Podcasts

I mentioned last week that I have been listening to podcasts while walking with Ellerie around the neighborhood. I love it because I feel like I'm getting exercise, Ellerie is getting fresh air and I'm able to learn something interesting at the same time. Recently, I have been really enjoying the Another Mother Runner podcast. I haven't listened to it in awhile but I also really like Dishing up Nutrition. If you are a scrapbooker, I am sure you've heard of Paperclipping Roundtable. I have been a guest on that one a few times and enjoy it as well. I'm always hearing good things about This American Life, Simple Mom and Joy the Baker, but have yet to get into those three.

I would love to hear in the comments what you love to listen to!

And though it seems like there are endless options of podcasts available, I am really interested in starting my own. (Five or so years late to the party, I know.) It was sort of whim when I threw it out on twitter, but I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Ideally, I'd love to chat weekly or bi-weekly about motivation, creativity, making stuff, goal-setting and whatever else comes up. I plan on running through my Rolodex of creative friends and acquaintances as guest hosts, and then building a larger Rolodex of interesting people to share their thoughts. We'll hear from letterpressers, food bloggers, authors, artists, photographers, gardeners, florists, marathoners, inventors, small business owners, moms, dads and more.

This is not a "get-rich quick" or even a "get-rich slow" scheme. It's more of a "Dude, I really want to make this happen" scheme. But I need a little help to get started. If you (or someone you know) can help me launch a podcast (tell me the equipment I need to buy, how to create the recordings, how to make it work with guests, how to upload to iTunes, etc.) please shoot me an email. I am more than willing to pay for assistance and guidance from someone who knows what they are doing. I want to get this rolling soon and know it would be easier if I had some help that isn't just Google.

So yes! Share your favorite podcasts! Email me (elise.blahaATgmail.com) if you know how to start one!

I love Freakonomics’ Podcast. I am really into crafting, but their podcat is my favorite. And it is the only one I really liste to, probably because they also have transcripts, so when I can’t make it to listen, at least I can read it. And I need transcripts, because I don’t pay attention to what I listen if I am multitasking. But I’ll listen to yours, transcripts or not, because I’m your fan.
I’d love to help you, if I knew something about it…

Since you like gardening I’d suggest these: A Way To Garden with Margaret Roach, Ken Druse Real Dirt, All Things Plants, Chicken Thistle Coop-Cast, and We Dig Plants. For fitness, I like Rich Roll and Vinnie Tortorich. There’s also Run Barefoot Girl, too.
And if you did a podcast it would totally be on my list of podcasts to listen to. šŸ™‚

I used to do a weekly music podcast featuring local bands when I worked for the newspaper. It was so much fun (to do the interviews and hear the end result.)
I’m a fan of NPR shows. The Wait! Wait! Don’t Tell Me podcast is always fun and we love listening to them on road trips. (I also listen to the Another Mother Runner podcasts when I run – sometimes. I haven’t been listening to anything while running recently.)

Podcasts and Audiobooks are one of my most favourite things. Great for commuting, going to sleep to, and to help ease the pain of cleaning the house.
    My favourites (in order):
    – This American Life (download it – you won’t look back)
    – Selected Shorts (great for when you don’t have a great book, or the time to read but you are keen for a short fiction fix)
    – Conversations with Richard Fidler (it’s Australian and awesome. Lots of varied conversations with amazing people who have done, seen, and heard things that you couldn’t imagine).
Would love to hear an Elise podcast.

I go through phases of either listening to several or listening to none. I’m in the second phase right now, but my husband just went off for his first day of work, so I see myself getting bored of silence and music soon. WHen I do listen, I enjoy Here’s The Thing with ALec Baldwin, Simple Mom, After The Jump, Freakanomics, and This American LIfe. I’m sure I’d love yours- I’m glad you’re looking into this! šŸ™‚

I don’t know anything about podcasts but over the summer I got tired of listening to music on my runs so I started listening to Two Gomers Run a Half Marathon. It’s pretty hilarious – two friends living in different parts of the country document their journey from being non-runners to running a half. They have a ton of episodes but I started at the beginning.
I would love to listen to whatever you came up with!

So I was having the same thought recently–some of my favorite podcasts have gone by the wayside and I thought hey, I want to start one! but then I realized that while I really do want to do that I can’t do everything and it’s not my top priority. All that to say HOORAY your podcast sounds perfect so now I don’t have to do it at all!
Most of my favorite listens have been mentioned (many good NPR shows) but I personally love interview format shows with interesting guests especially around creativity. Craftsanity was my hands down favorite for years (Jennifer has a really personable interview style I love). She started from scratch in the early days of podcasting and is a real friend of the internet craft community so I’d suggest reaching out to her for tips/help maybe even second hand equipment? (if she’d really done podcasting…)
My recent favorite is The Good Life Project (on iTunes). State of the ReUnion is pretty good. And I’m trying to listed to American Quilting something or other but I just don’t love the format 😦
Finally, can I put in a plug for NON video podcasting? The whole point for me is to listen while doing laundry/sewing/running so I can’t watch a video! I will listen to podcasts that have a video option (TED, Good Life Project) but I don’t like feeling like I”m missing something.
Whew, sorry for the long comment šŸ™‚

I am so excited for you! I will most definite listen if you launch a podcast. I’m always looking for new podcasts to listen to on my commute to and from work. One 1/2 show using gets me to work. Simple Mom and Joy the Baker are great, if you love listening to two friends chatting. I love Freakonomic podcast as well. It’s always insightful and I feel like not too many people talk about enjoying that one. I also listen to Kat Lee’s How They Blog (it’s fairly new) and Inspired to Action is a mommy podcast, I only listen to the ones that might apply to me, because I’m not a mommy yet. I also listen to Marriage Today with Jimmy & Karen (this one is fairly new to me, so we’ll see how long I listen for).
Michael Hyatt has a podcast, I don’t always listen to every episode he puts out but he has recommended the Cliff Ravenscraft, The Podcast Answerman.

I work for an NPR affiliate and sit at a desk all day, so podcasts are pretty much my life šŸ™‚
You’ve probably got enough recommendations to convince you This American Life is a must. Based on a somewhat superficial understanding of your interests and personality, I’d recommend Fresh Air (Terry Gross is the QUEEN of interviewing)and 99% Invisible. I recommend Slate’s Political Gabfest to EVERYONE because it’s funny and insightful and probably my current favorite podcast. Radiowest might be good inspiration for the type of podcast you want to do as well.
Can’t wait to hear what you put out!
