Ellerie

Ellerie Eve.

pronounced : el-er-ree. think hillary (hill-er-ree).

I have known for years that if I was blessed with a baby girl I wanted an "e" name for her to match mine. For a long time, Eleanor was the front runner for us (we both liked that it was the name of the President's daughter on West Wing and P liked that it was the Sam from Lord of the Rings daughter's name).

But then I started hearing it more and more often and though I think popularity is not an issue to even consider if you LOVE a name, I was open to other options.

In October 2011, while Paul was on deployment the first time, a friend of mine told me about her family friend who had named their daughter Ellerie. "How do you spell that?!?" I almost shouted. I loved it. I had never heard it before and it was perfect. I emailed Paul the next day that I had heard a brand new "e" name and it was my new baby girl front-runner. (We were no where near pregnant, but this odd behavior is common for me.) Paul responded that he really liked it and was curious about pronunciation. For the next year it stayed the front runner and then in late October 2012, we found out I was pregnant.

So Ellerie was her name before she was conceived, before she was confirmed to be a girl and before she entered the world.

Yes, we considered other names. I read on baby name forums that "Ellerie" was a lame name that sounded made up, that sounded masculine, etc. etc. etc. I fretted about spelling (the "Ellery" version is more common and many people think "Ellorie" when they hear it). But then I realized two things – one, I LOVED it. Paul loved it. It was unique without being bizarre. And two – spelling errors happen when people are lazy, not when names are different. I read somewhere that Anne Hathaway's name was spelled wrong on her Golden Globe. I mean COME ON. The name is Anne and she's super famous. If that can be spelled wrong, any name can.

We struggled with a middle name. Eve was finalized about a week or so out from birth. I worried that the double E was lame. But then realized it sounded wonderful and honored a very special women from my childhood. She was not a grandma, but she may as well have been. I know she would love Ellerie so much and is for sure smiling down on us from heaven.

And now my Ellerie girl is here. In the flesh. The name fits her like a dream and everytime I say it or hear it, I know we picked right. It will grow with her well, I think.

I love the name. I actually think your spelling makes the most sense! I love seeing photos of your little family, so sweet to see it grow. I’ve followed your blog since before you were even engaged, so while I don’t “know” you I feel like I do and I’m so excited for you!

Ellerie is very pretty! We also named our son before he was conceived and before we knew he was going to be boy. 🙂 It was almost like he told us what he would like to be named before he comes.
    Congrats!

I think that those of us whose first thought was “Ellery Queen” are showing our age. 😉 But since (I think it was) Timothy Hutton that was the star… oh wait; maybe his DAD??? Either way, they were handsome so it’s a good memory. LOL @ myself.
GREAT name! I’m glad that I read through the comments b/c I was going to ask if she was going to be nicknamed “Elle” or – please, no – RiRi. I saw your answer, though.
From a mom who named her daughter “Mykah” (pronounced Micah but – like you – I wanted it ‘softened’ for a girl), I can assure you that if her name can be misspelled or mispronounced, it will be. And it will bug her sometimes. I told my daughter that she could change her name when she was 18yo if she was still unhappy with it. She’s almost 23yo and has kept it. She likes that she’s the only person she knows with that name. (Go, me!)
Start looking for the personalized stuff right now, because it won’t be on the shelves at Toys R Us or anywhere else that she looks, hoping to find a cool keychain with her name on it. 😉
    Happy happy happy days!!

Lovely name and congratulations! My family is Welsh and my name is Eleri (slightly different pronunciation than Ellerie). I love looking up the background and meaning of names, I think this website tends to be very accurate: http://www.behindthename.com/. Eleri’s background isn’t incredibly clear, but it most likely comes from the name of a river that was named after a daughter of a chieftain (kinda like a princess!). I like the thought of the connection with water. Baby names are so fun!

Love this story. My daughter also has a name that begins with the same letter as my own..and my husband’s, actually. I chose it waaaay back before we started trying. My husband loved it instantly, but I waivered for a while and looked into other names. I got exactly the same comments you did…and, actually, her own doctors frequently mistake her for a boy…and it doesn’t matter. It’s a great, traditional but unusual name….and now I sign cards X^3.
I well and truly love the combo of Ellerie Eve. Very nice!

I think as her parents you have the number one choice in picking her name because you are her parents. When I was pregnant and having a girl one of my play group mums said she had always wanted to call her baby girl Sienna and as I had never heard of this before actually and actually thought it I was weird when I first heard of it. I knew that my friend had 4 children and was done and later that afternoon thought Sienna sounded wonderful and not every child had that name. It also means “redy brown” and I thought this was appropriate as when my son was born he had redy brown hair so thought she would as well. It was perfect. I had originally wanted to call her Rose or Georgia but my husband (now ex) didn’t like either of those but didn’t mind Sienna so we called her Sienna Rose. I think your baby is adorable and your Instagram pics are beautiful. I know I used to wake up and then she her (or my first born son) and just stare at them in the amazement that they are a little person that I made. As I have previously mentioned babies are born all around the world every day but when you have your first baby it is just mind boggling when you see a little baby that you grew and created. In a few weeks time she will be smiling and a whole new level of happiness will be felt. Enjoy every moment of being a mummy as hard as it is and as exhausting as it is, it is wonderful. It is a gorgeous name Elise and there’s nothing unusual in my books having her name ready & waiting. We had our daughter’s name Anique “ready to go” for about 10 years before she arrived. When I was pregnant we worried about her name being a bit too “unique” but went with our gut and turns out it was perfect.

what a lovely name! i agree – spelling and pronunciation errors are going to happen regardless! my sister is Tynah and while it’s uncommon, it such an easy name to sound out “tie-nuh”… yet it’s never, ever said right. more people will probably tell her how much they love the name, when she’s older 🙂

It’s a GORGEOUS name, and so fitting! My name is Angela… easy, right? Definitely gets mispronounced. But my parents picked well. I canNOT imagine being called anything but Angela/Angie/Ang, minus nicknames. It fits me, perfectly. If Jen and I ever have a daughter, the name Cynn has been picked out since we were teenagers!

I’m a double E too! I didn’t think anything of it until you mentioned it. My only thought about it is that I’m named completely for my great-grandma, Elizabeth Eva, which I think is nice.
And as for the imperfect first family picture, she won’t care! My first family picture is of us in the NICU where I spent my first week after being born with Spina Bifida. That was almost 25 years ago and I love that picture. It doesn’t matter to me that it wasn’t taken at home or that they weren’t all made up or even looking at the camera, or that I didn’t have a cute little outfit on. I like it because I can see how happy my parents were and just knowing that was the first picture of the 3 of us (before we became 4 a few years later!) is special enough.

I think you’re baby girl’s name is absolutely beautiful, and it seems to suit her perfectly too. I had never heard it before, but I really like it. As for pronunciation or spelling mistakes, no point in worrying about it. My name is Ana – three simple letters, it doesn’t get easier than that – and I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve heard or seen it written down wrong – even from people who I interact with on multiple occasions!
Congratulations on becoming such a beautiful family of three. Sending only good, positive thoughts your way. 🙂

First off, congratulations. She is beautiful and lovely and perfect. Thank you for sharing her and your story with the world. I don’t know you but I’ve been thinking and wondering and worrying about you, your baby and your family these past few days (which is strange since I don’t really know you….)
I, too, love her name. You were right about the popularity thing. I named my first born Hannah and then learned about a week later that “Hannah” was number one or two on the popularity charts at the time. At first I was disappointed but then I realized that, had I known, we wouldn’t have changed it because we love it and it’s who she is.
I normally don’t comment on the blogs I read but wanted to share along to a photographer that I admire. I know you have things lined up with Tara Whitney already (whom I LOVE), but I just love this woman’s images and thought I’d share with you as inspiration. I hope you get some new ideas and can capture your beautiful daughter in my ways…

Lover Ellerie’s name! My little girl is Eleanor after my mum. I always knew I wanted an Ellie or Nina (my Nan) and as I got older and closer to having a baby I began to see Eleanor more and more. Funny, everyone had thought it a strange name when I was a child! I loved it so much though that we went with it and Ellie is now the only Ellie at her school, we have friends who have a an Elle and her brother told us Ellie should be Elle too. My husband said, nah, can’t do that, then we’d have an L and M!!!(I am Emma or Em to almost everyone)
So, my mum, myself and little girl are all E. It’s a nice tradition we’ve started I think 🙂
Best wishes to your little family xx

I hope you continue to feel better each day. I had a C-section with my first child and delivered the next two via vbac. Neither delivery was a walk in the park but it was the C-section where I over-reached (at about a week after delivery). Please keep taking it easy even if you feel like you can do more. So glad your Mom is there to help. Enjoy!

Felix also had his name before birth, his twin brother was supposed to have a rather seldom Danish name. When we saw him though (and when my mother mispronounced his name in the most terrible way) we realised he was a Peter – and the name fits perfectly.
Both names are nothing special as such but not widely used in their generation and with out Austro-Danish last names they are one of a kind.

Beautiful name…in the tradition of weird coincidences in our lives (married on the same day/year, etc.) I named my daughter Eleanor (after Eleanor Rigby) and people tell me all the time what a beautiful name it is, but I’ve started hearing it more often. I wanted her to have a unique name especially after growing up as a Jennifer! I love the name Ellerie- I knew how to pronounce it right away and I agree when the name fits its a beautiful thing. I think her name is pretty. I usually really don’t like “creative” names and with the spelling thing… it’s not always “laziness”. IMO some parents are just begging for it. Then they want to spend their child’s school years constantly complaining that no one spells or pronounces it right (I see this on 2peas a lot).
Anyway, I really like the name Ellerie. I had never heard of it before.

I love her name. When we named our daughter, we figured she’d be spelling her last name anyway, so what’s seven more letters. True to form, people don’t spell it, or pronounce it correctly. And she’s been correcting them since she was in Kindergarten. LOL. Her only “thing” is there are never any pre-personalized things in stores – like those kitschy items you want when you go on vacation. There never was for me when I was younger either, so I can sympathize. But it’s her name and it fits her well; it’s as unique and lovely as she is. 🙂
