This project took much too long. Mostly because I didn't have the right tools but was too stubborn to go buy them and make it happen. I have wanted to make clay tree ornaments for the past two months but was really inspired when I saw these on A Beautiful mess a few weeks ago.

Ornaments4

I shaped white clay (from Crayola) into round disks and then popped holes in the top. It was air-dry clay and took a few days to completely harden. Then I used various black pens to "practice" writing on them and see what worked. Nothing did. Instead of doing what I should have – buy a black paint pen – I covered them in a layer of mod podge which gave them a smooth glossy surface that actually looked better and took the Sharpie pen I was working with.

Oranments

I am pleased with the gloss but this was probably NOT the idea way to go about this project (buy a paint pen!). I knew from the beginning I wanted to use them to document all the places we have lived together as a couple. I wrote our addresses and the dates of our past apartments (and of course our current townhouse – blurred for privacy) and made up a bunch of extras that I will store with our tree decorations so I can add to the collection as we move.

Really, these are so simple, but meaningful to our family. It will it be pretty cool when we settle into our "forever home" (at least 12 years from now) and have a Christmas tree full of memories of homes past.

Ornaments6

And at least I know I'll always have a black Sharpie on hand to add more addresses. 🙂

This is project 17 of 27. I am
attempting to complete 27 craft projects using 27 different
materials before I turn 28 on 02.22.13.
You can follow my progress here on the blog or on pinterest. Birthday challenges are my favorite. You can see the 26 Projects I completed while 26 here and the 27 materials I have used so far here.

This is such a cool idea! Similarly, I have a scrapbook album that my husband and my story…not chronological order but just favorite pictures of us over time, all of our self portraits, favorite places, and life together. I planned years ago to do a 6×12 two page spread with a photo of the homes we have lived in together with the address on a label sticker overlapping the photo. It as been at least 3 years since I decided I was going to do this album…. It is still a work in progress. Now I have an additional 1 new address to add o the original 2!

Great idea. Now that my partner and I are in our third apartment together, I can see wanting to do something like this too.
How did you make the checklist image for 27 materials? And do you just switch out colors and the asterisk?

super cool idea especially using them for homes you’ve lived at. making them into the shape of a house ornament would be cool also. thanks for sharing. as retired military (20 years served) i would have only needed 11 ornaments…

Hi Elise, I love the idea of writing your previous addresses on your ornaments – a lovely bit of history with a whole lot of stories behind that will be treasured for decades, I’m sure!
I have just made ornaments like these with the children I teach (3 & 4year olds) with homemade dough that is amazing & I’m almost certain you could write on them once they’re baked.
The original recipe is here if you are interested: (it’s a wonderful blog that is full of amazing ideas for young children, written by an experienced Early Years teacher who is Mum of 3 young girls – endless inspiration for when you have your own babes!)

I loved these ornaments on ABM the other day…if I didnt have 1.5 million other projects to wrap up before Christmas I would totally be making these. Maybe next year?

These are so cool! I have been admiring all the lovely clay ornaments I’m seeing, but never knew what to put on them. This is such a great idea. Has my mind working for other things to capture on clay ornaments. I’m really loving the idea of making some of these for my son’s little Christmas tree in his room.

I love DIY ornaments! I haven’t made one myself yet but I’m going to. I want our christmas tree to tell a story. 10-20 yrs from now, it’d be cool to look at it & think back to when you made it & what was happening during that time. Gotta love making memories!

Instagram said today that it has the perpetual right to sell users’ photographs without payment or notification…
The new intellectual property policy, which takes effect on January 16, comes three months after Facebook completed its acquisition of the popular photo-sharing site. Unless Instagram users delete their accounts before the January deadline, they cannot opt out.

Great idea! I’d love to do this project as well – my husband have only lived two places together, but one of those places includes our first home that we bought!

Love this idea! I especially love the idea mentioned of shaping them as a house! I’ve been planning on making these with the address on one side and the key pressed into the other. Me and my partner are still in our first place, so we’re still able to do this

I don’;t think creating a tiny human with your uterus counts as a craft project. Maybe it does. but I don’t see DNA on the materials list, now do I? 🙂
