Ellerie

Ellerie Eve.

pronounced : el-er-ree. think hillary (hill-er-ree).

I have known for years that if I was blessed with a baby girl I wanted an "e" name for her to match mine. For a long time, Eleanor was the front runner for us (we both liked that it was the name of the President's daughter on West Wing and P liked that it was the Sam from Lord of the Rings daughter's name).

But then I started hearing it more and more often and though I think popularity is not an issue to even consider if you LOVE a name, I was open to other options.

In October 2011, while Paul was on deployment the first time, a friend of mine told me about her family friend who had named their daughter Ellerie. "How do you spell that?!?" I almost shouted. I loved it. I had never heard it before and it was perfect. I emailed Paul the next day that I had heard a brand new "e" name and it was my new baby girl front-runner. (We were no where near pregnant, but this odd behavior is common for me.) Paul responded that he really liked it and was curious about pronunciation. For the next year it stayed the front runner and then in late October 2012, we found out I was pregnant.

So Ellerie was her name before she was conceived, before she was confirmed to be a girl and before she entered the world.

Yes, we considered other names. I read on baby name forums that "Ellerie" was a lame name that sounded made up, that sounded masculine, etc. etc. etc. I fretted about spelling (the "Ellery" version is more common and many people think "Ellorie" when they hear it). But then I realized two things – one, I LOVED it. Paul loved it. It was unique without being bizarre. And two – spelling errors happen when people are lazy, not when names are different. I read somewhere that Anne Hathaway's name was spelled wrong on her Golden Globe. I mean COME ON. The name is Anne and she's super famous. If that can be spelled wrong, any name can.

We struggled with a middle name. Eve was finalized about a week or so out from birth. I worried that the double E was lame. But then realized it sounded wonderful and honored a very special women from my childhood. She was not a grandma, but she may as well have been. I know she would love Ellerie so much and is for sure smiling down on us from heaven.

And now my Ellerie girl is here. In the flesh. The name fits her like a dream and everytime I say it or hear it, I know we picked right. It will grow with her well, I think.

Also, I don’t think it sounds masculine at all!

I’ve seen it spelled Ellory, but like your version much better! It’s so much more feminine!

Congratulations to you & Paul! I have followed your journey from your relocating to DC to now. I haven’t read all your comments but in case someone did not mention this, Ellerie means cheerful. I couldn’t think of a better name for your little darling!

Her name is beautiful. Whether people love it or dislike it, it’s perfect for her because her
mama chose it for her. 🙂
P.S. Just curious: Since you stated you had wanted an E name to match yours, would a potential second child have a P name to match Paul’s?
(Reason I ask? –> In my family, the children were named with first and middle names to match our parents’ initials. First child matched dad’s, second child matched mom’s etc.)

What a beautiful name, it just rolls off the tongue so perfectly. I have an E name myself and would like to continue that tradition as well!

I absolutely LOVED your line, “And two – spelling errors happen when people are lazy, not when names are different.” It resonated with me because my principal for SEVEN YEARS has misspelled my name in most correspondence despite having a large sign above his computer emphasizing the correct spelling. I have resigned to the fact that the misspelled name must be my alter ego.
Congratulations on your little one and her beautiful name!
MaIRa (rhymes with Sarah) (forever misspelled as MaRIa)

I’m a new reader of your blog…came via IG. I love the name and how you had decided on it even before you were pregnant. Really love how lyrical it sounds. My daughter’s name is Elisha (el-lee-sha) and now we are searching for a name for our second one due in a couple of months.

I also thought of Ellery Queen (but I am a detective show addict, so I know I’m in the minority there)! Elodie, which is similar in sound and eve were both on my list of top names . We went with Ravenna Rose for our little one. It is always mispronounced even though i think its pronounced just as it looks. I’m sure it will be misspelled. It’s ok. The names we choose for our children are perfect nonetheless. ❤

I love Ellerie. I was wondering how to pronounce it and you made it clear.
    I love E-name. Mine is.
A note : Ellerie in French is really close to “Elle rit” wich means “she laughs” !

This is so awesome.I have a 3year old daughter named Ellory Lillian. We got the name by mixing up letters in my husbands mn. (Leroy) and her middle name is after a grandparent. I have only heard one other child named Ellory (8 year old)
