumbling and learning as I go too so I can’t be your podcast mentor. I found a helpful article on How Stuff Works about how to make a podcast.
I listen to many that other readers have mentioned by weekly rotation are:
    Spilled Milk (hilarious!)
    Pop Culture Happy Hour
    Joy the Baker Podcast
    This American Life
    Radio Lab
    Stuff You Should Know
    Simple Mom Podcast
I love podcasts, especially while I’m cooking in the kitchen. Excited to check out many of these that others have mentioned.

All you need a microphone (or be super fancy and get a headset) and a basic audio editing program – you can do it in GarageBand. The feed part with itunes is a little more technical but there’s great info on the apple page.
I would totally listen. I listen to PRT, The Digi Show, and Inspired to Action (a motherhood podcast). I love what everyone has shared so far.

If I hadn’t been browsing app magazines at WHSmiths I would never have heard of The Daily Digi App. And if I hadn’t downloaded the Daily Digi App I’d never have started listening to The Digi Show Podcast. And if I hadn’t started listening to the Digi Show I’d never have heard of Project Life, Pinterest, Feedly or any one of the other game changers that have changed how I live my life over the last year. And if I’d never heard of Project Life I wouldn’t have found your blog, which would be a travesty. And if I’d never found your blog I don’t think I’d have been inspired to start my own. So what this overlong comment is trying to say is: I am grateful for newsagents, apps, podcasts, anything that introduces me to something new. And as you’ve clearly showed an aptitude for trend setting, I’m sure a podcast from you would be awesome!

Oh and since you asked for Podcast recommendations, my constant companions for housework, commuting and cooking are The Digi Show, Paperclipping, Improve Photography, CaptureYour365 and, for laughing until I cry, BBC Radio 4 Friday Night Comedy (the News Quiz seasons are better than the Now Show but both are great)

Plus you need to get into The Vinyl Cafe with Stuart McLean (he’s the most amazing storyteller) and The Naked Scientists are pretty awesome to listen to too. πŸ™‚ Sunday

I wrote you earlier today and it didn’t go through. Boo. I used to do the podcasts for my church so long ago and I can’t remember exactly what I did. But when it is set up, it’s easy to get it onto iTunes. You just set it up and link it back and it will update automatically. My husband does them for our current church but it’s automatically a plugin for the website. BUT he said you can record at your computer or record through something we use called a zoom h4n. Hope that’s helpful. Good luck!

Having watched your vids, and being sensitive to vocal variations (abrasive vs. calming), I would LOVE to listen to a podcast you created! The Roundtable is pretty much the only podcast I’m loyal to (I listened to the first one when it first aired!), but I just got my first smart phone this summer (I know, LAME), and am enjoying discovering new podcasts now. I’ll be checking out the ones other commenters suggested for sure!

Manic Mommies (you’d probably need to start with back episodes when their kids were infants). Also Freakonomics, which I second from a previous post recommendation.
And I would listen to an Elise Blaha Cripe podcast. πŸ™‚ (The Manic Mommies are ready to hang it up–offer to replace them!!)

I cannot recommend Radiolab enough. It’s basically my favorite show available in any format–“a show about curiosity. Where sound illuminates ideas, and the boundaries blur between science, philosophy, and human experience.” Plus, it is so well-researched and produced it blows my mind. 23 Weeks, 6 Days is an incredible episode. My favorite is probably Dark Side of the Earth.
It’s also hard to go wrong with This American Life, and the Ted Radio Hour is really great–it brings together a handful of Ted Talks around a particular theme. WTF with Marc Maron can be interesting. He talks to a lot of creative types about their lives, their craft, etc.
    Enjoy!

What a great idea, I bet you’d be great! I wanted to suggest an awesome, but not totally educational podcast. I love This American Life and Fresh Air…..but I also really love podcasts that talk about my favorite tv show. Afterbuzztv.com has a ton of after shows, and robhasapodcast.com has a bunch for reality shows, Breaking Bad and Walking Dead. Kind of nerdy, but I love them!
