I have been getting a few emails about the difference between setting goals and accomplishing the normal day-to-day activities. What do I consider what? How do I stay motivated to do the mundane or routine stuff over and over again? How do I tackle large goals?

I thought it would be a fun topic to blog about, especially at the beginning of the year.

First, it helps to break it all down. At the simplest point, I think you can separate everything you do into one of three layers.

Layers

Layer one is the necessities. You breathe. You eat. You sleep. Those are the basics and items that must occur for you to live. Most likely, if you're reading this blog, these are things you do every day without thinking too much about them (unless, of course, they are interrupted by an outside factor and then they are the only thing you think about).

Layer two includes the actions you preform over and over again to sustain a "normal" life. I am totally generalizing here but this would include everything from putting gas in the car to showering to taking out the trash to going to work. I would consider these the "chores" or "routines" that happen over and over again. Many of these things are habits or rituals that you do once a day or when they are needed without thinking about them.

Everything in layers one and two has to be accomplished by me or someone in my household. They are not exciting, but they are for the most part, necessary.

Bonus

Layer three is where I see the bonus stuff. It's the more creative, more life-enriching (as opposed to life-sustaining) stuff that I make choices to add to layers one and two. For the most part, "goal-setting" and the majority of goals I set fall into the layer three category. I love layer three. It's the exercising, creative experimenting, house decorating, challenging work ventures, saving money, planting a garden "stuff". All of these are things that I choose to do on top of the "normal" stuff because I have found they make my life better. I don't have to do layer the three items and that's what makes them fun goals to work toward.

With that said, I can explain a bit more how I tackle both layers two and three.

Layer two :

About two-thirds the stuff on "layer two" is just habit that over time has ingrained into my routine. The other third gets added to my daily to-do list because I appreciate the reminder. Like some days I'll actually write "LAUNDRY" on my list and make a point to get through five or six loads as I go about my day. I write "mail rent" or "make pizza dough" or "pull chicken from freezer" on my to-do list in case it slips my mind. Personally, I am able to focus better on the "fun stuff" as well as fully commit to a productive work day (remember, I work from home) when I know layer two has been taken care of and the house is relatively clean. I am able to accomplish more goals and explore layer three when layer two isn't nagging at the back of my mind.

Avoiding Facebook almost entirely, not caving to "in-active" TV watching time and severely cutting down the number of blogs I read has given me more time to accomplish daily tasks. Having a place for everything in our house has helped me stay organized and not feel like I am drowning in "stuff". Having one day a week for tackling laundry (obviously I'll need more than that when we add a little one and cloth diapers into the mix) or grocery shopping has helped me feel like I am not spinning my wheels and getting no where. Turning on music and setting a timer in the kitchen (by literally punching 10 minutes into the microwave) then twirling around like the tasmanian devil and washing dishes, unloading the dishwasher and wiping down counters has really helped me feel like I am moving quickly through my least favorite chore.

Layertwo

Layer two, for me, is about finding the right time in my day and little tricks that help me move through mundane tasks. Finding the right balance is totally a personal preference, but something that I think is important to experiment with and allow to develop so I don't dread the "normal" and just embrace it so I can move on with my day.

Layer three :

A lot of what I share here is layer three. The crafts. The projects. The running. The bread baking. The gardening. The books I read. Even all these thoughts about goal setting. Layer three tends to make for more interesting blog content, that is for sure. Often these things are inspiring and flashy and look great in a photo grid, but really, layer three projects get broken down into manageable bites in the form of to-do list items just like layer two.

When I was running mile a day, I went through my calendar and wrote "mileaday" on each page and then diligently crossed it off. When I am working on something more long-term and intense, like decorating our bedroom, I break the project down into steps (paint walls, move dresser, sew pillow, buy plants, reorganize drawers, hang art, etc) so instead of looking at one giant and overwhelming task, I am looking at 10-15 small and manageable ones.

Wishes

The lesson, of course, is that at the end of the day, layer three is really just made up of to-do list items (that can be relatively fun). If you don't break big goals up into actionable items they serve as nothing more than wishes and will not be accomplished. It all comes down to scheduling and then following through. I have spent a lot of time the past few years getting a handle on layer two so I can actively devote time to more "enriching" projects. I know I'll have to work hard to re-gain the handle I have when we add a new family member. I am nervous but incredibly excited for the challenge and the joy the baby (and then child!) will add to our lives.

Goal-setting can be SO overwhelming. Long to-do lists can make me want to give up and mindlessly scroll through Pinterest. But ultimately that's boring and ineffective. So I schedule. And plan. And write. And edit. And simplify. And remember how good it feels to accomplish something and cross stuff off. And I practice, practice, practice.

    thank you for these really helpful reminders. i love posts like this as i am slowly making my way to balance with two littles and it is easy to feel overwhelmed and excited this time of year with an empty day planner and a new fresh year of ideas. i’ve been reading for over a year now but rarely comment (if ever i can’t remember) and wanted to stop and say hi! oh and congrats on you baby!

    Lovely post at just the right time of year, Elise. My favourite ways to do ‘layer 2’ tasks are to combine them with something nicer or reward them with ‘layer 3’ tasks. For example, last night I got the ironing done but I did it in front of the tv, so felt quite virtuous about watching self-indulgent programmes. Today I’m clearing up the house after my three boys and weekend guests destroyed it(!), but I’m giving myself a cup of fruit tea, a bit of time checking blogs (so here I am) or some menu planning (a chore I strangely love) as a reward per room done.
    Also, I have to say that after having 3 children my memory has wandered off somewhere, so I write everything down on a list both for the pious joy of crossing it off and because if it’s not written down, it doesn’t happen!

    great blog post! I like how your broke it all down. I also set the timer to get tasks done! My husband thinks that is so funny. Regarding kids… well you will figure it out! But my experience (mama to 3) is that I have a plan or goals for my day. And sometimes it goes smoothly. But sometimes my kiddos have their own agenda and I get way off of where I wanted to be. These are times I have to practice patience and flexibility. I have noticed that the older my kids gets the easier it gets. Babies are so wonderful – but they will turn your days upside down. And sometimes the biggest goal during the first few months of a new baby is just to take a shower and eat something! But so worth it 🙂

    How would you do all this if you were still working full time and commuting over an hour? Bc that is my situation. I can write “LAUNDRY” all I want but when I get home, I only have energy to collapse and maybe make something to eat.

    When I was working full time out of the house and commuting two hours, I did all six loads of laundry on Friday and Saturday (my days off). I did 60% of my layer 3 activities in the evenings after I got home and spent my saturdays with paul. It was SO hard. But I really worked on it because I wanted to shift my focus from 40 plus 10 commuting hours to full time out of the house. The only way (for me) to do that was to become super efficient at working both. 🙂

    these are really great tips! they only difference for me is that exercise is a level 2 task for me. if i had my choice between spin class & a craft project i’d probably always choose the craft project. i feel better about doing my personal/level 3 stuff once i’ve gotten a good sweat in.

    THat tip to set the timer in the kitchen and listen to music is fabulous. I will definitely be doing that either during nap time or lunch to so that I can get to doing fun stuff for myself while the kiddos nap. This post twas super helpful. I’m really working toward being more efficient in everything, especially with 2 little ones, one of them brand new. The transition has been difficult.

    You will do great after the baby comes because you already have the skills and routines in place that matter. Of course there will be some changes and adapting taking place, but as a mom (of a toddler) who works outside the home your advice about layer two really rings true. I have made EVERYTHING, down to the last boring task, into a routine. And I embrace it. It’s just a fact that on Saturday chores will get done, and then on Sunday I can rest/play. My routines and scheduling are the ONLY reason I get any “layer three” stuff done!

    Great post! I recently started working from home (for myself) and it’s been interesting to find a new balance between work that might make me money and house work (which has to get done by me, because my husband is definitely not going to do it!). So far this year I’ve been very diligent about planning out my days, even writing down things like “vitamin” because I’ve never gotten in the habit of taking one regularly. It’s satisfying to cross-out and keeps me on top of even the mundane things.
    And I’m glad to hear you’ll be cloth diapering your babe. We are hoping to start a family soon and that’s my preference as well. I hope you’ll share your tips & tricks as you figure it all out!

    I always love your posts on goals and productivity. Getting stuff done is something I struggle with (I’m ok at starting but not great at finishing) and I really admire how successful you are in this area. Thanks for sharing your tips. I’m sure this varies and it may be hard to answer because of that, but how many layer three tasks do you typically have on your list each day? Do you get stressed if there are too many things per day or do you enjoy having lots of things to cross off?

    Love this blog post! I’ve never thought about it before but I do think of tasks in layers. For example, after having breakfast I will be desperate to do something creative with my little boy but I can’t stand doing anything in a messy kitchen(even though we will create new mess) and so I will do lots of ‘layer 2’ tasks before getting on with the more exciting ‘layer 3’ activities.
    I have to say though, it’s much harder getting your own personnal ‘layer 3’ tasks done once you have children. This year I have set goals to put time aside for things I enjoy. To read every day (even if it is just for ten minutes) and to get on with my own projects during the little man’s nap instead of wasting the time on the internet.

    totally varies everyday. there are 19 tasks on my list for today and 2 of them I would consider layer three. 🙂 I do not get stressed by a long list. I get INCREDIBLY stressed when I do not have a list to keep me focused and I start to feel like things are slipping through the cracks.

    I just love your blog!! So happy I found you a little while back.
    I potter. I’m finding that is working for me. Pottering around getting little bits done here and there with no ‘rush’ pressure. It’s allowing me to stop when my kids ask for my help. It’s allowing me to do that without feeling like they are stopping me from getting my tasks done. It’s allowing me for time in my day to just sit and watch them as they play, and of course join in too.

    Great post! Like some other moms commented….be prepared to not have a lot of layer 3 once the baby comes along. So worth it…so so worth it….but it was hard a me hard adjustment to suddenly have little to no layer 3 (after having so many years of being able to indulge in layer 3)!! Just know that as time goes on…it will find its way back into your life and documenting your little one’s life will be how you will get more of layer 3 back into your days! Wishing you the best…

    This really makes sense.
    I know I’ve got layer one down – that’s easy.
    Layer two needs some tweaking, but sometimes I think we’re always tweaking layer 2 and layer three is fun. It’s where you can get distracted for hours and hours in your own little world and sometimes forget to do layer 2. (Especially if layer 2 is laundry).

    I just have them all stored in iPhoto. It is not fancy and it is not too organized. My saving grace is that I print a lot for our albums. My big hope, with the addition of the little one, is that I am able to get photo books printed often for me and the grandparents. That way we will have tangible records of our photos. 🙂

    I’m all about the timer on my iPhone for getting stuff done. To-do lists, even for goals, are my best friend. Everything I do, from reading to writing to email gets broken down into manageable chunks. I can do anything if it’s only 20 minutes, 30 minutes, whatever.

    This is really handy. I’ve never thought about breaking tasks into ‘layers’ – actually I like for my work and personal stuff to be integrated so I consider most tasks to be equal. Each day I nominate 3-4 top, most important tasks, then once those are done I just pick from the rest of my to-do list.
    Setting a timer and doing a task as fast as possible is so effective!
