It's week five and I love this project.

Heads up : I got a comment asking why I am blurring out ultrasound photos and I wanted to address it here in case other people are curious. I made the executive decision long ago that I would not share photos of pregnancy tests or ultrasounds with the Internet. This is no big deal until it comes to sharing my Project Life pages where I want to include these details. In order to still share my pages without compromising my decision, I am blurring when appropriate.

For the record, I know there will be a lot of blurring in this album for the next few months as I share thoughts about pregnancy, Paul being deployed and details about our new house that are so important for me to document, but not important to share with the world. Thank you for respecting the privacy boundaries (however random) that I decide to set for our family.

Week of : January 28 – February 3.

Plwk5left

What happened this week? We found out the baby is looking good after a Level II ultrasound. We spent a good chunk of time at the beach celebrating Paul's last week at home before deployment. We opened Escrow on a house.

Anything special in the spread? A crazy amount of journaling. All of it in handwriting. Much of it rambling. I wrote on the white space on photos and on journaling cards.

Plwk5detail3

Techniques this week : Because the U/S came with a ton of photos that I don't really have a place for except this album, I made a small insert to hold a column of three on each side out of an 8.5×11 page protector. I stuck the photos in (three on the front and three on the back) and used the zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine to make the pocket narrower. I have no special way of sewing on page protectors, I just use the same tension that I use when sewing on paper or fabric, go slow and hold it steady. I added a little "hi" flair badge on top because the little one was waving at the camera on her 3D image.

Plwk5detail2

Overall thoughts : I love this project. Last year was different, in that our day to day life was fairly normal. I loved the project then, without a doubt. But this year, with so much change and things happening it's awesome to have a place to document all my thoughts and photos. For sure in the next few months things will settle back to "normal" and that will be great too.

Ratio of iPhone photos to "real camera" photos : 9 to 1.

Ratio of photos taken by Elise to photos taken by Paul : 8 to 2.

Supplies used : Seafoam core kit, Paislee Press calendar card, Freckled Fawn arrow wood chip, American Crafts letter stickers (gold), Basic Gray for Studio Calico letter stickers, Ormolu flair badge (love), Marcy Penner flair badge (hi), Studio Calico hexagon sticker.

Tools used : Design A pocket pages, Fiskars corner rounder, Zig Millenium pen, Amy Tangerine gray Slickwriter (coming soon), Rotatrim paper trimmer, Office Depot date stamp, staz-on ink. All photos were printed at home on my HP Photosmart 2575 printer on Office Depot semi-gloss photo paper.

Project Life is a memory-keeping system created by Becky Higgins. I use photos, text and stuff to document our life weekly. You can see all the posts from 2012 here and 2013 here. Do you have a question about how I am tackling this project? Check here.

I love seeing your project life posts on Sunday morning! It gives me inspiration to start mine up for the week. Love the use of the flair badges on the pictures! I didn’t even notice that the ultrasound picture was blurry before.
I loved the new white on black valentine art that you posted on instagram! Thanks for all of the inspiration!!

love coming here every week to see your layouts! always such great inspiration!! as for what you share…you should never have to explain yourself. i am always shocked when people think bloggers either share too much or too little. this is your space and even though yes it is a”for profit” blog what you share is up to you. especially when it comes to your kids & the Internet. i would even think nothing of it if you never shared pictures of your daughter. the older my child gets the less i share. you have to think about them & what will be out there in the future. anyways…thanks for giving us a glimpse into your life!

I compeletely agree with Mindy’s comments. The flip side of the blurring for me anyway is that it shows you treat this project as a wholly real and true thing. You share everything in YOUR project life album and if you have to blur that’s fine by me. I love that it is ‘true’. If that makes any sense!
Also just love every week and seafoam you did a great job on that design.

I agree completely with MIndy and Mel. You may already know this, but just in case: I was told that the ultrasound photos will (basically) turn black over time because of what they use to print it or something? So we scanned in our ultrasound photos so that we would have a digital copy that we could print on photo paper at any time if we wanted. 🙂

Do you upload your photos into Iphoto and keep them organized there? Do you find any editing programs best? I am looking for the best program/organization method now that I am taking so many pictures for PL!

I completely understand your decision to keep the ultrasound photos private. Interestingly enough, my husband is the one who is insistent that we never post our (hypothetical) fetus’s ultrasound photo on Facebook. You have to make the best choices for you and your family. (In related news, we are not planning to try for kids for a couple of years, but OMG! Those polka dot pants make me want to have a baby tomorrow.)
Thanks, as always, for the Project Life inspiration. I’m attempting it this year, so it’s nice to have your guidance.

    Hi Elise,
I am loving your current spreads and updates. It is always exciting to see what is going on in your world. I just had a warning to share when I saw your ultrasound photos.
My soldier co-worker is pregnant and when she gets her ultrasounds done at a military hospital, her SSN is on the picture. I cannot tell if yours has that on it but I just thought I’d post a warning anyway.
Does your husband only work in Navy hospitals or in a combined forces one downrange? I’m only asking because 3 of our friends are deployed right now. I was recently told that if you get injured in combat and go to one of those hospitals, you have a high percentage rate of survival and full recovery regardless of how severe your injuries are. I just wanted to say thank you to your husband because working in the medical field is not an easy task. He helps to ensure that our military personnel make it back home to their families.
Thank you to you too. It seems that P’s dwell time was short or that it went by really fast. I truly admire your strength and determination to continue living fully while he is deployed. You also inspired me to learn to knit. It is way quicker than crocheting!

Oh, why do people even ask why somebody don’t want to share their whole lives on the internet?
I am so glad that you share so much inspiration with everyone of us and please just share what you want to and don’t explain yourself, I don’t think there’s a need for that.
A question not only to elise but to all who do pl:
where do you place your monthly dividers. I am so confused. If I place them between two spreads that’s kind of stupid and if I place my january in front of my title page that seems wrong too.
    Help 🙂

Thanks so much for sharing. I am using Seafoam and loving it.
Please thank your husband for his service to our country. I am military spouse as well and my husband is an Army nurse. He has been deployed several times since 1984 so I have an understanding of what you are going through. I closed on a house and gave birth to one of my kids during his deployments. After almost 30 years we have survived and my kids have thrived.

I’m curious to know if you plan to do a baby album with Project Life? or will you do the baby’s album within your yearly album?
We’re expecting a baby in July and this is my 2nd year with PL~ just curious what your plans were:)

Yes, they will! The paper that u/s photos are printed on is heat-sensitive, so exposure to heat is how the image is printed on it, and thereby why they turn black over time. 🙂

I do not use the monthly dividers to actually designate months. I just use them to highlight fun things that happen (well that is what I did last year, have not yet used any for this year). I cover up the tab and add whatever I want on top. If I was doing monthly, I would just stick them in the middle of the week, so January would go after the title page in the middle of week one. 🙂

I think it’s awesome that you keep some stuff to yourself… You already share so much for us all, so it’s good to keep some private things private! It’s a great reminder to all of us other bloggers that we don’t need to share every little personal detail on the internet, and it’s better to make the decision now than regret it later once it’s already shared!

Complete respect for blurring. I truly admire those that share Project Life as it is such a personal project. I’m hoping to share my December Daily on the blog but am wondering about my pages where the entire left hand side needs to be blurred! (Kindy photos, etc.)

Every time I see one of your spreads I want to do PL. I am just so worried I’d never keep up! I know there are the mini albums, but I’ve been known to start a project like this and not finish it. Maybe after I do a week in the life I’ll reconsider.
Your pages are so beautiful. Everyone has different levels of sharing what is comfortable to them. I don’t share the magazine I work at, I’m sure people could find me, but it’s a personal preference. I like how you used the word “random,” 🙂

I love your project life so much, I really do! I keep wanting to do one, but I never feel like I have anything worth keeping in this manner since most weeks/days would be my job, exercise, food, repeat, lol. It’s just me and my husband, no kids and not really any family around. Do you have any tips or advice for those of us who love the idea of this project but just don’t feel like we have enough “material” to do this regularly?

I am really glad that you explained why you were blurring some of your photos. I really want to post scrapbook pages and project life pages on my blog, but most have my daughter. I am not really wanting to have her picture all over the internet (if I can help it). I had contemplated on blurring, but was worried that I would have a lot of blurry photos and then people wouldn’t be as interested in looking at my layouts. You have made me realize that it really doesn’t matter what others think, but what I feel is important. Thanks!

You might be surprised at how many things you can document. Life seems very much the same day in and day out, but there are a lot of nuances if you think about it (what you are eating, cooking, who you have seen in a week, different appointment, what is going on in the world that impacts/affects you, etc). Plus, you don’t have to do a weekly 2-page spread. You can do a 1-page weekly or even a 2-page monthly spread. Just some suggestions…hope that helps.
