Knit4

I've had this blanket on my mind for years. Ever since I saw the Super Easy Baby Blanket from the Purl Bee, I knew I'd be making my own for our little one. And once I knew she was a she it was fun to pick colors.

Knit2

I ended up making mine bigger than the Purl Bee pattern. I struggled a bit to find the right size, but I knew that more than a swaddling blanket, I wanted something that I could lay on the ground and then stick her on top of when she can play but not move around too much. I also knew wanted something that will eventually be big enough for snuggling under and can be used for fort building. 🙂

Knit5

In the end, mine turned out to be about 39×54 inches. I got to this size through a bit of trial and error (the finished blanket was the result of my third cast on).

Here

I used Plymouth Yarn Encore worsted weight. I had purchased seven skeins, but ended up using just six. My yarn called for size 8 needles so that is what I went with. In order to be able to cast on 100 stitches (what I found to be the right size) I used circular needles (they hold a lot more stiches) but of course, did not knit in the round.

Knit3

I knit the whole thing with the knit stitch (or garter stitch) and just keep going until I had about nine inches of each color. Once I knew the size was going to be right, this blanket was so easy. Knitting is by far my favorite television watching activity. The blanket is soft and cushion-y and I can't wait to see it with the baby girl on top.

Knit

Between this one and the gray and white striped, she's pretty set in the knit blanket department, but next up, I'll be making her a quilt. (Or two.)

Oh I love this blanket (and the first one too!). Knitting is also my favorite activity in front the TV in the evenings (especially in winter time). Right now, I’m knitting a pair of mitts for me, then I will knit a scarf for my daughter with the rest of yarn I’ve got from the mitts and I just ordered some more yarn and needles to knit a pullover (oh my! I’m not sure I will be able to handle the pullover… anyway…). Love seeing your creations here! Have a nice day.

Amazing! So I have an idea. I would LOVE to see a video of you knitting. You have to be the quickest knitter ever. I have to be doing it wrong. Any tips/techniques on how you’re able to finish these projects so quickly would be great!

You should teach me to knit when you move to San Diego! I desperately need a productive, mindless tv watching activity for the nights when my husband is deployed. This would be perfect!

Oh, I LOVE that! We’ve had several generous people knitting and quilting for our impending bundle (I do neither) and they’re great, but I adore the stripes. I wonder if I could talk my sister-in-law into it. 😉

fyi, I’m a mom of 2 little boys (5 y/o and almost 2 y/o) and let me assure you that you can have more than 2 blankets and it won’t be too much. if you feel like knitting some more. it’s amazing how quickly blankets get dirty and need a wash or get damaged or lost.
I’m just learning to quilt so I’m looking forward to see what you create for your little one.
as always, thanks for the inspiration.

My comment isn’t so much about the blanket (which is so great btw!) but about your entire blog. It has been a SLOOOOW day at work. So slow that I just went through your entire blog. OK, I didn’t read every word of it, but I have 2 questions for you: Are you prepared to win the lottery yet? And are you going to climb that palm tree? I wouldn’t recommend the second one until that little one is here though 🙂 So after spending the afternoon with you, lol, I have come to these conclusions: I want to make a mini album, just because. I want to go to Starbucks. I want to take a picture of my shoes. Thank you for entertaining me all afternoon!

I agree, Elise. As a mom of 4, I can tell you there are never too many blankets. But she’ll probably pick a favorite one. All of mine have a favorite that they need to sleep with. Even my 7 year old still has to have his “silky” every night 🙂

This turned out so awesome! I love the colours you’ve chosen for it. And thank you for the inspiration to try circle needles… I’ve started a blanket with them and they’re really interesting to work with. I’m stalled with it waiting for my wool order to come in though.

Congrats on all the Baby girl news & I’m Love all the baby crafting, my mum used to make quilts for babies and she always said you had to make a deliberate mistake so it wasn’t too perfect, as the fairies might get jealous & steel the baby! This is probable a silly english thing but her quilts used to sell quite well because of it! So if you do make a mistake there is the story to go behind it! take care seeya hugya G

By 100 sizes, do you mean 100 stitches across the bottom? I have a nephew that probably doesn’t need a new blanket but this looks easy enough I’d like to give it a shot anyway!

What a beautiful blanket, Elise! I so appreciate your specifying the yarn weight, number of stitches casted on, etc., because I thought the Purl Bee blanket seemed a little small too, and I would love to make one of these for my little boy! He’s almost 9 months old and it seems like I’m in need of a blanket everywhere- a spare in each car, one in the diaper bag, one with his carseat or stroller, one on the floor in multiple rooms where we play or practice crawling, and so on. I think larger sizes are more versatile too, especially as they get bigger! So, thanks again for posting. And even though we don’t know each other, I’m thinking of your family as you and Paul prepare to be apart again.

This is such a fabulous blanket. I might have to try to make one (it will be my 2nd knitting project). My grandma has recently been knitting lots of blankets for my little girl (13 months) and for charity (there have been lots of big bush fires and floods in Australia in the last month, so lots of needy families) so I am going to send a link to her too for some inspiration!
Also, I really felt for you the other day when you needed extra tests etc. my little girl came 10 weeks early and it is amazing how such little people can cause such huge amounts of stress! It’s good to see you are staying relaxed though. They say relaxed parents = chilled babies….

    Hi Elise,
I was wondering how you were going with this blanket and Ellerie. I am planning on making one for a friend and I was hoping you could tell me if it is a practical gift (I don’t have any kiddos so I am a bit unsure.)
    Thanks in advance,
