Favorite-finds

I've never been much of a thrift store or Craigslist shopper. I totally envy the folks that are and marvel at the "look what I found!" photos on their blogs and Instagram feeds. It's such an artform, and something I didn't know if I'd have the patience for.

Chair

Turns out, I sort of do. I started searching Craigslist right after we knew we'd be getting our San Diego house because I knew I would need and want different furniture to fill it. So far, I have only found one big piece, the chair I shared earlier this week (which isn't vintage so much as awesome).

Candlesticks

Craigslist is a beast. It's overwhelming and you have to look through loads of junk to find the gems. I found this post from Emily Henderson super inspiring and helpful. When I am looking, I search specific things like "wood dining table" or "bookshelf" or "bench." I also search "fiddle leaf fig" almost daily as well as "indoor tree" because I have my fingers crossed someone is going to need to move across the country and want to sell their giant plants for cheap. "Mid century" is also a frequently searched term, but there is always an insane amount of junk and $1700 coffee tables to wade through. This general search term is how I found my plant stand, art, candlesticks and mirror though – so I think my three months of casual browsing have been worth it.

Plantstand

I am very careful with Craigslist and don't make plans to go and pick up something unless I have someone with me. I negotiate the price in advance and bring cash. You can sometimes tell by the photos and way the listing is phrased if this is a legit situation or something not worth wasting time on. And of course if anything about the correspondence feels off, I don't even consider making the purchase.

Dresser

When I feel like driving around and looking, I like to visit some of the used furniture stores in the San Diego area. Not all are awesome. Not all are even close to affordable. But many are so fun to wander through. I spent a lot of time on yelp when I first got here, figuring out what stores might be worth dropping in on (turns out they almost all are and I have many more I'd like to visit). Below are I have enjoyed and recommend so far :

  • Stuff (where I found the dresser for the baby's room)
  • Mid-Century Design (where I found my huge black and white rug)
  • The Atomic Bazaar (last time I went during the week it was closed unless you called and set up an appointment, but they had cool big pieces the first time I went)
  • Rusty Gold (this is a quirky shop located in a residential neighborhood that fills two shipping containers – they have a blog with photos of new pieces)
  • a stroll down India Street in Little Italy is worth it too. There are a few used shops and a few normal stores. The deals are not great, but it's totally fun to window-shop and you never know… we bought our white trunk at India Street Antiques two years ago when we lived here.

Elephant

I have started visiting local Goodwills and my favorite (and only!) finds so far have been a wooden elephant for the baby's room, a woven basket for the indoor tree I have let to find and two ceramic mugs. Not huge scores, by any means, but under $10 total so that's a win.

Mugs

My biggest thing when I am searching online or sifting through things in person is to not let the "deal" or perceived deal cloud my judgement and therefore accidentally end up buying crap. I am constantly asking myself :

  • Do I know where this will go in my house?
  • Do I love it more than what I already have?
  • Is whatever I am looking at equal or better to everything else I already own?
  • Would I pay twice as much for it?
  • Have I ever seen anything like it?

Whitetrunk

In general, if I have to stop and think too hard about it, it's not the right fit. But if I can answer yes, yes, yes, yes and no to the above questions it's usually something I should jump on. I'm not yet great at scoring the BEST deals in the world, but I am pretty good at being realistic about what's good and what's bad and leaving the store empty handed.

Rug

I'm still such a newbie at this, but I'm enjoying the hunt so much. I love my collected treasures.

I used to have a vintage Etsy shop, so I’m pretty seasoned at this whole thing. Though now that I’d only be searching for myself, I hardly hunt, because it doesn’t feel worth the time for the few things I’d be looking for.
My biggest hint at antique stores or flea markets and other multiple seller situations is to go for the messy booth / stalls rather than the well presented ones. In well presented ones, you’ll find good stuff fast, but owners generally know what they have and price it accordingly. If you have to wade through some junk, you’re more likely to find a super underpriced gem.
Love your finds. That chair is so rad.
My rule is also that you always, always open boxes. Probably my favorite find has been a 1920s faux bois typewriter, and it was closed up in a box that didn’t look like a typewriter case under a table behind some junk. I’m so glad I opened that box, because I paid $20 for a typewriter worth hundreds.

My mom is a thrift-store-aholic. No joke, she goes almost every day because they are always getting new stuff in and switching stuff out. She can find some really good pieces sometimes too. I am not so much enthused about it. Maybe I don’t have the patience for it, or the “vision” of what I’ll do with the things I see. But I do know that you can find some really good clothes at times. Don’t be afraid to search the racks!

Whenever my husband and I are contemplating a new piece of furniture we always scan craigslist for a month first in hopes of finding something we love that’s cheaper instead. We’ve had quite a bit of luck so far. I love all of your finds. Especially those mugs! Do they have a brand on the bottom by chance? I would love to know who made them. They are awesome!

To find the treasures that will work for you is truly an artform. Its natural talent. I lack the vision for seeing a piece in my space. To add to that, thrift store shopping has an urgency to it… ‘get it now, or you may never have the chance again’ I live 75 miles away from the nearest Trader Joes, and I love Trader Joes. When I’m there, I feel that urgency, when will I ever get back? I end up buying 20 packages of sausages and 15 tubs of peanut butter and 10 cans of coffee, because you know, Trader Joes is the only place in the world that sells this stuff. (heh). My point is, you have to be able to live in that urgency and still be rational. I am not. I lose all my senses and act impulsively. Thrift store shopping is not for me. All to say, YOU HAVE DONE A FABULOUS JOB!! You have raw, natural talent, that you are honing into an acquired skill. Looks awesome!

Asking those questions is so important though isn’t it. So many times I’ve been about to buy something and then thought “wait, no this isn’t going to work with the couch/table etc”
It’s a great feeling when you do get something awesome though. I love that elephant for baby girls room, its fab.

I totally love spending a Sat morning in summer driving to a really nice/expensive area and following signs to garage sales. I once decorated my condo with a mix of IKEA and garage sale finds.
I collect handmade brooms and I found my favorite one in the back room of a thrift shop in Ohio. We were killing time waiting for a bridal shop to open to go for fittings. I popped my head in the store room (with permission) and there it was, hanging behind a HARNESS on the wall! $6 and it’s still my favorite.

I have stayed away from thrifting because it just feels overwhelming and exhausting to me. Plus, the Craigslist site just hurts my eyes. It’s so random and unending. 🙂 But…I am inspired by everyone who finds truly awesome stuff in their perusing and it makes me wonder if maybe I could be patient enough to try it. I rarely visit garage sales because they just seem to be all junk in my area. We have several consignment stores but all seem to be overpriced. Maybe Craigslist really is the way to go.

I am a thrift-store-aholic and I love Craigslist. I’ve given Craigslist a break for a while since We don’t need anything super specific right now. My favorite find was our big dresser (worth around $1000, sold for $40, delivered to me for $10), and it’s got gorgeous craftsman lines. The result of all of this is that I don’t think we buy many things new anymore. I know where in town to go and where to watch for things to come available. It’s pretty fun!!

Love thrifting and antiquing! It’s my favorite! Never got too much off of craigslist though. And I always am amazed by what people find on the curb for free, that doesn’t seem to happen in my area. I love all the pieces you’ve found! I love how there is more of a back story to “found” pieces as opposed to buying from a big box store too. Great post, I already am careful about what I get but I never thought about whether I would pay double for something… love that!

Nope, scratch that. My favorite find was a high-backed cream, leather Luna Chair and ottoman. Loved it and still love it.

I love visiting those shops too but I always go in with the goal of leaving the store empty handed. That means that if I do buy something it’s a must have!

Yep! When I went to pickup the mirror (found on CL) the lady was having almost a garage sale. I got the framed art and candlesticks for $6 total! 🙂

I love that you anticipate the questions/comments from your readers and let us know that you always take someone with you when you shop Craig’s List. The mom in me wanted to know that… Good job – on the post and the great finds!

Rule of thumb for garage sale: ten cents on a dollar … A large piece maybe up to twenty-five cents on dollar.

It looks like you have an interesting selection of shops in your area! Up until tonight, I’ve never even thought to check Craigslist to see if people sell stuff in Australia… I think I might keep an eye on this for awhile and see if I can score some awesome stuff for our new house! It’s very pricey from what I’ve seen on it so far, though. Thanks for the awesome post of ideas, and good luck in your endeavours to fill the rest of your place! 🙂
