Yoga2

Before I wrapped up mile a day, I started thinking about what could be next. I still think running is rad and plan on incorporating (slow!) runs into my routine for the next few months, but I really wanted to try yoga for a different strengthening exercise.

Yoga6

I have been on a yoga kick before. My second semester junior year I was obsessed and took classes at my college gym and then was going to classes daily during the summer. It was great for my body but much better for my mind. I had struggled with some body image issues a few months prior and yoga was a big part of why I was able to turn that around for good. I loved the workouts. I loved the quiet. I loved the stretch. I loved seeing progress over the weeks and months of making it part of my routine.

But since then (and that was almost seven years ago!) I have fallen off the wagon. Yoga got very boring. I wasn't connecting to it like before. Classes, once I was out of college, were very expensive. I didn't have time. Yada, yada, yada, my list of excuses could go on and on.

Yoga1

So when I decided to recommit this month, instead of thinking about why yoga had or hadn't worked for me in the past, I thought about what had worked for me with running a mile a day and applied that to this new workout. Mile a day worked because :

  • it was free. I stepped outside and ran.
  • I could do it anytime of day (again, I just walked outside and started running).
  • it didn't take a long time. 10-20 minutes and I was done with the commitment.
  • it was physical and I got out of my chair and away from my desk.
  • I was holding myself accountable through daily photos that I posted to instagram.

The reasons why I enjoyed the running adventure so much is really wrapped up in the above five reasons. It made sense to me that I should try and get the same few things out of my yoga routine.

Yoga3

I am doing yoga completely at home. Completely from memory. No DVDs. No youtube videos. No podcasts. There is nothing wrong with any of these methods and I love that folks have so many choices! But, for me, right now, this is working really well. I bought a book called Yoga for Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond to read through and see safe and modified poses for each trimester. For the most part though, I am just using what I remember from those classes in college and doing what feels good for me.

Because of the book, this venture isn't totally free. I also bought a new mat in early January because my old one was dirty and ragged and I wanted something fresh and, don't laugh, but I downloaded an Eyna album to put some sound to my routine too (and totally love it).

Yoga5

I am really working to find a balance between keeping the routines short (so I don't get bored or let my mind wander) and still getting a decent practice. I have slowly worked up the time from that 10 minute session on January 1st to about 25-28 minutes today. (I did this by adding in more poses and holding each pose a bit longer). I'd love to get them a bit longer, ideally 35 minutes or so.

Yogaspace

I have my mat, book and a few candles set up in a corner of our bedroom (finally! after 13 months of living here that odd extra space is being used!) and having a dedicated space is making a difference, I can tell. Having extra space will not always be an option, so I am very grateful for it at the moment.

Yoga4

And, as you've seen throughout this post, I am taking photos and posting them to instagram with the hashtag #dailyyoga. I will be the first to admit this is wierd. Yoga is internal. It's about going within, not sharing photos or comparing with others. However, this part has been inspiring and fun for me. I really like experimenting with self-portraits. I love the creative challenge of finding a new angle or pose to photograph. All of the pictures are taken with my iPhone, usually using the TimerCam app. I've enjoyed this part of the exercise so far and I have plans to expand this photo project through different ventures (crafting! baking! mothering! working! gardening!) each month of this year.

Yoga7

So that's my update. It's going well. I really love it. Keeping the workouts short and sweet is making a world of difference. Eventually, I'd love to work in a weekly pre-natal yoga class into the routine (something out of the house with a teacher and other students) but until I find the right one, this is going great.

Very cool. At the end of 2012 I was doing daily Sun Salutations every day, and loved it. It was all done at home in a tiny corner of our living room, from memory.
Not sure about where you live and where you’re moving, but I’d definitely do some searching on studios to see if they offer a free first class, if you’re interested. In our area about 1/3 of the studios do that, and while I haven’t been yet, and I know it’ll happen by summer. You could also look for free or pay-as-you-wish community classes. My partner and I found one in our town that we love, and it’s free for all.

Loving the photos. I agree with you. There is something about doing a thing daily. I’ve been on and off with yoga for years, and am planning a daily practice in Feb. Am thinking the fun of a daily SP might be a good way to stay motivated. Thanks for the idea.

Sounds (and looks) like a good adventure 🙂 I remember continuing with home-based Pilates excercises during my pregnancy and it was a great way to set off my day. That said, I completely dropped off the bandwagon after birth and have yet to jump on again – what a great reminder to make it work!

amazing! i love the rush of empowerment you get from designing and following your own sequence, that’s just for you, that you know is exactly what your body wants (and needs) to be doing… on top of all the other benefits of doing yoga 🙂 i teach prenatal classes and i’ll tell you that one of the most wonderful things about them is the sense of community that comes along with the practice. before each class, the mamas who come regularly chat about how they are feeling, what is going on with their pregnancy, and compare stories. it is always a very uplifting and inclusive feel, and definitely one of my favourite parts about teaching the prenatal classes. looking forward to hearing more about how you feel the yoga is affecting your pregnancy 🙂

I’m aiming to do yoga every single day this year, and just 16 days in, it’s changing my life. I visit a studio faithfully, and my teacher says that the best yoga is the kind that feels right in your body and that classes are nice, but that a strong home practice is amazing.
I’m loving your photos and thanks to your mentioning it on Instagram the other day, I’m using the TimerCam app, too. Like you, I’m finding taking creative photos to be a really fun challenge.

I was just thinking to myself yesterday that I need to start doing yoga. I’m a disabled vet, so I can’t run or do any sort of impact but I know my muscles need a workout and yoga seems perfect for that. I think this post has finally given me all the motivation I need to just go do it. 🙂 Thanks!

I’ve been working on making yoga a daily habit this year (with WiiFit because home on my time works best for me too!). I’m looking into upgrading my mat (which currently is a really old thin foam one not specifically for yoga) because it doesn’t feel great on a hardwood floor. Are you happy with your new mat so far?

Very cool! Good for you to find ways to be inspired to exercise body, mind and spirit. I have also done yoga for years and did modified poses when I was pregnant. I believe that it helped me with the delivery of both of my boys . I was more centred, calm and could focus easily on breathing exercises. Thanks for always sharing the inspiring things that work for you!

I started doing yoga regularly about 12 years ago and did daily yoga during my second pregnancy. I used to get cramps in my legs at night and evening streching was a great way to prevent that. These days I only do a couple of excersis and about 10 – 15 meditation.
I am thinking about trying your “mile a day”!

I worked out 6 days a week with my pregnancy and started doing some light yoga in my 2nd trimester when I started getting bad leg cramps at night and aching from being able to only sleep on one side. It so helped the rest of my pregnancy and for recovery.

I have been loving your photos of yoga and the different angles. Years ago I used to soak in the bath once a week, light a few candles and put on Enya….it is so memorizing and moody……now a mother with a 9 year old and a nearly 7 year old I must admit I can’t remember when I last soaked in a bath as it’s the quick shower for me but if you have a bath and want to do some down time for 15 mins to soak your body put Enya on because it’s wonderful for just thinking…that’s what I did in the bath, just think about life’s stuff. Great pics. Love your motivation and your photos are definately motivating other people which is a really nice bonus.

I have loved prenatal yoga. It’s 1/2 yoga and 1/2 support group :). The classes I’ve gone to start with everyone going around and introducing themselves and saying how far along in their pregnancy they are and any issues that are bothering them. The first class I realized that I had never been around that many pregnant women before :)…there were about 20 in the class.
Some of my favorite poses from the classes have been cat/cow (omg…my fave especially as you start getting bigger), goddess pose (http://www.yogatreesf.com/pose-of-the-month-goddess-pose/), and a lot of child’s pose, ragdoll is awesome too…I realize as I’m typing this that most of these have been to help alleviate low back pain (which I’ve had a decent amount of).
You are an inspiration…keep it up 🙂

I’ve been reading your blog for several months now, always in anticipation of your next “creation”. I taught yoga for some 20 years and loved my prenatal classes because of the positive expectations held by every woman. Your post today, reminded me of something I once wrote and want to keep in mind. If you’d care to read it: http://uechi.typepad.com/konayogacom/2008/03/an-infinite-exp.html Be well, Elise.

It’s funny you mention yoga. I’ve been seriously considering trying it. Right now, my muscles are losing their flexibility and some of their strength, so I thought yoga would be great.
But, it is expensive, and my schedule isn’t the best for making time, both travel and actual time for a class.
Have you or your readers ever tried any of the online yoga learning outlets? I’m wondering if any of them stand out as better than the rest.

Hi. This comment isn’t related to your yoga post, but I just wanted to finally stop lurking and say how much I’ve been enjoying your blog lately. I randomly discovered Project Life back in August through Pinterest and decided to try it out. I am absolutely, completely hooked. I love it. That’s how I found your blog, through BeckyHiggins.com. Anyway, I’ve enjoyed reading about your life and your projects and everything else, and I wanted to let you know that I decided to purchase the Seafoam Project Life kit and… I literally just opened it five minutes ago and had to hop on here to tell you how much I absolutely adore it. I liked what I had before, but this… This I am in love with. It’s perfect. Exactly what I want. There’s more journaling space on the cards and it just… makes sense to me. I feel like I will get more use out of this one than my last one.. I can’t wait to get started using it! Anyway. Just wanted to say hi. Congrats on the little one! Have a good day! 🙂

Thanks for sharing this post. I’ve been hanging out for it since you mentioned it the other day, as yoga is something I need to work into my routine too. I did a an antenatal yoga class when I was pregnant with my first child. I LOVED it. I’m at a stage now where doing yoga at home would work and my kids (1.5 & 4.5 year old) would so love joining in.

I’ve really loved online yoga courses with Marianne Elliott
    http://marianne-elliott.com/courses/yoga-courses
There is the upfront cost of the course, but you learn how to establish your own home practice and you get to keep the video and audio files beyond the 30 days, so I think the cost is a great value. And Marianne is an awesome teacher.

for me, part of what was so great about the mile a day challenge was how it had a specific end date that lead to a fresh start on the right foot. Do you have an end date in mind for daily yoga?

A few weeks back, I read that when you really challenge yourself, you should smile – sends good “vibes” to your brain. And the first thing I thought of was your marathon post about smiling because of your dad. 🙂 Anyway, after every run or work-out I take a pic of me smiling. LOVING IT!

congrats on the pregnancy and getting back to yoga!
if you are ever interested in doing something more guided – i highly recommend sara holliday’s yoga dvds for pregnancy – she has one for specific to each trimester. i appreciate that while “easier” than a usual yoga flow class, they are still a bit challenging. i used this set when pregnant with my son 3 years ago, and i’m using it now during my second pregnancy. oh – and you’ll be able to find her dvds on amazon for $5.99 each. definitely cost effective!

I really need to start doing something active. I spend, as you probably do, way too many hours each day at a desk. Walking/running isn’t an option – it’s too cold, even in Vegas! I have a yoga dvd, but that didn’t work very well for me. I like the idea of a free-form approach. There’s tons of stuff on Pinterest. Maybe I’ll print some of those out and make my own way in the yoga world.

Your dedication and ability to do yoga on your own (as opposed to taking a class) is so inspiring! I’m taking my second yoga class at my college and I don’t know how you do it! I really enjoyed this post. I love hearing about other’s journeys with yoga. I did yoga before I found out that I was pregnant (11 weeks today!), but only as a home-based, relaxing practice. I’ve never done a class, though I would like to. I’ve been skeptical about doing it since I’ve been pregnant, and have a DVD now, but I don’t have a t.v. or an optical drive on my computer, SO. It was a gift, haha. I looked at this book on amazon and found it for two dollars, so I ordered it and am greatly looking forward to trying it out. It helped me a lot because I’m always so iffy about yoga books, I always like to hear of someone who enjoys them beforehand.
