Ellerie

Ellerie Eve.

pronounced : el-er-ree. think hillary (hill-er-ree).

I have known for years that if I was blessed with a baby girl I wanted an "e" name for her to match mine. For a long time, Eleanor was the front runner for us (we both liked that it was the name of the President's daughter on West Wing and P liked that it was the Sam from Lord of the Rings daughter's name).

But then I started hearing it more and more often and though I think popularity is not an issue to even consider if you LOVE a name, I was open to other options.

In October 2011, while Paul was on deployment the first time, a friend of mine told me about her family friend who had named their daughter Ellerie. "How do you spell that?!?" I almost shouted. I loved it. I had never heard it before and it was perfect. I emailed Paul the next day that I had heard a brand new "e" name and it was my new baby girl front-runner. (We were no where near pregnant, but this odd behavior is common for me.) Paul responded that he really liked it and was curious about pronunciation. For the next year it stayed the front runner and then in late October 2012, we found out I was pregnant.

So Ellerie was her name before she was conceived, before she was confirmed to be a girl and before she entered the world.

Yes, we considered other names. I read on baby name forums that "Ellerie" was a lame name that sounded made up, that sounded masculine, etc. etc. etc. I fretted about spelling (the "Ellery" version is more common and many people think "Ellorie" when they hear it). But then I realized two things – one, I LOVED it. Paul loved it. It was unique without being bizarre. And two – spelling errors happen when people are lazy, not when names are different. I read somewhere that Anne Hathaway's name was spelled wrong on her Golden Globe. I mean COME ON. The name is Anne and she's super famous. If that can be spelled wrong, any name can.

We struggled with a middle name. Eve was finalized about a week or so out from birth. I worried that the double E was lame. But then realized it sounded wonderful and honored a very special women from my childhood. She was not a grandma, but she may as well have been. I know she would love Ellerie so much and is for sure smiling down on us from heaven.

And now my Ellerie girl is here. In the flesh. The name fits her like a dream and everytime I say it or hear it, I know we picked right. It will grow with her well, I think.

I love the name. We were considering that name for a girl back when I was pregnant with my youngest (my husband’s grandfather was named Ellery). No girls for me though, all boys!

Yes on the misspelling thing! Jennifer was the most popular girls name in America for 15 years (having a common name is BORING) and people still misspell it all the time. When I shorten it to “Jen” at Starbucks they often write Jon on my cup. Really?!

Ellerie being “unique without being bizarre” is quite a good description! I’ve only ever known the name (in whatever spelling) to be a man’s name, but I think that like Ashely/Robin/Kim/etc. it’s suited well to either gender and the “ee” sound at the end is a bit feminine. I LOVE the double-barrelled E name choice. It just flows so beautifully.
    Congrats again! She’s perfect.

I love this name. Had I ever heard of it I think it would have been my daughter’s name. Misspelling is going to happen for everyone. Seriously, my daughter’s nickname is Maggie and no one seems able to spell that (let alone her given name of Marguerite). I also love E names. My younger son is named “Everett” sadly, people keep sticking an E on the end which makes it a girls name. His name was a super last minute already born type pick so this didn’t occur to us. I’m babbling. But in short, love the name so very much and the double E Eve too!

I’d never heard the name before but once you announced her I knew it was perfect – she’s perfect and her name is perfect.
I like names that are different and aren’t overly popular, and I think nearly everyone gets their names spelt wrong. When I registered for university they saw my name, thought it was Martin and registered me as a boy….that was a fun one to have to correct! And that happens more than you would expect!

We almost named one of our twins Elle (but it was too similar to our last name) and we did make one of her middle names Evy so Ellerie Eve is music to my ears.
Excellent choice for a gorgeous baby girl.

I love the name Ellerie. It is unique and pretty. My daughter’s name is Delanie (but pronounced Delaney) so I understand the spelling issue. I wanted something a little different and there has been confusion here and there but it’s not a big deal.

Yes! I for one LOVE alliteration 🙂 My cousin just had a baby who’s name is Caroline Delaney D. So her’s is a bit different from EEC, but similar sounding.
Ellerie seems like the most logical spelling and I knew how to pronounce it before you explained.
I like Eleanor, too, but agree that it’s very common!
    Ellerie Eve is perfection.

I love this post, although I have to admit when I first saw her name on Instagram I thought it was prounounced Ellery (no ee at the end) and I like even more now you have explained how you’d like it prounounced.
My daughters name is Grier and I have always loved the name although fretted over whether is was too different – my husband and I are pretty conservative – but have never regretted if for a second. Almost everyone we meet tells us they love her name – different but not weird is the best way someone described it and anyone who didn’t like it has been tactful enough to stay quiet! I like girls names which are at the less flowery end of the scale and Grier is a feminine form of Greig, my husbands name.
Glad you and Paul chose a name you both love regardless of what others might think – it starts your little girl in great stead to be independent and confident and thanks so much for sharing the story – these things about others fascinate me.

I had never heard it before but loved it immediately! Very well done!
The name I had selected before I was pregnant was Parker for a boy. The day after I found out I was pregnant a man in my office had a son and named him Parker. Devastated doesn’t even come close to describing it! For me that took the name off the table and I called my husband sobbing from my office.
We also wanted something unique but not bizarre so when our baby turned out to be a boy we named him Jenson. I was also concerned people would incorrectly spell it with an “en” at the end but like you said, I loved it too much to worry about it. Plus, to help people remember I tell them he’s my son – “son”.
Just wanted to tell you the swaddle you are using is the best one I found! Keep it up as long as you can! Both of my babies slept 4-5 hours when we brought them home from the hospital, 6-7 by the end of the first month, and 8-9 after that. I swaddled until they were just too big to do anymore, between 9 and 12 months.
    SO SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!

I will be praying for you as you recover from the birth and are separated from your spouse. I hade a very similar birth story with my firstborn, (long, hard labor ending in c-section), so my heart goes out to you.

i’ve been following your blog since basically the beginning of time, and rarely comment.. i literally started tearing up at your “family of three” blog post yesterday, so i just felt like i had to say something:) i have to say that you have definitely proven your word “brave” your entire pregnancy. your time with paul was short, and so much change has happened with your move.. but from the outside looking in, you have handled it all with such grace. i’m sure it hasn’t been easy, but i admire how positive you are. praying for his safety and return home. you are awesome, lady.
    congratulations, elise. she’s a beauty:)

I think you hit that sweet-spot of baby names, finding a name that is beautiful, unique without being outlandish, gender-appropriate, and pronounceable. I think it’s pronounced just how it looks, right? Although maybe it was just familiar to me already because I do know an Ellery? But, the Ellery I know actually goes by Bubba… welcome to the South! 😉

for as long as I can remember, my name — Pressley — has prompted a million questions from people. are you named after Elvis? isn’t that a boy’s name? how is it spelled? no, wait, HOW is it spelled? why the heck would your parents name you that?
answering all those questions every. single. time you meet someone gives you a quick wit and a lot of patience. Miss Ellerie will undoubtedly have tons of both because of her name. I think it’s awesome and suits her — and you! — perfectly.
(also, a simple and pretty middle name like Eve — mine is Kay — can always come in handy if she gets tired of so many questions. ;))

My name is so commonly mistaken for a male that it’s just a fact of life these days – although I always loved the startled look on teachers’ faces when they called my name and heard a decidedly feminine voice say “here!” But – I have found that a name is what you make of it. If you own your name, no one will ever question whether it suits you. (Nearly everyone I’ve ever met says that before they knew me, they considered “Carter” a male name – and now that they know me, they wonder why boys have a girl’s name!) Ellerie is a gorgeous name and with a mama like you, that little lady is going to make it her own, no question about it.
    Congratulations!
