NEWBORN

I wanted to share some of the things that we used nearly every day these past two months. It's so easy to get overwhelmed with options pre-baby and you have no idea what will really work and what is a waste of money**. I pretty much just bought what looked good and had great reviews before Ellerie came and then was pleasantly surprised with the stuff below. Everything here I would highly recommend. I starred the items that would be a great gift for a new mama.

*aden & anais swaddle blankets – we have eight of these. They are super lightweight and perfect for wrapping Ellerie up, throwing over her in the carseat, laying down on a public restroom changing table, etc. Love the cute animals and the lightweight texture. We also use Aden & Anais changing pad covers (and have this changing pad).

*summer infant swaddleme blankets – Ellerie sleeps swaddled at night (and has been sleeping through since seven weeks old). We love the velcro on these and the size S-M are still holding her tightly all night long. (She is currently almost 13lbs.) As long as she continues to sleep well in the swaddle, we'll continue to use them but will upgrade to the large size.

*gerber flatfold diapers – I have twenty of these and use them as burb clothes. They are a good size, inexpensive, soft and super absorbent.

badger baby balm – we used this to fight cradle cap and to keep diaper rash from appearing when she was wearing disposable diapers. I love that it's natural and safe for baby.

bumGenius elemental one-size cloth diapers – we transitioned to cloth diapers during the days at around six weeks. She is still in a disposable at night. Paul and I have both been impressed with how easy they are to use and wash. We have 19 (and I am thrilled with that number). So far I have found that that sun bleaches any stains and we plan on using this diaper sprayer down the line when we transition to solid foods and have more waste to get rid of. Obviously we've got years to go, but I am happy we started using these. Huge up-front expense, but worth it in the long run.

charlie's soap laundry powder – this is safe for cloth diaper laundry and I use it for everything now.

BabyGanics wipes – we have been using these since she came home from the hospital and we're diaper rash free. Love that I can use them on her hands and face too without worrying about harsh chemicals.

*mustela newborn baby wash – soap free, smells amazing, safe for newborns. We use this and the PUJ tub for bathing Ellerie in the kitchen sink. I totally recommend the PUJ tub.

*bowron BabyCare shorn lambskin – we put Ellerie down on this so she is part of the action without needing to be held (it's often laid on top of a coffee table). It's plush, comfy and she seems to like it.

fisher price bouncer chair – like idiots, we waited almost a month to see if we'd need a chair. I should have bought this so much earlier. Ellerie likes the vibration and is content to stay awake or fall asleep in this. We often sit her up in this while we're making or eating dinner. I usually have her in it when I am working in my office (like right now as I type this post).

medela pump in style advanced breast pump – I have ended up using this so much more than expected since we have had some trouble with breastfeeding. I'm totally pleased with it and use it multiple times a day. I also have the manual pump for easy travel or on the go use and I recommend that too.

boon lawn countertop drying rack – I didn't know that we would need this so early but since I am pumping and bottle feeding often, this has come in handy for us.

gilligan & o'malley nursing bras – I have four of these in different patterns and have lived in them. I recommend buying two sizes up from your normal bra size. At least. Whoever said your boobs are at their final size the last week of pregnancy and to buy bras then is out of their mind.

**newborn thru at least 6 month size pjs and dresses were a waste for us. Ellerie sleeps swaddled and so underneath the swaddle she wears just a onesie. And she was a long baby – 21 inches – so dresses look like shirts on her these days. She wears a lot of rompers which is rad because I love a cute romper.

heads up – links throughout are referral links. If you purchase through them, I recieve a small commission.

I love seeing reviews of baby things. Everything works so differently for everyone, but it’s good to have those options. We are trying to get pregnant so I’ll be keeping these fresh in my mind! 🙂

We, too, waited like idiots to see if we needed a chair (love your phrasing here). For months. And did not buy one. Crazy! I would get one immediately for a second babe. All. that. carrying.
What about your solly sling? Do you use it often? It looks super good and I’d be interested to hear your review, if you care to share 🙂

    Hey Elise,
I’m sure this will so helpful for expectant mamas. When our son was born swadddling saved my life. Back then (4 years) you couldn’t buy hook and loop swaddling blankets in the UK so I have to buy them from an ebay seller in the US. He was in pink and purple butterfly swaddles for months but I didn’t care because we finally GOT SOME SLEEP!
Also have you considered using cloth baby wipes? We use them and just toss them in with the nappies(diapers) to be washed, no chemicals and no landfill.

That’s how long my niece was and she continued to be tall. Footed PJs were a waste because she got so little use out if hem before they became small. Buy the two piece ones for fall/winter. Our must have baby item for her was a boppy. She loved laying on it as a baby and it was a nice protection when she was just starting to sit up. She also used it for a pillow in the living room until she was about two.

Totally agree with the Aden + Anais blankets. We got them as a gift, and now they’re my go-to for pregnant mama gifts.
The lambskin is so interesting!!! I’ve had two babes and no one has mentioned that. Where did you hear about it?

I’m a new mama as well and I think you’re spot on with your suggestions. We have most of these items as well and could not survive without them. (My little guy is in that exact bouncy seat as I type!) I would note however, that we have gotten a ton of use out of footed pjs with my 2 month old. He too sleeps swaddled in a onsie, but we ended up buying a few jammies to keep him warm on cooler days. When we brought him home in July, it was unseasonably cool and the little wiggler wouldn’t keep socks on his little toes…the footed jammies turned out to be the perfect little outfit for the day.
    Thanks for sharing.

Elise, thanks so much for this!
We are expecting twins and I find it quite hard to decide what to buy. Especially that we will have two sets of many things and it is better not to waste too much on unused items..
I think I remember you have and ergobaby, any thoughts on that?

Wool diaper covers were our solution for overnight cloth diapering. It sounds like it would be weird and too hot, but surprisingly it isn’t! You can put one right over a bumgenius. Sloomb is a popular brand but a bit pricey. I sent 100% wool thrift store sweaters to bundles of Joy on etsy who sewed them into a cover for me. I bet you could even make your own!

We love our bumgenius dipes too! You may already have come across this but over time ammonia from the urine can build up in the diapers. This happened with us (even though we were using a cloth diaper detergent, Rocking Green) and it caused my son to get an ammonia rash, which the ped won’t necessarily recommend b/c they aren’t as used to seeing cloth. If your dipes start smelling like ammonia it is time for a strip, you can use Rocking Green Funk Rock or a detergent called RLR. Just wanted to share because it kind of caught us off guard, it took a couple of months for the ammonia to build up. We also have very hard water so that may be a cause. Glad you are loving cloth…now I’m one of those mamas who talks your ear off if someone says “Nice diapers.” 🙂

I am cracking up over the breast size comment. With my first, I went from an A pre-baby to a B pregnant to a DD nursing (I looked ridiculous) and back again weaning. With number two, I never left a B until he was weaned. So saving my carefully tended nursing bras was a waste too. Wish some of these items were around a couple of years ago! When I had mine, the only cloth diapers around were the Gerber flat folds, with pins. To get the ones more common today, I would have to order from Australia.

Amen to the rompers! I’ve dressed my 4 month old in rompers most of the summer. I’ve even purchased some “boys” rompers (she’s a girl) because they usually have a little more to the leg area and look more like shorts. I agree that although the dresses are cute…they are just not practical for everyday around the house wearing.

Almost 5 months in over here, and I’d agree with just about everyone of these must have newborn items. My only addition would be the Ergo, or some other baby carrier. Our little bug it sort of high needs and baby carrying has saved my sanity.
Question: We cloth diaper and are also in San Diego, I had read that Charlie’s Soap was not so great with hard water. Do you use a water softener, or just haven’t seen negative results?

So interesting… Here in Spain it’s not usual cloth diaping, it was 35 years ago when I was born, but not anymore, and I don´t know what the advantages are. Neither is swaddling babies, that´s why I asked you in instagram about Ellerie´s confort.
    Thankyou for sharing your expierience!

Wow, if I made a list like this of stuff I loved and needed those early months, it would be nearly identical! We also have 19 BumGenius diapers and use Charlie’s. My son is 15 months old now and we still LOVE the diapers, and have had no issues with buildup or loss of absorption. We also use disposables overnight, as well as for traveling, and use disposable wipes. Yes, we could always be doing more, but we’re saving a lot just by doing what we’re doing, and we’re happy with that. 🙂
I’ve never used any Medela baby toiletries so I’m glad to see a recommendation on those. I’ve never used Baby Ganics wipes either, but their daily lotion and baby sunscreen are my absolute favorites, so I may switch from Pampers sensitive wipes to those. So affordable for a safe, organic brand too!
And yay for swaddling! It is fun to see that I have some stuff in common with a cool crafty blogging mama that I admire. 🙂

The sun definitely helps. Sun as often as you can. If you get ammonia, you’ll know by the smell. Also if Ellerie springs up with a diaper rash it’s usually time to stripe.

We used those swaddlers with my second. The first one did not want to be swaddled, ever. Funny how different they are! When he got to be around 3 months, I would continue to swaddle but with his arms out. And then eventually took it off. It seemed to be a good transition out of it.
And Gerber birdseye diapers are my favorite!! For actual cloth diapers (we use them with Thirsties covers) and for everything else too. They also make very good cleaning rags 😉

I just have to add 2 cents on the summer infant swaddle blankets. I had those for my babes and they broke right out of them and got tangled. They have been passed along to friends who also have had the same problem and haven’t gotten any use out of them. The Aden and Anahi’s blankets, however, are wonderful. That is what my summer baby was swaddled in at night.

This is a great post. I have a baby girl just 7 days younger than beautiful Ellerie and we use about half of the same things. I had to crack up about the nursing bra point! Wish I knew that ahead of time! I bought new bras in the last days of pregnancy, ripped tags off and washed them being the “perfectly prepared” mother lol. Only fit for a week or 2 until my milk came in. Then bought another round for my out of control monster boobs. Now my supply has evened out and I need a whole new size. What a mess! Wonder if the maternity store sales lady gets a commission and purposely withheld this information!

You can buy an infant insert for the ergo (or roll up a receiving blanket & put it under her bum – does the same thing) – I live in San Diego, too and the insert was too hot for my little guys, but the blanket worked perfectly until the babies were big enough to use it without an insert.
I used my ergo more than any other carrier for both my boys (including stretchy wraps, woven wraps, bjorns…you name it we pretty much tried it) – I still use my ergo with my 16 month old.

I live in San Diego, and (mostly) cloth diapered both my boys – I think most people who have had issues with charlie’s soap notice fairly quickly (ammonia). I ended up switching to Tide Free and that worked for me, but if you don’t notice anything weird (smelly or super-leaky diapers) I think you’re ok. Also, there is a sd diaper circle facebook group (and babywearing group, too) that are really awesome about answering questions.

Hi Elise. I used cloth diapers with my now 12 year old, and back then I was considered to be quite quirky! I wonder if you know about the disposable liners you can get for when Ellerie goes to solids? It’s like a fine paper sheet that you place in the diaper and then you lift it out and drop in the toilet with the solids on top of it. It made poppy diapers acceptable to my husband!!! LOL. We used Kooshies brand diapers and liners. Kooshies also did fabric liners which are great for extra absorption at night. We only ever used disposables for flights and travelling when cloth could not be dealt with properly and sanitarily. Best wishes. I am enjoying your new mama commentary!

Yes yes yes to the ergo!! It is so great. Now that my daughter is too heavy for me to carry in front, I carry her on my back (while she pulls my ponytail and laughs…) My only suggestion is buy one with a light coloured hood. My daughter didn’t like to use it so much when she was in front, but now when she falls asleep on my back I put it on to support her head. However it’s black and it gets pretty toasty in the sun… They are expensive but worth it. Babysteals.com often has them for sale for a great price, but only the all black ones. Secondhand items are also a cheap way to go for baby items too. Congrats on the twins!!

mila stopped being swaddled around 2.5 or 3 months i think, but the adain & anais blankets are still going strong for us. i love them to toss over her stroller to block sunlight and as a nursing coverup when we’re out. we also live for those cloth diapers as burp cloths! for any other ladies reading this, i have the ameda purely yours electric pump since it was one of the options covered, in full, by my health insurance company and i have been thrilled with it. as i tote it back and forth from home to work to home on a weekly basis, i love that its compact. i too have the medela manual which i use at home when electric is at work or which i take in my purse for things like all-day conferences when i need to pump while out. never heard of those wipes – thanks for the tip!

Great list! Just wanted to share a cloth diaper tip: we never bought a diaper sprayer, reviews were mixed and I had friends tell me they weren’t really happy with them. Instead we use the grovia liners to dispose of solid waste. You just pick them up and flush them! I was afraid that with the sprayer something might spray back on me, so I was glad to find these!

We live in a big city and I can not imagine navigating a twin stroller anywhere! So I guess we will just use ergos for the babies in the beginning.. and than buy a cheaper stroller when they can sit up?! Hard decisions, still some months to think and decide. 🙂

We wasted so much money on clothes in those first 6 months. My son pretty much lived in sleep-suits and onesies. I also made the mistake of saving some of the nicer clothes for best and they only ended up being worn a couple of times. We didn’t buy shoes for him until he started walking though, I couldn’t see the point and it was a massive saving. Plus I’ve heard it’s better for the development of their feet.
