Maxi
skirt from Alternative Apparel. baby wrap from solly baby.

One of the most frequent questions I get (aside from "how do you print your photos?") is "where do you buy your maxi skirts and dresses?" The answer is…everywhere. I cannot resist a well-priced maxi. In the beginning when the trend started, I thought I couldn't pull them off (I'm pretty short at 5'3"). But now (probably way after the trend has faded) I have completely embraced them. I wore them before I was pregnant, my entire pregnancy and continue to wear them now. They are flattering, comfortable and forgiving, which was key in the weeks after Ellerie arrived when I was insanely swollen post-c-section (thoughts on this will need to be shared in another post…oh man, was I unprepared for the swelling).

Ps5
one of my favorite photos. dress from old navy.

I always look for soft jersey or cotton fabrics. Something with a little stretch but not too much. I stick to stripes and solid colors because they pair well with the rest of my closet. I usually skip anything with slits, layers or tiers.

Elise
dress from gap.

I have found that the way to make maxis work for me is to keep it super casual. I pair maxi skirts with v-neck tees (these are by far my favorite), tanks (I have so many of these) or button-down chambray (I'm living in this one). Sometimes I wear maxi dresses on their own, but usually I throw a tank or tee on top (for some reason I think they are more flattering this way). 85% of the time, I wear rainbows with a maxi, but if I am going out to dinner or trying to fancy things up for some odd reason, I'll wear flat sandals. On me, heels with maxis look ridiculous and like I'm trying too hard, so I save them to wear with shorter dresses.

Maxi2

old navy maternity striped skirt $30 (this totally works for non pregnant people), socialite knit racer back maxi dress $52, bobeau black and white striped skirt $40

Maxi1

liz lange for target black dress $30 (again, sold as a maternity swim cover up and yet it's totally wearable all the time. I wore it to a wedding rehearsal dinner, with a pair of flat sandals and fancy earrings), alternative apparel maxi skirt $38, splendid strapless maxi dress $55

Above are some of my favorite maxis for sale right now at reasonable prices. Starred ones are exact or similar to ones I currently own and wear often.  All links in this post are affiliate which means if you purchase through them I make a small commission. Happy shopping!

Elise, this is fabulous! I am also a vertically challenged person (5’4″) who loves maxi skirts. I actually just bought the Old Navy maternity skirt as a non-pregnant person and told hubby that I may wear maternity clothes…ALWAYS! So comfy and versatile. Currently trendy or not, comfort is ALWAYS in and I am a fan. Thanks for this post and for writing out my shopping list for me!!

I wear maxis a lot too:) I’m 5’4 and a couple of my dresses are petites from the Gap. I also like the skirts from The Daisy Shoppe”- I order them on line and they’re about $25 and have darling choices.
On the c-section thing- I had three because my babies were 9.15, 9.3 and 8.7:) and they are all normally sized 18, 16, and 11 y people now. The swelling will go down even more especially since you’re nursing. Just cover it up right now with these maxis!
    Have a good day Elise!

I’m vertically challenged the other way. 🙂 I’m 5’9″ but also in a wheelchair so I like to have super long maxi dresses that don’t ride up during the day. My favorite is a gray striped one I found at Target. I love it. I’ve never been much of a skirt/dress girl, but these are great.

This is great! I fell in love with maxi’s when I found one while pregnant – best things for a growing belly!! Now 6 weeks post-partum I still live in the thing, will have to check out some of these others to add to my wardrobe! Thanks!

I also jumped on the maxi train a little late. I always thought they wouldn’t work for me….I’m 5’2″. So I recently tried one on and instantly fell in love. I’m just starting to build my maxi wardrobe, so I love these tips! You are the best!

I am short so have always stayed away from Maxi’s plus the weather in the UK is not that summery – you always look so pretty in them 🙂

Maxi dresses and skirts are so wonderful! (How fun to see a whole post about them!) As a taller person (5’9″), I enjoy the comfort and simplicity of them; and the fact that I can not worry about being “ladylike” is a plus, too. Even when I’m playing with friends’ kids, I can sit (or lie) on the ground, be cross-legged, whatever…and it’s all good.
And yes – that I can dress them up or down, that I can wear them in all seasons – truly fantastic. =)

Love this, and have been wanting to buy some maxis once I get a job (fingers crossed!) and have an idea of the work culture. Your posts are my favorite. 🙂
On an unrelated note…do your parents/in-laws read your blog? (I only ask because my parents do, which causes some extra screening in what I write. I read your post about personal topics, so I figured they do…?)

Ever since I saw how often you wore you black/white chevron maxi, and mixed it up so well, i decided I had to have one. Summer clothes have just come into our stores (i’m in South Africa) and i found one at Woolies. Halleluja. I love it. Love love love it. And i’m only 5.3 too!

What is your take on wearing them when the weather is bad I live in the PNW and once fall and the rain hit I feel silly wearing them. I only have two but they are my go to clothes this summer!

and … sold. I cycled through a few maxi dresses a few summers ago when I was pregnant with Owen and it was so freaking hot, and then for some reason I totally stopped wearing them. but i’m thinking this later summer and fall season are going to see the return of the maxi for me! with flats at work and sandals the rest of the time. hooray!

I don’t love the way maternity pants fit me, so I now wear maxis always. I’ve bought 3 skirts and probably 7 dresses in the last few months, & they’re honestly all I wear. So comfy. I like to layer tees over a few of my dresses, too- I don’t love the way some of them look on their own, plus I’m large-chested, so I feel a bit more covered with a tee over the lower cut dresses. I have been curious what I’ll wear in the last month or two of my pregnancy- I’m due the first week of December. Thankfully, the weather here in Albuquerque will be great at least through mid-october.

I’m in 100% aggreeance over here! I’m only 5’2 and echo so many of your feelings on maxi’s here. I too wear them with my rainbows, flat sandals, and sometimes low profile wedges when I want a bit of height! They’ve been perfect prior to pregnancy, during my pregnancy, and the best transitional wardrobe post pregnancy! 🙂
I’m eager to checking out your links, thanks for sharing!

Curious, do you size down with the alternative apparel tees? Or do you like the unisex fit?

I love the idea of wearing a tee over maxi dresses. I have one dress that I love but it’s way too low-cut. I’m thinking it would be perfect with my fave plain white tee.

I always think that the maternity clothes at Target are cuter than the non-maternity clothes. Thank you for giving me the validation to buy them as a non-pregnant person…you may have changed my life!

good question! I would probably not wear them in the rain (unless it was warm summer rain) because I only wear them with sandals. I will have to do a post on winter/fall apparel. 😉

I totally agree on the heels with maxi dresses thing. It feels.. weird. Even if it’s wedges and not actual heels. Looks great on some people, though. I just recently discovered the joys of maxi dresses. I can’t remember the last time I put on a pair of jeans. Sometimes I think they’re a little TOO forgiving though. I don’t like to weigh myself or anything, so how my jeans are fitting is usually my weight gauge.

I have one exactly like the black and white striped one, but I can’t wear it because it’s completely see through. Any tips on how to combat this? A slip seems like an uncomfortable option, especially in the summer.

Do you ever get them hemmed? I love mine, too and I’m a few inches taller than you (5ft 5) and find that I have to hoist my skirts up a bit to keep them from dragging on the ground. Pretty silly when you consider the average, American woman stands 5ft 4! 🙂
You look darling! Love all the items you linked.

I’ve always thought that at 5’4 maxis wouldn’t work for me and I have never tried them. After reading this post I can’t wait to give them at try. It will soon be spring here in Australia, so perfect timing.

I’m not quite 5’5″, and I wear maxis all the time, and frequently get complimented. I love skirts made from Jersey fabric, they are comfortable and easy, like a pair of sweatpants, but look so much better.

I don’t get them hemmed! I wear them pretty high or fold over the waist when needed. I also tie a big knot in the bottom all the time to keep myself from tripping!

love maxis too though i definitely need to add to my collections. for tall ladies (i’m just over 5’7″) i’ve found Rachel Pally to make very long maxis! higher price point but a dream when most run about 3″ too short on me. elise, do you wear maxis much in fall/winter? i have yet to nail down a cold weather look for these.

just curious… i’m considering purchasing the skirt in your top photo by Alternative Apparel. when i go to their sizing chart it shows i would order an XL. I’ve never worn an extra large before. always a medium or large. in your last photo, i ordered the skirt that’s pictured in the middle with the blue * mark by Alternative/Piperlime. I ordered their size large from using their sizing chart and it fits perfectly and I absolutely love it. it’s so comfy. Do you know if the skirt in the top photo runs small or should I call them? thanks in advance for your help.
