DIYmobile

I saw this tutorial on Oh Happy Day last week and LOVED it. So simple! So cheap!

The projects I see that inspire me drop everything and make right away are always the best ones. Same goes for home goods. The stuff I see that I just have to buy right away – no deliberation – is always the stuff I love most. This is a good lesson because now I understand that when I take the time to deliberate or rationalize, it really means it's not a good fit.

My original plan was to hang this in the entry way. But I didn't buy enough supplies for a huge one and so the scale actually worked better over our bed. And now that it's up, I can confirm that the space above the headboard was missing something, but it wasn't a painted canvas. It was a super cheap mix of styrofoam balls and wooden dowels.

You could totally paint this for a different look, but I am sticking
with neutrals in the bedroom (and practically the whole house) at the
moment.

I hung it with fishing line and clear push-pins. These sculptures are incredibly light, and thanks to the hot glue, surprisingly sturdy. I know it will be awhile before baby girl can focus on it (not enough contrast) but in the meantime, Paul and I will have something to stare up at in the mornings…or in the middle of the night when we're up because baby girl has decided it's party time.

That looks so cute! I may need to scrounge around and see if I can come up with the supplies to make one of my own 🙂

It looks so cool!! You could always do one with black dowels and white balls for her room. Odd question, do you get earthquakes where you are? When my daughter was a baby we lived in Indiana on a major fault line. Everyone thought I was nuts because I wouldn’t put anything over her bed that was of any substance. As I was reminded often, I wasn’t in California! In any case, we had a huge earthquake, which she slept through entirely because nothing fell on her head. And I was justified. So I was wondering if you have purposely anchored items or made design decisions based on earthquakes?

I could see the styrofoam balls painted with glow in the dark paint. Then you could look at the “stars” as you fall asleep.

We do get earthquakes. Our big furniture is anchored to the wall because of this. There is nothing hanging over the baby’s crib and it’s pulled away from the wall so the art can’t fall in.
This installation weighs about a pound and is over Paul and I so I am not too concerned. 😉

I’m picturing a very pregnant woman trying to stand on a bed and wrestle overhead with fishing line and a giant sculpture. How do you pull these things off?!
This is very cool, I can imagine it in primary colours for a playroom.

Nice and simple. More and more lately I’m drawn to simplicity and minimalism. I like super modern furniture and architecture so I think keeping decor to a minimum is important.

Ooh, I love it! Reminds me of elementary school projects…but way prettier, clearly.
Also, your house is just completely gorgeous. I’ve really been enjoying seeing photos of the space and what you’re doing with it. Beautiful.

Elise, your note on making decisions reminded me of something my Father-in-law shared with me recently. It’s a snippet from a New Yorker article that reads, “Is this a HARD choice for you? [Yes?] In that case, it doesn’t matter. If it’s a hard decision, then there’s always lots to be said on both sides, so either choice is likely to be good in its way. Hard choices are always unimportant.”
I find this to be so true and such profound perspective. Some of my recent purchases (and decisions not to purchase!) have quickly become favorites because I’ve kept this in mind.
Sending virtual hugs your way (always)!!

    I love it!
And I love the way you have reinvented your home over the last few years. Boyfriend and I are on the same path of slowly redecorating with non-IKEA stuff. Your house is such an inspiration, and I wanted to thank you for that!

I love the mobile. So cool and funky! I get like that too with projects and also with purchases. I like to do create stuff right away if I love it!

Very neat. I would pick an interesting or meaningful constellation and mimic it for this project.
Love your blog. It’s such a nice read. Thank you.

I think it would be more funny than anything else if that fell! A split second of feeling tangled, then realizing it is only a pound and breakable! Like when you fall in the waves and then remember you can stand up. It does look really cool. Keeps the room light. I am wondering if I can do that same thing, only make constellations (glow paint involved?) for the kids’ room. Thanks for the inspiration!
